Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sesqui-Centennial and Historical Souvenir of the Greater Pittsburgh: September Twenty-Seventh to October Third and November Twenty-Fifth Pittsburgh is one hundred and fifty years old. Therefore, the nearly one million people who live within its borders rejoice and befittingly celebrate. And much reason have they to shout, to sing, to put on gala attire, and parade, and extend greetings and welcome to the whole world. For, is not the city great, and day by day growing greater? Supreme in industrial developments, rich beyond comparison in the gifts of nature, patriotic in the affairs of the state and nation, brilliant in the achievements of science and art, aggressive in commercial endeavor, Pittsburgh has attained an enviable position on its one-hundred-fiftieth birthday. No pains nor expense has been spared by those in charge of the arrangements for the proper celebrating of the city's birth, and they and every other son and daughter of Father Pitt gladly and cordially extend greetings to the whole world, and especially to those who come to help celebrate his honored natal day. And, too, the Author and Publisher of this volume extends greetings, and takes occasion here to thank those who have so generously supported him with their patronage, thus making possible the issuance of the Sesqui-Centennial and Historical Souvenir of The Greater Pittsburgh. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1758, Being a Sketch of the Founding of Pittsburgh: Reprinted From the Sesqui-Centennial Number of the Gazette Times, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, of Sunday, September 27th, 1908 The rule of the exclusively Whig party in England was over at last. Ever since the House of Hanover had come to the throne, this party of the aristocracy had governed. Under King George II, it had sunk from mediocrity to in competency. The Duke of Newcastle, its prime minister, had been such for thirty years, in all of which period he is said to have learned nothing and achieved nothing. For years England and France had been at war. Some times the issues were obscured, but, to the observant eye, it had been apparent for some years that the contests were really for supremacy in America and India, in both of which countries England and France were attempting to build up empires. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the nineteenth century, Pittsburgh emerged as a major manufacturing center in the United States. Its rise as a leading producer of steel, glass, and coal was fueled by machine technology and mass immigration, developments that fundamentally changed the industrial workplace. Because Pittsburgh’s major industries were almost exclusively male and renowned for their physical demands, the male working body came to symbolize multiple often contradictory narratives about strength and vulnerability, mastery and exploitation. In Bodies of Work, Edward Slavishak explores how Pittsburgh and the working body were symbolically linked in civic celebrations, the research of social scientists, the criticisms of labor reformers, advertisements, and workers’ self-representations. Combining labor and cultural history with visual culture studies, he chronicles a heated contest to define Pittsburgh’s essential character at the turn of the twentieth century, and he describes how that contest was conducted largely through the production of competing images. Slavishak focuses on the workers whose bodies came to epitomize Pittsburgh, the men engaged in the arduous physical labor demanded by the city’s metals, glass, and coal industries. At the same time, he emphasizes how conceptions of Pittsburgh as quintessentially male limited representations of women in the industrial workplace. The threat of injury or violence loomed large for industrial workers at the turn of the twentieth century, and it recurs throughout Bodies of Work: in the marketing of artificial limbs, statistical assessments of the physical toll of industrial capitalism, clashes between labor and management, the introduction of workplace safety procedures, and the development of a statewide workmen’s compensation system.
