Book excerpt: Science fiction - one of the most popular literary, cinematic and televisual genres - has received increasing academic attention in recent years. For many theorists science fiction opens up a space in which the here-and-now can be made strange or remade; where virtual reality and cyborg are no longer gimmicks or predictions, but new spaces and subjects. Lost in space brings together an international collection of authors to explore the diverse geographies of spaceexploring imagination, nature, scale, geopolitics, modernity, time, identity, the body, power relations and the representation of space. The essays explore the writings of a broad selection of writers, including J.G.Ballard, Frank Herbert, Marge Piercy, Kim Stanley Robinson, Mary Shelley and Neal Stephenson, and films from Bladerunner to Dark City, The Fly, The Invisible Man and Metropolis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deploying Next Generation Multicast-Enabled Applications: Label Switched Multicast for MPLS VPNs, VPLS, and Wholesale Ethernet provides a comprehensive discussion of Multicast and MVPN standards—next-generation Multicast-based standards, Multicast Applications, and case studies with detailed configurations. Focusing on three vendors—Juniper, Cisco, and Alcatel-Lucent—the text features illustrations that contain configurations of JUNOS, TiMOS (Alcatel's OS), or Cisco IOS, and each configuration is explained in great detail. Multiple- rather than single-vendor configurations were selected for the sake of diversity as well as to highlight the direction in which the overall industry is going rather than that of a specific vendor. Beginning with a discussion of the building blocks or basics of IP Multicast, the book then details applications and emerging trends, including vendor adoptions, as well as the future of Multicast. The book is written for engineers, technical managers, and visionaries engaged in the development of next-generation IP Multicast infrastructures. - Offers contextualized case studies for illustrating deployment of the Next Generation Multicast technology - Provides the background necessary to understand current generation multi-play applications and their service requirements - Includes practical tips on various migration options available for moving to the Next Generation framework from the legacy
Download or read book Multimedia Multicast on the Internet written by Abderrahim Benslimane and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines multicast technology and will be a key text for undergraduate engineering students and master students in networks and telecoms. However, it will be equally useful for a wide range of professionals in this research field. Multicast routing was introduced with the advent of multiparty applications (for example, videoconferencing on the Internet) and collaborative work (for example, distributed simulations). It is related to the concept of group communication, a technique introduced to reduce communication costs. The various problems of multicast routing on the Internet are examined in detail. They include: group membership management, quality of service, reliability, safety, scalability and transport. Throughout the text, several protocols are introduced in order to analyze, compare and cover the various aspects of multicast routing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Toxic Spew is back, and in even more trouble than usual. WOOP WOOP WOOP! ALARM ALARM ALARM! It's chaos once more on the bridge of the Toxic Spew. But this time, the ship's problems are of a most human nature - they've run out of food! Mutiny, cannibalism and plain old theft are suggested as potential problem-solvers, but Captain Harvey politely requests that the crew buck their ideas up and think of something else. At which point the ISS is mentioned - no, not the International Space Station! - the Interstellar Service Station . . . But the ISS is spookily deserted when the team arrive, and it's not long before Harvey suspects there's something fishy going on... and he's not just talking about the Spew's malfunctioning rubbish chute. Can Harvey unite his crew one more time and solve the mystery of the abandoned space station? Will Scrummage really eat Yargal if they don't find some food? And will Harvey EVER get home? Join the gang for another rip-roaring, space-hopping and (frankly) stomach-turning adventure on the universe's worst intergalactic rubbish truck - and see if you can spot the special input from kids on The Story Adventure!

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence in Education written by V. Dimitrova and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication covers papers presented at AIED2009, part of an ongoing series of biennial international conferences for top quality research in intelligent systems and cognitive science for educational computing applications. The conference provides opportunities for the cross-fertilization of techniques from many fields that make up this interdisciplinary research area, including: artificial intelligence, computer science, cognitive and learning sciences, education, educational technology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, and the many domain-specific areas for which AIED systems have been designed and evaluated. AIED2009 focuses on the theme "Building learning systems that care: from knowledge representation to affective modelling". The key research question is how to tackle the complex issues related to building learning systems that care, ranging from representing knowledge and context to modelling social, cognitive, metacognitive, and affective dimensions. This requires multidisciplinary research that links theory and technology from artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and computer science with theory and practice from education and the social sciences.

Download or read book IP Multicast Protocol Configuration written by Sangam Racherla and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common transmission scheme used in networks today is unicast, which represents "one-to-one" transmission with one sender and one receiver. Sometimes there is a need for one host to send packets that are received by multiple hosts. The problem with implementing this kind of transmission using unicast is that the stream of packets must be replicated as many times as there are receivers. IP Multicast addresses the problem by intelligently sending only one stream of packets and then replicating the stream when it reaches the target domain that includes multiple receivers or reaches a necessary bifurcation point leading to different receiver domains. In this IBM® RedpapersTM publication, we introduce principles of IP Multicast and describe the IPv4 addressing used for multicast. We discuss the protocols that are used to implement multicast in an IP network and then provide the general IP Multicast configuration procedures and then presents IP Multicast configuration in a sample network using IBM System Networking Ethernet Switches. We conclude this paper with command references that include all commands and their parameters for configuration of multicast protocols and features. After understanding the basics of how to configure IP Multicast for the networking scenario described in this paper, IT network professionals will be able replicate a similar design and configuration to suit their network infrastructure.
Download or read book In Space No One Can Hear You Scream written by Arthur C. Clarke and published by Baen Publishing Enterprises. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade Paperback Halloween-themed science fiction anthology. Featuring a mix of classic science fiction reprints where the scary stuff happens in space. THE UNIVERSE MAY NOT BE A NICE NEIGHBORHOOD . . . _The oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown,Ó the grand master of horror, H.P. Lovecraft, once wrote. And the greatest unknown is the vast universe, shrouded in eternal cosmic night. What things might be on other planets¾or in the dark gulfs between the stars? Giving very unsettling answers to that question are such writers as Arthur C. Clarke, George R. R. Martin, Theodore Sturgeon, Tony Daniel, Robert Sheckley, James. H. Schmitz, Clark Ashton Smith, Neal Asher, Sarah A. Hoyt, and more, all equally masters of science fiction and of terror. One might hope that in the void beyond the earth will be found friendly aliens, benevolent and possibly wiser than humanity, but dont be surprised if other worlds have unpleasant surprises in store for future visitors. And in vacuum, no one will be able to hear your screams¾as if it would do any good if they could . . . At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).
