Book Interpreting Landscapes

Download or read book Interpreting Landscapes written by Christopher Tilley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new approach to writing about the past. Instead of studying the prehistory of Britain from Mesolithic to Iron Age times in terms of periods or artifact classifications, Tilley examines it through the lens of their geology and landscapes, asserting the fundamental significance of the bones of the land in the process of human occupation over the long durée. Granite uplands, rolling chalk downlands, sandstone moorlands, and pebbled hilltops each create their own potentialities and symbolic resources for human settlement and require forms of social engagement. Taking his findings from years of phenomenological fieldwork experiencing different landscapes with all senses and from many angles, Tilley creates a saturated and historically imaginative account of the landscapes of southern England and the people who inhabited them. This work is also a key theoretical statement about the importance of landscapes for human settlement.

Download or read book Making Journeys written by Catriona D. Gibson and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite notable explorations of past dynamics, much of the archaeological literature on mobility remains dominated by accounts of earlier prehistoric gatherer-hunters, or the long-distance exchange of materials. Refinements of scientific dating techniques, isotope, trace element and aDNA analyses, in conjunction with phenomenological investigation, computer-aided landscape modeling and GIS-style approaches to large data sets, allow us to follow the movement of people, animals and objects in the past with greater precision and conviction. One route into exploring mobility in the past may be through exploring the movements and biographies of artifacts. Challenges lie not only in tracing the origins and final destinations of objects but in the less tangible ‘in between’ journeys and the hands they passed through. Biographical approaches to artifacts include the recognition that culture contact and hybridity affect material culture in meaningful ways. Furthermore, discrete and bounded ‘sites’ still dominate archaeological inquiry, leaving the spaces and connectivities between features and settlements unmapped. These are linked to an under-explored middle-spectrum of mobility, a range nestled between everyday movements and one-off ambitious voyages. We wish to explore how these travels involved entangled meshworks of people, animals, objects, knowledge sets and identities. By crossing and re-crossing cultural, contextual and tenurial boundaries, such journeys could create diasporic and novel communities, ideas and materialities.

There has been little analysis and documentation of this widespread phenomenon, especially of the substantial and exciting advances that have taken place in the subject over the last decade. This book rectifies that shortfall, building on the foundations of Low-Temperature Metamorphism by Martin Frey (1987). The editors have invited contributions from an internationally acknowledged team of experts, who have aimed the book at advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in the field. Book Local Organizations and Urban Governance in East and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Local Organizations and Urban Governance in East and Southeast Asia written by Benjamin L. Read and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together enterprising pieces of new research on the many forms of organization in East and Southeast Asia that are sponsored or mandated by government, but engage widespread participation at the grassroots level. Straddling the state-society divide, these organizations play important roles in society and politics, yet remain only dimly understood. This book shines a spotlight on this phenomenon, which speaks to fundamental questions about how such societies choose to organize themselves, how institutions of local governance change over time, and how individuals respond to and make use of the power of the state. The contributors investigate organizations ranging from volunteer-based organizations that partner with government in providing services for homeless children, to state-managed networks of neighborhood- or village-level associations that perform representative as well as administrative functions and seeks to answer a number of questions: When do the "vertical," top-down imperatives of the state stifle "horizontal" solidarities, and when might the two work in harmony? Are useful social and administrative purposes served by this type of fusion? Does it amplify or merely muffle citizens’ voices? What does it tell us about existing accounts of community, social capital, "synergy," "complementarity," "subsidiarity," and related concepts? Representing seven countries: China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Singapore this volume will be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and academics in Asian studies, political science, sociology, anthropology, development, history, nonprofit studies.

Book Colour Identification Guide to the Moths of the British Isles

Download or read book Colour Identification Guide to the Moths of the British Isles written by Bernard Skinner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now re-published with additional and updated text, the third edition of the renowned guide to British macro lepidoptera contains two new plates of additional species plus a further group of colour plates comparing critical species in a new style to aid identification of groups of moths. The last twenty-five years since the publication of the first edition have seen a steady increase in our knowledge of British macro moths, their distribution, history and habits, and this new edition will bring to both the new and experienced student of the group, the latest overview of current status of resident, immigrant and historical records. Since the publication of the second edition very significant changes in behaviour and distribution, perhaps associated with climate change, have made it desirable to update much of the basic text. The author, Bernard Skinner has once again prepared an updated concise text giving the fullest details available in a single volume of the British and Irish moths. Here are new records, new species to Great Britain and Ireland together with historical information. Once again the concept of a clear range of illustrations, both drawings and colour photographs provide the basis for identifying moths. Together with a text that indicates similar species, are drawings that point towards diagnostic features of similar moths. The main block of forty-five colour plates illustrate the size, complete wing patterns and important forms and variation of moths. New additional plates bring together magnified images of various groups of moths, some separated in the main plates, to help compare similar species and aid identification using in some cases underside illustrations where advantageous. This is a major update of the 2nd edition that has been out of print for the last couple of years.

Book From Carnac to Callanish

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aubrey Burl
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 1993-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300055757
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book From Carnac to Callanish written by Aubrey Burl and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the lines of standing stones that until now have been the neglected wonders of prehistoric Europe, rows that were foci of rituals in Britain, Ireland and Brittany for over two thousand years. Places such as Carnac in Brittany and Callanish in the Hebrides are visited by many visitors each year, but before now there has been no book that seriously explains the history, significance and background to these impressive sites. Aubrey Burl shows that the settings vary from pairs of isolated stones in the far south-west of Ireland to networks of long lines in Scotland, Dartmoor and Brittany, and describes the types in a sequence of architectural chapters that stress the increasing social and commercial connections between regions hundred of miles apart. He uses information from a wide variety of sources - excavation reports, megalithic art, astronomical analyses and legends - to provide explanations of why the rows were erected, when, and what they may have been used for.
