Book Genetics and Breeding in the Improvement of the Soybean Classic Reprint

Download or read book Genetics and Breeding in the Improvement of the Soybean Classic Reprint written by Clyde Melvin Woodworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genetics and Breeding in the Improvement of the Soybean Soybean seeds with two embryos have been Observed by Owen. These occurred in a Chinese variety to the extent of 44 percent (based on a sample of seeds). There apparently exists a tendency for the abnormality to be inherited in this variety. An occasional double embryo seed was also observed by Owen in the Mandarin and Manchu varieties. The two embryos inclosed within the same seed coat were not identical, as pointed out by Owen, since in progenies segregating for cotyledon color two cotyledons were of one color and two of the other color. Hence it appeared likely that two ovules were fertilized and developed independently within the same seed coat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eleven Years of Soybean Investigations: Varieties, Seeding, Storage The Alhambra field, where the variety tests for southern Illinois have been made, consists of dark loessial soil of medium to strong acidity. Only one soil type has been mapped on the field; namely, brown - gray silt loam on tight clay (putnam silt loam). The land is practically level, the west half being tile-drained and the east half surface - drained. Because of the impervious nature of the subsoil, drainage is not satisfactory. A rotation of corn, oats, soybeans, and wheat with a seeding of sweet clover as green manure has been practiced on this field. No animal manure has been applied. To the plots in the tests reported here limestone and rock phosphate have been applied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Soy Beans in Maine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soy Beans in Maine Classic Reprint written by Charles Dayton Woods and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soy Beans in Maine In order to grow the soy bean most economically, the soil should be inoculated with the organism. That forms root tubercles. The soil should be prepared as for corn or beans and should be free from lumps and clods. Fertilizers carrying phosphoric acid and potash are essential and on good land no nitrogen is needed if the soil is inoculated for root tubercles. Sown in drills 16 inches apart, about 3 pecks of seed is needed per acre. If drilled with a grain drill or sown broadcast more seed, perhaps a bushel per acre, will be needed. Soy beans can be grown with corn, mixing the seed at the rate of 10 quarts of corn and 7 of soy beans. Thus seeded the drills should be about 3 feet apart. When sown in drills they should be cultivated the same as common beans. In case of narrow spaces between drills, a hand wheel hoe does the work rapidly and well. Book Soy Beans and Secrets of Legume Inoculation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soy Beans and Secrets of Legume Inoculation Classic Reprint written by Isaac a Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soy Beans and Secrets of Legume Inoculation During the past fourteen years, practical experience and observation has convinced me that the Soy bean is probably the best plant known at present to grow protein for domestic animals in what is known as the corn belt, and second only to clover as an agent to supply nitrogen to the soil - even this latter point may be contested, if we consider the comparative time each crop occupies the land, and are satisfied to remove and sell off the land as small a per cent, of the crop as we do of the clover. As compared with the cow pea, it is hardier, may be planted earlier in the season, and makes its full plant growth more quickly. One summer I planted a field with Early Brown Soy beans and New Era cow peas, mixing the seed together in the planter, expecting the cow peas to continue growing and making succulence after the beans were ripe. But instead, by the time they were six weeks old, the cow peas were nearly covered, and never made much showing. It grows more erect, matures its seed more evenly, and the seed is not subject to attacks of the bean weevil, while cow peas are sometimes entirely destroyed by this pest. It is far more productive of seed, and this seed contains about 50 per cent, more protein than cow peas. Its many varieties, ranging from very early to very late, makes its climatic range very great. Soil and Rotation It will thrive in any soil in which corn will grow. It can be made to enter nicely into rotation with various other crops. When harvested early it gives a fine opportunity to seed with rye, wheat or vetch. If this is not desirable a fine seed bed is easily prepared for a spring crop and may be followed by oats, barley, timothy, clover, sugar beets etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soybeans: Certain Agronomic, Physical, Chemical, Economic, and Industrial Aspects The Origin of the soybean is lost in antiquity. Ancient Chinese'litera ture, however, reveals that it was extensively cultivated and highly valued as a food as far back as written records were kept. The oldest recorded evidence of soybean existence is found in a description of the plants of China written by the Chinese emperor, Sheng Nung, in 2838 b.c. Soybeans are mentioned repeatedly in later Chinese records. These records which deal with methods of culture, varieties for different purposes, and numerous uses, indicate that the soybean was perhaps one of the oldest crops grown by man. For a long time soybeans have been considered the most important legume in China and one of the five sacred grains essential to the existence of Chinese civilization.
