Book Exploring Technology and Social Space

Download or read book Exploring Technology and Social Space written by John Macgregor Wise and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1997-09-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the fundamental assumptions that we hold about the role of technology in our lives, Technology and Social Space describes the possibilities and limitations of human agency within the new wired world. In a patient and thoughtful style, author J. Macgregor Wise elaborates a critical, philosophical, and epistemological framework from which to better understand our relations to technology and social space. The book argues that most treatments of technology and society arise from a modernist episteme (or set of assumptions) that radically separates humans from technologies, focusing on questions of determination and identity. In an attempt to provide a clearer view of technology and social space, the book explores alternative perspectives centered on notions of agency. Working from within these alternative epistemes, the book turns its attention to the burgeoning technological assemblage of communication and information characterized by the Internet and cyberspace. Technology and Social Space draws on the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari and the actor-network sociology of Bruno Latour, and brings together diverse examples from cyborg films, television, museums, cyberspace, and debates over a New World Information and Communication Order. Ultimately, the book describes the possibilities and limitation of human agency within the new wired world. This groundbreaking volume will be of interest to professionals and academics in popular culture, media studies, mass communication, and sociology.

Book Talking with Students in Conflict

Download or read book Talking with Students in Conflict written by Nicholas James Long and published by Pro-Ed. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Talking with Students in Conflict: Life Space Crisis Intervention-Third Edition offers professionals and parents a brain-based, trauma-informed, relationship-building set of skills to turn problem situations into learning opportunities for young people who exhibit challenging behaviors in schools, communities, and in the home. This book offers a six-stage verbal framework to de-escalate youth crisis situations, foster self-awareness and insight in young people, improve their social-emotional skills, and bring about long-term behavioral change. The result is stronger adult-child connections, better emotional regulation, improved peer relationships, lower suspension rates, and fewer juvenile justice system referrals.LSCI skills are important because they enable any caring adult to step into a young person's life space-the heat of a stressful moment-and intervene effectively. The six-stage LSCI process helps adults de-escalate the emotional intensity of a crisis, gain an understanding of the conflict from the young person's point of view, offer new ways to think about the incident, and ultimately promote the youth's personal responsibility for behavior. This book is a must-have for educators, school administrators, counselors, psychologists, mental health workers, social workers, juvenile justice workers, paraprofessionals, and anyone working with children and adolescents who exhibit challenging behaviors. This revised edition features dozens of brand-new examples of the use of LSCI with children and adolescents from diverse backgrounds and in a variety of settings. The authors share suggestions for applying LSCI skills in real life and offer troubleshooting guidelines to make LSCI work in even the most challenging of circumstances. This edition features all new applications of LSCI skills, including as a tool with staff who inadvertently perpetuate conflicts with students, as a group intervention for building social-emotional skills, as a way to change passive aggressive behavior, and as a parenting strategy.

Book Issues Affecting the Future of the U S Space Science and Engineering Workforce

Download or read book Issues Affecting the Future of the U S Space Science and Engineering Workforce written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-07-20 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2006, the President announced a new civilian space policy focusing on exploration. As part of its preparations to implement that policy, NASA asked the NRC to explore long-range science and technology workforce needs to achieve the space exploration vision, identify obstacles to filling those needs, and put forward solutions to those obstacles. As part of the study, the NRC held a workshop to identify important factors affecting NASA's future workforce and its capacity to implement the exploration vision. This interim report presents a summary of the highlights of that workshop and an initial set of findings. The report provides a review of the workforce implications of NASA's plans, an assessment of science and technology workforce demographics, an analysis of factors affecting the aerospace workforce for both NASA and the relevant aerospace industry, and preliminary findings and recommendations. A final report is scheduled for completion in early 2007.

Book excerpt: Forty years on from the first moon landing, architecture in Space is entering a new era. Over the last decade, there has been a fundamental shift in the Space industry from short-term pioneering expeditions to long-term planning for colonisation, and new ventures such as Space tourism. Architects are now involved in designing the interiors of long-term habitable structures in Space, such as the International Space Station, researching advanced robotic fabrication technologies for building structures on the Moon and Mars, envisioning new 'space yachts' for the super-rich, and building new facilities, such as the Virgin Galactic 'Spaceport America' in New Mexico designed by Foster + Partners. Meanwhile the mystique of Space remains as alluring as ever, as high-profile designers and educators – such as Greg Lynn – are running designs studios drawing upon ever more inventive computational design techniques. This issue of AD features the most significant current projects underway and highlights key areas of research in Space, such as energy, materials, manufacture and robotics. It also looks at how this research and investment in new technologies might transfer to terrestrial design and construction. Space architects: Constance Adams, Marc Cohen, Ondrej Doule, Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger, Scott Howe, Brent Sherwood, Madhu Thangavelu, Andreas Vogler, Robert Zubrin. Architects: Bevk Perovic Arhitekti, Dekleva Gregoric Arhitekti, Foster + Partners, Neil Leach, Greg Lynn, OFIS architects, SADAR + VUGA.
