Book Growth Model for Uneven aged Loblolly Pine Stands

Download or read book Growth Model for Uneven aged Loblolly Pine Stands written by Ching-Rong Lin and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A density-dependent matrix growth model of uneven-aged loblolly pine stands was developed with data from 991 permanent plots in the southern United States. The model predicts the number of pine, soft hardwood, and hard hardwood trees in 13 diameter classes, based on equations for ingrowth, upgrowth, and mortality. Projections of 6 to 10 years agreed with the growth of stands between the last two inventories. In 300-year simulations of undisturbed growth, softwood species were replaced by hardwoods, in accord with previous knowledge. Soft hardwood species became dominant on good sites and hard hardwoods on poor sites. Basal area oscillated over time, converging slowly towards a steady state. Changes in tree size diversity were correlated positively with basal area. Without disturbance, species diversity would decrease. For economic analysis, equations were developed to predict total tree height, sawlog length and volume, pulpwood volume, and volume of top sawtimber, as functions of tree diameter and stand basal area. Simulations of three cutting regimes showed that management would lead to a steady state faster than would natural growth. Management aimed at maintaining the current average distribution would result in size and species diversity similar to that of an unmanaged stand. From a financial point of view, the q-factor guide and a 13-in.- (330-mm-) diameter-limit cut would be superior to the average current management regime. The diameter-limit regime would have the greatest effect on lowering tree size diversity and an effect on species diversity similar to that of the q-factor guide. A computer program, SOUTHPRO, was developed to simulate the effects of other management alternatives.

Book Predictor Sort Sampling Tight T s and the Analysis of Covariance

Download or read book Predictor Sort Sampling Tight T s and the Analysis of Covariance written by S. P. Verrill and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years wood strength researchers have begun to replace experimental unit allocation via random sampling with allocation via sorts based on nondestructive measurements of strength predictors such as modulus of elasticity and specific gravity. Although this procedure has the potential of greatly increasing experimental sensitivity, as currently implemented it can easily reduce sensitivity. In this paper we discuss the problem and we present solutions. Given the existence of nondestructive measurements of strength predictors, our methods can be used to reduce sample sizes. We have written a public domain computer program that implements the methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall Street Journal’s Five Best Books on the Confederates’ Lost Cause Southern Association for Women Historians Julia Cherry Spruill Prize Even without the right to vote, members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy proved to have enormous social and political influence throughout the South—all in the name of preserving Confederate culture. Karen Cox traces the history of the UDC, an organization founded in 1894 to vindicate the Confederate generation and honor the Lost Cause. In this edition, with a new preface, Cox acknowledges the deadly riots in Charlottesville, Virginia, showing why myths surrounding the Confederacy continue to endure. The Daughters, as UDC members were popularly known, were daughters of the Confederate generation. While southern women had long been leaders in efforts to memorialize the Confederacy, UDC members made the Lost Cause a movement about vindication as well as memorialization. They erected monuments, monitored history for "truthfulness," and sought to educate coming generations of white southerners about an idyllic past and a just cause—states' rights. Soldiers' and widows' homes, perpetuation of the mythology of the antebellum South, and pro-southern textbooks in the region's white public schools were all integral to their mission of creating the New South in the image of the Old. UDC members aspired to transform military defeat into a political and cultural victory, in which states' rights and white supremacy remained intact. To the extent they were successful, the Daughters helped to preserve and perpetuate an agenda for the New South that included maintaining the social status quo. Placing the organization's activities in the context of the postwar and Progressive-Era South, Cox describes in detail the UDC's origins and early development, its efforts to collect and preserve manuscripts and artifacts and to build monuments, and its later role in the peace movement and World War I. This remarkable history of the organization presents a portrait of two generations of southern women whose efforts helped shape the social and political culture of the New South. It also offers a new historical perspective on the subject of Confederate memory and the role southern women played in its development.

Book Confederate Sheet Music

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Lawrence Abel
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2015-06-14
  • ISBN : 1476606382
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Confederate Sheet Music written by E. Lawrence Abel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American Civil War, songs united and inspired people on both sides. The North had a well-established music publishing industry when the war broke out, but the South had no such industry. The importance of music as an expression of the South's beliefs was obvious; as one music publisher said, "The South must not only fight her own battles but sing her own songs and dance to music composed by her own children." Southern entrepreneurs quickly rose to the challenge. This reference book is distinguished by three major differences from previously published works. First, it lists sheet music that is no longer extant (and listed nowhere else). Second, it gives complete lyrics for all extant songs, a rich source for researchers. And third, a brief historical background has been provided for many of the songs. Each entry provides as much of the following as possible (staying faithful to the typography of each title page): the title as published, names of all lyricists, composers and publishers; dates of publication; cities of publication; and if applicable, the names of catalogs or magazines in which the song appeared. Music published in Southern cities under Federal occupation is excluded.
