Book Energy Pricing in the Soviet Union

Download or read book Energy Pricing in the Soviet Union written by Mr.Manmohan S. Kumar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-12-01 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy exports, which are already the primary source of Soviet convertible currency earnings and an important contributor to the budget, could bring in much more revenue if the Soviet Union were to reduce its extremely high levels of energy consumption. To encourage this process, energy prices need to be raised substantially. Under plausible assumptions, it is shown that an increase in prices could yield sizable foreign exchange earnings. Large increases in energy prices could, however, threaten the solvency of industrial enterprises, precipitate major economic and social dislocation, and severely strain interrepublican economic relationships.

The opening chapter describes how oil prices have impinged on other elements of the economy and assesses the costs and benefits, in the short and long term, of low prices. The following three chapters deal with different groups of countries and indicate clearly that for none of them do lower oil prices have unequivocally positive or negative effects — a situation examined in the chapter on the international financial system. The last three chapters analyse the shifts lower prices are likely to produce in relations among the groups closely involved in the oil market.

Book Eastern Europe and Oil

Download or read book Eastern Europe and Oil written by Ethan S. Burger and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nations of Eastern Europe depend on Soviet oil because it is less expensive than that bought at world prices, it can be obtained without draining scarce hard-currency reserves, and it is reliably supplied. Since 1970, however, the Soviet Union has been urging its CMEA/Warsaw Pact allies to seek additional suppliers. The Central Intelligence Agency predicts that Soviet oil production will level off in the near future and then decline. Lower production and increased domestic consumption, the CIA suggests, will cause the Soviets to cut their oil exports to the West and hold at a constant level their oil exports to Eastern Europe. This paper postulates that as long as industrial growth in Eastern Europe continues, the demand for oil will increase. The non-Soviet CMEA nations cannot now afford to buy large amounts of oil from OPEC. For this reason, the Soviet Union will probably continue to increase its oil sales to the CMEA nations, rather than risk their economic deterioration, which might lead to political unrestand instability. Book Oil and World Power Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Oil and World Power Routledge Revivals written by Peter R. Odell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil industry is the world’s largest commercial enterprise. Its extent is global; international issues are consistently influenced by considerations of oil production and consumption, while the international communications networks of the larger oil companies rival those of many nations. In this, the eighth edition of Oil and World Power, published in 1986, Peter Odell explains the complexities of this gigantic empire and its influence on the world. The far-reaching chapters discuss the U.S.A, the Soviet Union, O.P.E.C., Japan and the oil-consuming countries of the developing world. Evaluating the changing patterns of oil supply and the dramatic fall in oil prices in 1986, Odell proposes a number of forward-thinking conclusions surrounding the relationship between oil in global politics and economic development. This is an exceptionally interesting and relevant work, of great value to those with an interest in the oil industry, global power and international economic development.
