Book Legume Crops

Download or read book Legume Crops written by Mohamed A. El-Esawi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legumes are flowering plants found in most of the archeological records of plants. Legumes are efficiently used as food crops for humans and animals, pulps for paper and timber manufacturing, sources for fuel and oil production, ornamental plants, and cover crops such as cereals and other staple foods. Additionally, they can be utilized for other purposes, including the production of massive amounts of organic nitrogen. This book reviews the fundamental advances related to the characterization and breeding of legume crops for improved food security. Moreover, it sheds new light on the current research trends and future research directions related to legume crop studies. This book will provoke interest for various readers, researchers, and scientists, who may find this information useful for the advancement of legume productivity.

Book New Perennial Legumes for Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book New Perennial Legumes for Sustainable Agriculture written by Sarita Jane Bennett and published by ISBS. This book was released on 2003 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The farming systems of southern Australia currently rely on annual legume-based pastures to provide nitrogen for the following crop, particularly wheat. In recent years with increasing levels of salinity, acidity and rising watertables it has been acknowledged that such a system is unsustainable, with a requirement for a system that uses more water, such as a more perennial-based system. Lucerne is currently the only major perennial herbaceous legume in use in Mediterranean Australia. There is therefore an urgent need to find other perennial legumes that would fit into the farming systems of southern Australia. This book is a comprehensive review of the current knowledge of perennial legumes for Mediterranean areas. It is divided into three sections. The first section describes the background to the problems in Mediterranean Australia, the role of perennial legumes in the Mediterranean Basin, and the adaptation of perennial plants to dry areas. The second focuses on the natural distribution and agricultural potential of some of the major legume genera including Medicago and Trifolium, and the importance that rhizobia has in extending the distribution of these genera for agriculture. The final section describes case studies where perennial legumes are in use, including Italy, North Africa and Inner Mongolia. The book is of value to researchers working in the fields of grassland and rangeland improvement, Mediterranean farming systems, genetic resources, and pasture and forage ecology.

Download or read book Grain Legumes written by Antonio M. De Ron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to grain legumes and include eight chapters devoted to the breeding of specific grain legume crops and five general chapters dealing with important topics which are common to most of the species in focus. Soybean is not included in the book as it is commonly considered an oil crop more than a grain legume and is included in the Oil Crops Volume of the Handbook of Plant Breeding.Legume species belong to the Fabaceae family and are characterized by their fruit, usually called pod. Several species of this family were domesticated by humans, such as soybean, common bean, faba bean, pea, chickpea, lentil, peanut, or cowpea. Some of these species are of great relevance as human and animal food. Food legumes are consumed either by their immature pod or their dry seeds, which have a high protein content. Globally, grain legumes are the most relevant source of plant protein, especially in many countries of Africa and Latin America, but there are some constraints in their production, such as a poor adaptation, pest and diseases and unstable yield. Current research trends in Legumes are focused on new methodologies involving genetic and omic studies, as well as new approaches to the genetic improvement of these species, including the relationships with their symbiotic rhizobia.
