Download or read book South Philadelphia written by Murray Dubin and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From mayors and mummers to tap dancers and gamblers, South Philly has it all. This quintessential Philadelphia neighborhood boasts a complicated history of ethnic strife alongside community solidarity and, for good measure, some of the best bakeries in town. Among its many famous people South Philadelphia claims Marian Anderson, Frankie Avalon, Mayor Frank Rizzo, Temple Owl's coach John Chaney, Larry Fine of the Three Stooges, and "Loving" soap opera actress Lisa Peluso. For South Philadelphians, whether they stay or leave, the neighborhood is always happy to give you their opinions, and in this book they talk about their favorite subject to Murray Dubin, award winning journalist at the Philadelphia Inquirer, who also called South Philly home. Music and the arts are part of everyday life. Baritone Elliott Tessler says, "I'm not a celebrity, I'm a minor curiosity. If Pavarotti lived here, he would just be a minor curiosity, and probably because he was fat more than because he sang." Jean DiElsi remembers finding work in 1943 as a cashier at a diner that would become a South Philly landmark. "It was the only diner around and it was open 24 hours. If you went to dances, everybody would go to the Melrose Diner afterwards...No, there was no Mel or Rose. it was named after a can of tomatoes. In addition to being Philadelphia's first neighborhood, South Philly is the oldest ethnically and racially mixed big-city neighborhood in the nation. Catherine Williams remembers growing up black on Hoffman Street, "We had everything. We had the Jews, we had Italians, we had the blacks, we even had a Portuguese family. You never knew there was a color thing back then. I was the only black in my class at Southwark, but you never knew. In the third, fourth grade, some of those Italian boys was big, but you would have thought they were brothers to me." These are some of the people and the opinions that make up South Philadelphia and Murray Dubin will take you on a resident's tour of the ultimate city neighborhood. But for every interview, there's also a lot of history. And Dubin provides an historical examination that spans 300 years, from Thomas Jefferson living in South Philadelphia in 1793 to the burning of Palumbo's in 1994. Whether you're a South Philadelphian yourself, or just want to understand the South Philly phenomenon this book is a must. Author note: Murray Dubinwas born in South Philadelphia and is a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Book The Cabinetmaker s Account

Download or read book The Cabinetmaker s Account written by Jay Robert Stiefel and published by American Philosophical Society Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "English joiner John Head (1688–1754) immigrated to Philadelphia in 1717 and became one of its most successful artisans and merchants. However, his prominence was lost to history until the author’s discovery of his account book at the Library of the American Philosophical Society. A find of great historical importance, Head’s account book is the earliest and most complete to have survived from any cabinetmaker working in British North America or in Great Britain. It chronicles the commerce, crafts, and lifestyles of early Philadelphia’s entire community: its shopkeeping, cabinetmaking, chairmaking, clockmaking, glazing, metalworking, needleworking, property development, agriculture, botany, livestock, transport, foodstuffs, drink, hardware, fabrics, furnishings, household wares, clothing, building materials, and export trade. Jay Robert Stiefel, historian of Colonial Philadelphia society and its material culture, presents the definitive interpretation of the John Head account book and introduces many other discoveries. The culmination of nearly 20 years of research, this new volume serves as an essential reference work on 18th-century Philadelphia, its furniture and material culture, as well as an intimate and detailed social history of the interactions among that era’s most talented artisans and successful merchants. Profusely illustrated and in large format, the book includes a foreword from furniture historian Adam Bowett and an introduction by historian Patrick Spero, Librarian and Director of the American Philosophical Society Library" -- Provided by publisher.

Dr. Anthony Chiurco delineates a life in medicine that moves from childhood on the rough streets of south Philadelphia to success in a career that is as stressful as it is profoundly rewarding. He discusses his early programming by the Catholic Church and the eventual dismissal of organized religion and his path to atheism. How life on Earth originated is discussed broadly as well as on the molecular level with a friendly explanation for the reader uneducated in the biological sciences. Whether discussing life in an Italian-American family, or evaluating current topics such as medical malpractice, insurance companies, or government policy, he presents his opinions candidly and without apology. His experiences and preoccupation with sailing and the sport of rowing are discussed with earned pride and affection. Both a celebration and a cautionary tale from a contemporary healer.

Book excerpt: South Philadelphia High School (SPHS) opened in 1907 as the Southern Manual Training School to prepare immigrant boys for work in various trades. The first class graduated in 1910, and the school was later expanded to include girls. In 1955, the original building was replaced by a new structure and became known as South Philadelphia High School. South Philadelphia High School has been called "The School of the Stars" because of the large number of former students who have achieved fame in music, movies, and television. However, this designation represents only a part of the school's significance. Southern's graduates have also achieved distinction in many other fields, such as medicine, law, civil service, military service, athletics, scholarship, writing, and teaching. It is an urban public high school serving a diverse population of immigrant, low-income families. South Philadelphia High School's history is a testimonial to what is possible when educators provide positive guidance and support to their students.
