Book Britain s First Muslims

Download or read book Britain s First Muslims written by Fred Halliday and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fear of the terrorist threat provoked by radical Islam has generated heated debates on multiculturalism and the integration of Muslim migrant communities in to Britain. Yet little is known about Britain's first Muslims, the Yemenis. Yemenis began settling in British port towns at the beginning of the 20th century, and afterwards became part of the immigrant labour force in Britain's industrial cities. Fred Halliday's groundbreaking research, based in Yemen and Britain, provides a fascinating case study for understanding the dynamics of immigrant cultures and the complexities of 'Muslim' identity in Britain. Telling the stories of sailor communities in Cardiff and industrial workers in Sheffield, Halliday tracks the evolution of community organizations and the impact of British government policy on their development. He analyses links between the diaspora and the homeland, and looks at how different migrant groups in Britain relate to each other under the 'Muslim' umbrella. In a fascinating new introduction to his classic study, Halliday explains how it can help us understand British Islam in an age which has produced both al Qaeda and the Yemeni-born boxer Prince Naseem.

Book Whare de yea belang

Download or read book Whare de yea belang written by Bill Griffiths and published by McNidder & Grace. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where de yea belang?brings together the distinctive vocabulary of the North East dialect. "Abackabeyont, bait-poke, cracket, drucken, etten, fettle, guissie pigs, lonnin, marra, nyen, plote, queen-cat, reckling, skinch, tew, upcast, vine, willok, yem, zookers!" If you enjoy finding out about dialect words – how and where and when they were used – and where they came from – this is the best guide to help you explore the world of North East dialect. Until the 20th century, dialect was a marker of economic, social and cultural change. We know that the North East maritime connections with the Dutch led to the introduction of many 'new' words. The Scottish influence of the keelmen (fisherman) on the Tyne and their effect on local language was much more radical. Although the Tyneside dialect and identity and this way of speaking is fast waning, the popularity of discovering this language and dialect shows there is still a great interest in the languages and dialect of the past. The late Bill Griffiths (1948–2007)was an extraordinary writer and poet: radical, experimental and scholarly, but also had a great sense of humour. He was a wonderful champion of the North East, its people and heritage. Born in Middlesex, he read history before graduating in 1969. Bill ran his own independent press and published political pamphlets and essays on the arts and poetry. After gaining a PhD in Old English he fled London and settled in Seaham where he embraced the northern way of life. 'He was also a scholar of Old English and dialect who know how to make his work accessible. Private and uncompetitive, he was at least these things: poet, archivist, scholar, translator, prison-rights campaigner, pianist, historian, curator, performer, editor, short-story writer, essayist, teacher, book-maker and lyricist. The Saturday before he died, Bill discharged himself from hospital to host the Dialect Day at the Morden Tower in Newcastle upon Tyne. He died as he lived: cataloguing, awarding Best Dialect prizes, opera on his radio, the poetry paramount.' Obituary, The Independent, 20 September 2007.

Well Suited's wide scope will appeal to a range of historians - those interested in costume and textiles, gender, Jewish history, economics and business as well as Leeds residents for whom, even if they were not dependent on it, the clothing industry provided a backdrop to everyday life for much of the twentieth century.' -Costume Society'This is a tale of one city, a comprehensive account of an industry extraordinarily important to the economy of Leeds for over a century. But while the book focuses on this national centre of clothing manufacture, the issues considered are anything but parochial.' -Costume Society'A most useful point of reference.' -English Historical Review'A fascinating survey... fills a major gap in the literature of economic and social history... the work will be widely welcomed by historians of all persuasions.' -Northern History'The book is attractively illustrated with maps and photographs of old Leeds. The appendix provides summary information on the histories of a considerable number of Leeds clothing firms, and will be of great assistance to future researchers... As an explanation of the changing fortunes of the Leeds clothing industry Honeyman's account is effective.' -Business History'A lively and well researched book.' - Geoffrey Owen, Financial TimesThe making of cloth as a central element within industrialization has been the subject of intense scrutiny, yet the industry that created garments from that cloth has been largely neglected. This book remedies this neglect through a study of the Leeds tailoring trade. Leeds occupies a special place in the history of the UK clothing industry: by the outbreak of the First World War it had become the nation's foremost producer of menswear, and the city remained the production and distribution centre for men's tailoring until the 1980s.

Book The Coming of the Comet

Download or read book The Coming of the Comet written by Nick Robins and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1812 Henry Bell’s Comet, a revolutionary paddle steamer, made her first journey on the Clyde. This marked the start of extraordinary developments that completely transformed shipping and transport in Britain, Europe and the Americas. The paddle steamer soon became the key link with Empire, pushing the Honourable East India Company’s wooden walls off the seas; it provided the all- important link with the Americas, and it offered emigrants to the New World a means of pushing westwards. In this fascinating new book Nick Robins analyses the remarkable impact of the paddle steamer and goes on to describe its development, both in terms of technology design and in relation to its effects on the transformation of nineteenth-century economies. He includes all Henry Bells disciples - the Burns brothers, Laird, Napier, Fulton, Syminton Cunard and Denny to name a few, and looks at their individual contributions. The impact of the paddle steamer on transport is difficult to overstate. It helped with the export of cotton from the American southern states, and with the transport of oil from Burma’s oil fields. The great stern wheelers of the Mississipi are legendary, but they also migrated to the Murray and Darling rivers in Australia, and to the Congo and Nile rivers in Africa, and the great rivers of Russia. This wonderful story of nineteenth-century ingenuity will appeal to shipping enthusiasts and those with a wider interest in industrial history.
