Book excerpt: Creating a National Collection' is the first exhibition to explore the unique relationship and influence the National Gallery has had on the evolution of Southampton?s collection. The historical links between the two galleries are significant, but little known. This fruitful relationship was established from the start, when Cllr Robert Chipperfield (1817?1911), whose bequest in 1911 led to the creation of the collection and the Art Gallery in Southampton, ensured that future acquisitions would be of a national calibre. Chipperfield had the foresight to stipulate that all purchases using his Trust fund should be undertaken in consultation with the Director of the National Gallery. Kenneth Clark, newly installed as the National Gallery?s Director in 1934 took a particularly active interest in advising Southampton on acquisitions and wrote its first formal collecting policy in 1936, which essentially remains in place today.00The exhibition will include outstanding works from Southampton, alongside the loan of 9 paintings from the National Gallery, by artists including Monet, Gainsborough, Maggi Hambling and Paula Rego. The two institutions have worked in partnership as part of the current 2019?21 National Gallery Curatorial Traineeship programme, supported by the Art Fund with the assistance of the Vivmar Foundation, with Curatorial Trainee, Jemma Craig, leading on a project to explore this dynamic and ongoing collaboration. Book excerpt: Arthur Jeffress was an art dealer and collector from a Virginian family who bequeathed his “subversive little collection” (Derek Hill) to Tate and Southampton City Art Gallery on his suicide in 1961. That suicide, a result of his expulsion from Venice, has been the subject of speculation in many memoirs. Gill Hedley's biography of Jeffress has benefited from access to many hundreds of unpublished letters written between Jeffress and Robert Melville, who ran Jeffress' own gallery from 1955-1961. The letters were written largely while Jeffress was in Venice and reveal a vivid picture of the London gallery world as well as frank details of artists, collectors and the definitive story of his suicide. Previously unpublished research reveals new information about the lives of Jeffress' lover John Deakin, his business partner Erica Brausen, the French photographer André Ostier and Henry Clifford, and the way in which all of them influenced Jeffress' first steps as a collector from the 1930s onwards.

His burgeoning artistic career was tragically cut short by his death aged 27 from TB, but his output of paintings was nevertheless prolific. This is the first book to provide an overview of his art and life and is published to coincide with an exhibition at the National Museum Wales marking the centenary of his death.Innes was born in South Wales and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, from 1905 to 1908, where he met fellow artist Derwent Lees. In 1907 he began a friendship with Augustus John, and with John and Lees Innes wandered over a remote and unfashionable part of North Wales in pursuit of a romantic freedom. He also made several trips abroad in order to paint, most importantly to Collioure, France, in 1908 and 1911.This new book, which incorporates a catalogue of all his known works, provides Innes' growing following of collectors with a definitive source of reference on his work. The scope of the book, while providing an analysis of Innes' stylistic developments, also touches upon, and illustrates, the work of some of his close friends and collaborators, Derwent Lees, Albert Rutherston, John Fothergill and Augustus John.
