Download or read book Southern Excursions written by George Garrett and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few if any are better endowed than George Garrett to comment on the general and the particular, the long and the short, of southern letters in our time. Garrett— a prolific and internationally renowned author of fiction, poetry, drama, and biography as well as a teacher, editor, critic, and frequent jurist for literary competitions—has been immersed in the writers and literature of his native region for almost a half century. Southern Excursions contains more than fifty of the best essays, reviews, and other short pieces of his career. For the connoisseur of good writing, this book is a depository, a treasure, a veritable time capsule of southern, literary, and American culture. Without sacrificing reverence for modern masters such as Faulkner, O’Connor, and Welty, Garrett has consistently embraced worthy new artists through the years, deftly and judiciously drawing the line between critical acclaim and popular success. Payton Davis, Shelby Foote, Walker Percy, William HoVman, Madison Jones, Reynolds Price, Robert Morgan, R. H. W. Dillard, Wendell Berry, Doris Betts, William Goyen, Mary Lee Settle, Randall Kenan, David Huddle, Allan Gurganus, Dorothy Allison—these are a few of the writers Garrett has championed. If some names sound less familiar, Garrett, in these pages, will inspire readers to swift investigation. The author’s charm, wit, and anecdotal style make reading Southern Excursions a delight, and yet there’s no mistaking his erudition. Wise like a prophet, with a talent scout’s enthusiasm, Garrett is not afraid to tell unwelcome truths, covering topics that include southern publishing houses and literary quarterlies, the alliance between writers and academia, the state of criticism and theory, and, most eloquently, the persistence of place, memory, and the Civil War as themes in southern letters. Southern Excursions is a book for the ages, stowing as it does the sage views of one as learned, respected— and modest—in his time as George Garrett. “My strong suggestion [to readers],” he states, “is to plunge in and fare forward. Experience the story before turning to or trusting the opinions and judgments of others, myself included.”
Download or read book Steam s Camelot written by Jim Wrinn and published by TLC Publishing (VA). This book was released on 2001-05-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When diesel power began to displace steam in earnest during the early 1960s, the publicity departments at Southern and later at Norfolk Southern (after the merger of the former with Norfolk & Western) began offering excursions on passenger trains pulled by classic locomotives like Southern Railway No. 4501, N&W Class J No. 611, and the giant N&W A-Class No. 1218. For three decades, these steam-powered excursions delighted railfans throughout the Southeast. Color photography of these bygone behemoths and others in action transport readers back to the pastoral steam era, just as the excursion trains did for 30 years. A fascinating text details the nostalgia-filled public relations steam operations of 1964 to 1994, and is accompanied by rosters of every excursion documented during the period.

Download or read book A Court on Horseback written by Michael G Chang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Between 1751 and 1784, the Qianlong emperor embarked upon six southern tours, traveling from Beijing to Jiangnan and back. These tours were exercises in political theater that took the Manchu emperor through one of the Qing empire’s most prosperous regions. This study elucidates the tensions and the constant negotiations characterizing the relationship between the imperial center and Jiangnan, which straddled the two key provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Politically, economically, and culturally, Jiangnan was the undisputed center of the Han Chinese world; it also remained a bastion of Ming loyalism and anti-Manchu sentiment. How did the Qing court constitute its authority and legitimate its domination over this pivotal region? What were the precise terms and historical dynamics of Qing rule over China proper during the long eighteenth century? In the course of addressing such questions, this study also explores the political culture within and through which High Qing rule was constituted and contested by a range of actors, all of whom operated within socially and historically structured contexts. The author argues that the southern tours occupied a central place in the historical formation of Qing rule during a period of momentous change affecting all strata of the eighteenth-century polity."
