Book Southern Families Made America

Download or read book Southern Families Made America written by Howard Ray White and published by SouthernBooks. This book was released on 2023-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans today have great difficulty believing that our nation's westward expansion -- over a span of 241 years, from founding Jamestown, Virginia Colony, in 1607, to the Republic of Texas (1836-1846), to expansion to the Pacific by 1848 - was the hard work and sacrifice of Southern families, often large families. Today's culture minimizes achievements of Southern people and overly exaggerates so-called achievements of Northern people. It was the bravery, hard work and sacrifice of both Southern Whites and Southern Blacks that made America. Ten generations of pioneering moms and dads and sons and daughters. In 1607, the first settlers arrived at Jamestown, Virginia Colony. Thirteen years later, in 1620, Puritan Separatists, instead of going to Virginia Colony, went northward to settle what would become New England and established controlling, church-state colonial governments. American's Revolution, fought first in the Northern colonies, was unsuccessful there. So, the British military headed south to put down the American Revolution in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia colonies. Back-country Southern people defended their land with success. Under George Washington's leadership, the War was won at Yorktown, Virginia Colony in 1781. The 1788 treaty in Paris granted Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia control over western land out to the Mississippi River. The fight had been over control of western land, not the price of tea, or taxes on imports, or marine shipping restrictions. George Washington, of Virginia, was America's first 8-year president. Other 8-year presidents from Virginia were Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson, a Virginian, arranged the Louisiana Purchase, paying France only 3 cents per acre for land stretching from the Mississippi River westward out to the northwest Pacific Ocean. In 1815, Andrew Jackson, of Tennessee, brilliantly led Tennessee militia and others to defeat a massive British invasion of New Orleans, the last battle of the War of 1812. Great Britain learned to never fight a war with the Nation Builders of the Southern States. In 1836, Sam Houston, also a Tennessean, led Mexican Texas militia in a well-planned battle to defeat President Santa Anna's Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto. Houston captured Santa Anna and forced him to grant independence for the Republic of Texas. Ten years later, in 1846, having confidence in U. S. President James K. Polk, of Tennessee, Texans voted to merge their huge and prosperous Republic with America and become the State of Texas. President Polk, also a Nation Builder from Tennessee, then led a war of conquest against Mexico to secure the land that remained between Texas and California at the Pacific Ocean. Today, descendants of the Southern Families that Made America are trying to save our country. The democratic principles that Southern Families gave we Americans 175 years ago are, sadly, disappearing. Please read this amazing book, be proud of our South and help us save it.

Book Made In Texas

Download or read book Made In Texas written by Michael Lind and published by . This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows that President George W. Bush is from Texas. But few of us know the role his home state plays in his presidency, and in our country. In this dual biography of man and state, Michael Lind confronts the chief crises of Bush's presidency--the economy, the Middle East, and religious fundamentalism--and traces their roots back to Texas, a state, Lind argues, that yields salient clues to the future course of our country.Widely praised as an iconoclastic and brilliant political observer, Lind, a fifth generation Texan, chronicles the ethnic clash that produced modern Texas, the well-known plundering of the state's natural resources at the hands of its elites, and finally the deep strain of "Old Testament religiosity" which, having originated in Texas, now reaches all over the globe in the form of Bush's foreign policy. In the tradition of Gary Wills's Reagan's America, Made in Texas provides a wholly original cultural history that should change the way we understand not just our president, but our country.

Book Slavery by Another Name

Download or read book Slavery by Another Name written by Douglas A. Blackmon and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the mistreatment of black Americans. In this 'precise and eloquent work' - as described in its Pulitzer Prize citation - Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history - an 'Age of Neoslavery' that thrived in the aftermath of the Civil War through the dawn of World War II. Using a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, Blackmon unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude thereafter. By turns moving, sobering and shocking, this unprecedented account reveals these stories, the companies that profited the most from neoslavery, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

Now with a new afterword, this edition stands as an invaluable contribution to American social history. It is a living, revelatory chronicle of life rarely observed by the academe. A powerhouse.--Studs Terkel "Here is labor history in intensely human terms. Neither great impersonal forces nor deadening statistics are allowed to get in the way of people. If students of the New South want both the dimensions and the feel of life and labor in the textile industry, this book will be immensely satisfying.--Choice

Book Southern Literature Cold War Culture and the Making of Modern America

Download or read book Southern Literature Cold War Culture and the Making of Modern America written by Jordan J. Dominy and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Cold War, national discourse strove for unity through patriotism and political moderation to face a common enemy. Some authors and intellectuals supported that narrative by casting America’s complicated history with race and poverty as moral rather than merely political problems. Southern Literature, Cold War Culture, and the Making of Modern America examines southern literature and the culture within the United States from the period just before the Cold War through the civil rights movement to show how this literature won a significant place in Cold War culture and shaped the nation through the time of Hillbilly Elegy. Tackling cultural issues in the country through subtext and metaphor, the works of authors like William Faulkner, Lillian Smith, Robert Penn Warren, Eudora Welty, Ralph Ellison, Alice Walker, and Walker Percy redefined “South” as much more than a geographical identity within an empire. The “South” has become a racially coded sociopolitical and cultural identity associated with white populist conservatism that breaks geographical boundaries and, as it has in the past, continues to have a disproportionate influence on the nation’s future and values.
