Book Soviet Historiography of Philosophy

Download or read book Soviet Historiography of Philosophy written by Evert van der Zweerde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Scientific history of philosophy' was one of the professional branches of Soviet philosophy, and a place where philosophical culture was preserved in an often hostile environment. Situated between the ideological exigencies of the Soviet system with its Marxist-Leninist `theoretical foundation' and the need for an objective account of philosophy's past, Soviet history of philosophy displays the characteristic features of Soviet philosophy as a whole, including a forceful reappearance of its Hegelian background. This book is the only Western monograph on this important part of Soviet philosophy, thus filling the last main gap in Western `Philosophical Sovietology'. At the same time, it offers the first survey of Soviet philosophy after the disappearance of the Soviet system itself, embarking on an historical and meta-philosophical investigation of Soviet philosophical culture. The book will be of interest to students of Soviet and Russian philosophy, historians of philosophy and specialists in Soviet studies.

This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems– both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.

Book excerpt: Otto Treumann (1919-2001) is a major pioneer in the modernization of graphic design in the Netherlands. Inspired by Swiss typography and Bauhaus aesthetics, Treumann's oeuvre combines easy-to-read visual elements with iconoclastic color treatment, enhanced by his wide knowledge of printing techniques acquired during the Second World War when he forged documents for the resistance. Treumann enjoyed a special relationship with industrial clients, devising house styles and logos for the publishing house Wolters Noordhoff, the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects and El Al Airlines; he also designed posters for the Industries Fair in Utrecht, the Rotterdam Ahoy and Tattoo in Delft. Based on materials from the Otto Treumann Archive at the Stedelijk Museum, and designed by Irma Boom, this volume surveys Treumann's career.

Book Voices of the Victims

Download or read book Voices of the Victims written by Hannes H. Gissurarson and published by New Direction. This book was released on with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 20th century, communism claimed the lives of at least 100 million people. But often it is regarded with more sympathy than the other deadly totalitarian creed, national socialism. Despite several plausible accounts of famines, mass executions, labour camps and oppression, many Western intellectuals were either supporters or fellow-travellers of the communists. This illustrated report is about some of the most noteworthy books, travelogues, novels, memories, and historical treatises that came out in the great struggle between totalitarian communism and liberal democracy from the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution onwards.

Book Statehood and the Law of Self Determination

Download or read book Statehood and the Law of Self Determination written by David Raic and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most international lawyers assumed that the distribution of the land surface of the earth between States was more or less final after the end of decolonization, recent practice has disproved this assumption. Eritrea separated from Ethiopia and new States were created out of the former Soviet Union, the former Yugoslavia and the former Czechoslovakia. There is no reason to believe that these events form the end of the creation of new States. Numerous communities within existing States claim a right to full separate statehood on the basis of their entitlement to an alleged right to self-determination. However, in most cases, the international community rejected such claims to statehood, even if the territorial entity satisfied the traditional criteria for statehood. On the other hand, in other cases, including some of those mentioned above, the international community acknowledged the statehood of entities which clearly failed to meet these criteria. In the light of the above-mentioned developments, this book examines the modern law of statehood, and in particular the role of the law of self-determination in the process of the formation of States in international law. The study shows that the law of statehood has changed considerably since the establishment of the United Nations. It is argued that the law of self-determination is particularly relevant for explaining the international community's position regarding the general recognition, or the general denial, of statehood of different territorial entities under contemporary international law.
