Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenir of Loretto Centenary: October 10, 1899 The following work is simply what its title indicates, - a Souvenir of the Centenary of this parish, the oldest in Western Pennsylvania. It makes no pretence to originality, but is merely a compilation of papers, facts, names and dates, which show forth the progress made during the century just closed, and furnish valuable and interesting data for the future historian of the church in this diocese. Even as a compilation it is far from perfect, for its matter was collected and arranged during the hours that could be spared from a busy pastoral life; and many items, well worthy of being recorded, have been passed without notice, and others, herein noted, have been inadequately treated. Such as it is, however, it is offered to the public in the hope that whatever measure of success it may meet with may stimulate other pastors to diligently gather, and to preserve in permanent and easily accessible form, the records of their respective parishes, and to collect the fragments of parochial history, lest they be forever lost. Such work will be appreciated in future years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Industrial Genius

Download or read book Industrial Genius written by Kenneth Warren and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2007-02-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Schwab was known to his employees, business associates, and competitors as a congenial and charismatic person-a 'born salesman.' Yet Schwab was much more than a salesman-he was a captain of industry, a man who streamlined and economized the production of steel and ran the largest steelmaking conglomerate in the world. A self-made man, he became one of the wealthiest Americans during the Gilded Age, only to die penniless in 1939.Schwab began his career as a stake driver at Andrew Carnegie's Edgar Thomson steel works in Pittsburgh at the age of seventeen. By thirty-five, he was president of Carnegie Steel. In 1901, he helped form the U.S. Steel Corporation, a company that produced well over half the nation's iron and steel. In 1904, Schwab left U.S. Steel to head Bethlehem Steel, which after twelve years under his leadership, became the second-largest steel producer in America. President Woodrow Wilson called on Schwab to head the Emergency Fleet Corporation to produce merchant ships for the transport of troops and materials abroad during World War I.Kenneth Warren presents a compelling biography that chronicles the startling success of Schwab's business career, his leadership abilities, and his drive to advance steel-making technology and operations. Through extensive research and use of previously unpublished archival documentation, Warren offers a new perspective on the life of a monumental figure-a true visionary-in the industrial history of America.

From Irish Kings to indentured servants in Philadelphia, from pioneers in Minnesota to farmers on the plains of Kansas, my Kennedy family spread their name and their DNA throughout the world! Containing numerous photographs and graphics, this easy to read account of my family is of interest to the hundreds of Charles and Mary (Gillen) Kennedy descendants populating America and the globe as well as those interested in American history. The book begins with Kennedy Kings and castles in Ireland and continues with Charles and Mary in Philadelphia and then west to Cambria County, Pennsylvania with Catholic Russian Prince, Father Augustine Gallitzin. Oral accounts describe the 1862 Sioux massacre on their community in the Minnesota Territory. This ultimately drove them to Osage Mission, Kansas where my grandparents Lawrence and Elizabeth (Fager) Kennedy raised my mother Helen (Kennedy) Rush and their other 15 children through the depression and the dust bowl in Neosho County, Kansas.

And how did he forfeit their confidence and lose the preseidency of U.S. Steel? Drawing upon previously undiscovered sources, Robert hessen answers these questions in the first biography of Schwab.
