Book Improvement of Desert Ranges in Soviet Central Asia

Download or read book Improvement of Desert Ranges in Soviet Central Asia written by Nina T. Nechaeva and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvement of Desert Ranges in Soviet Central Asia (1985) examines the progress made in the Soviet Union’s attempts to increase desert vegetation without using irrigation or fertilizers. Prominent Soviet scientists show that by making use of ecological resources alone – particularly moisture reserves and mineral nutrients available in the root zone of the soil – desert ranges worldwide can be made into more productive grazing land.

Book A Geography of the Soviet Union

Download or read book A Geography of the Soviet Union written by John C. Dewdney and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Geography of the Soviet Union, Third Edition presents the significant geographical elements of the contemporary U.S.S.R. This book explores the human, economic, and political conditions and problems posed by the various geographical features. Organized into 11 chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the comparison of the relative sizes of U.S.A, U.K., and U.S.S.R. This text then provides a detailed account of the main features of the geological structure of the Soviet Union. Other chapters consider the latitude distribution of the land area of the U.S.S.R. that is extremely significant in the effect it has on climatic conditions. This book discusses as well the historical geography of Soviet Union, tracing the stages by which so large an area has been brought within the frontiers of a single political unit. This book is intended to be suitable for fifth and sixth level pupils in school as well as for first-year university students.

Book Geographic Perspectives on Soviet Central Asia

Download or read book Geographic Perspectives on Soviet Central Asia written by Robert Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-10-04 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a unique survey, based on new census data, Geographic Perspectives on Soviet Central Asia highlights the region's geographic, economic and ecological problems since 1945. Painting a grim picture, this book investigates how the combination of rapid population growth and declining per capita investment is causing economic conditions to slide in rural areas and encouraging an ecological catastrophe. The authors discuss the effects of low rural out-migration, and show that at current growth rates the rural working-age population will double with each generation. Unprecedented in a developed country, this is causing the region to become more rather than less rural. Soviet Central Asia is an area of low productivity, and the book considers the lack of support from Soviet central government to the region. Wishing to maximise their return to capital and labour, the government is concentrating its investment in the European West and directing insufficient funds for a growing workforce in Central Asia. Soviet Central Asia also faces grave ecological problems; the declining level of the Aral Sea, extensive soil salinization and water pollution, all largely due to past attempts at irrigation. The authors consider the effect of these disasters on the area, and look to future possibilities in this very important region of the world.

Download or read book The Other Side of the Mountain Mujahideen Tactics in the Soviet Afghan War written by Ali Ahmad Jalali and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-05-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Other Side of the Mountain: Mujahadeen Tactics in the Soviet-Afghan War is a 1998 non-fiction book written by former Afghan Army Colonel Ali Ahmad Jalali and American military scholar Lester W. Grau. The book was commissioned by the United States Marine Corps Studies and Analysis Division to complement Grau's previous book, "The Bear Went Over the Mountain." Jalali and Grau had planned travel into Afghanistan to interview Mujahideen fighters in late 1996, but were forced to remain in Pakistan when a Taliban offensive campaign started to seize major portions of Afghanistan, eventually capturing Kabul on September 27. Jalali interviewed approximately 40 Mujahideen during the month which the authors spent in Pakistan and an associate, Major Nasrullah Safi, conducted interviews inside Afghanistan for two months to collect additional data.
