Book Pesticide Resistance

Download or read book Pesticide Resistance written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1986-02-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a symposium sponsored by the Board on Agriculture, this comprehensive book explores the problem of pesticide resistance; suggests new approaches to monitor, control, or prevent resistance; and identifies the changes in public policy necessary to protect crops and human health from the ravages of pests. The volume synthesizes the most recent information from a wide range of disciplines, including entomology, genetics, plant pathology, biochemistry, economics, and public policy. It also suggests research avenues that would indicate how to counter future problems. A glossary provides the reader with additional guidance.

Book Population Genetics of Soybean Aphid

Download or read book Population Genetics of Soybean Aphid written by Lucia C. Orantes and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Since its introduction in 2000 to North America, the soybean aphid (Aphis glycines) has spread across much of the U.S. and Canadian soybean growing regions, and has become one of the most damaging insect pests of this crop. Such rapid and large-scale pattern suggests that A. glycines has high rates of adaptability and dispersal. These trends have been linked to the effect of host transition, and the ability of aphid populations to clone and migrate across soybean fields during summer. The soybean aphid is a holocyclic insect that alternates between two hosts: (1) buckthorn, where sexual reproduction, oviposition and overwintering occur; and (2) soybean, where clonal reproduction and large-scale migration occur. We conducted a study using eight North American locations where aphids were collected twice, early and late in the soybean season. To analyze the genetic structure of the sampled populations, we used six microsatellite markers, and developed and validated twenty-four Single Nucleotide Polymorphic markers. These markers are, to my knowledge, the first SNPs to be validated for soybean aphid. The objective for the study was to analyze the genetic structure of soybean aphid populations during the transition from buckthorn to soybean in spring, and the progressive changes in the genetics of these populations after clonal reproduction and migration. The hypotheses from the study were that (1) soybean aphids go through population bottlenecks that differentiate population at the beginning of the season, and (2) there is a large-scale dispersion of aphids across soybean fields once the aphids have reached a population outbreak. Results from the study showed strong population differentiation among early populations and supported the hypothesis of large-scale dispersal among late populations, demonstrating that indeed there is a continuous change in the genetic structure of the soybean aphid explained through the migratory behavior of the aphids. Future studies are needed to understand the effect of host abundance and distribution in the genetic composition of soybean aphid populations, as well as to track the genetic diversity of soybean aphid over years without outbreaks.

Book excerpt: The soybean is a crop of global importance and is one of most frequently cultivated crops worldwide. It is rich in oil and protein, used for human and animal consumption as well as for industrial purposes. Soybean plants also play an important role in crop diversification and benefit the growth of other crops, adding nitrogen to the soil during crop rotation. With contributions from eminent researchers from around the world, The Soybean provides a concise coverage of all aspects of this important crop, including genetics and physiology, varietal improvement, production and protection technology, utilization and nutritional value.

Book Aphids as Crop Pests 2nd Edition

Download or read book Aphids as Crop Pests 2nd Edition written by Helmut F van Emden and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids are among the major global pest groups, causing serious economic damage to many food and commodity crops in most parts of the world. This revision and update of the well-received first edition published ten years ago reflects the expansion of research in genomics, endosymbionts and semiochemicals, as well as the shift from control of aphids with insecticides to a more integrated approach imposed by increasing resistance in the aphids and government restrictions on pesticides. The book remains a comprehensive and up-to-date reference work on the biology of aphids, the various methods of controlling them and the progress of integrated pest management as illustrated by ten case histories.

Book excerpt: Worldwide, soybean seed proteins represent a major source of amino acids for human and animal nutrition. Soybean seeds are an important and economical source of protein in the diet of many developed and developing countries. Soy is a complete protein and soyfoods are rich in vitamins and minerals.Soybean protein provides all the essential amino acids in the amounts needed for human health. Recent research suggests that soy may also lower risk of prostate, colon and breast cancers as well as osteoporosis and other bone health problems and alleviate hot flashes associated with menopause. This volume is expected to be useful for student, researchers and public who are interested in soybean.
