Book The State of South Carolina s Forests 2001

Download or read book The State of South Carolina s Forests 2001 written by Roger C. Conner and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land area in South Carolina amounted to 12.4 million acres, including 12.2 million acres of timberland. Nonindustrial-private timberland amounted to 8.9 million acres, a decline of less than 1 percent since 1993. Family forest owners dominate the private ownership group with 357,000 landowners who collectively control 7.1 million acres of forest land in the State. Timberland area under forest industry ownership continued to decline, falling from 2.3 million acres in 1993 to just over 2.0 million acres in 2001. Loblolly pine remains the predominant softwood forest type and occupied 5.0 million acres, up 16 percent since 1993. Planted pine stands amounted to 3.1 million acres and outnumbered stands of natural pine by 150,000 acres. Total volume in all live species amounted to 19.7 billion cubic feet, surpassing all previous inventory estimates. All live softwood volume increased 16 percent to 9.4 billion cubic feet, due primarily to an increase of 1.7 billion cubic feet in loblolly pine volume. Net annual growth for all live softwoods doubled since 1992, averaging 692 million cubic feet per year. Hardwood net growth rose 63 percent and averaged 306 million cubic feet per year since the previous survey. Growth exceeds removals for both species groups, reversing the negative relationship that resulted in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo.

Book Technocrats and the Politics of Drought and Development in Twentieth Century Brazil

Download or read book Technocrats and the Politics of Drought and Development in Twentieth Century Brazil written by Eve E. Buckley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eve E. Buckley’s study of twentieth-century Brazil examines the nation’s hard social realities through the history of science, focusing on the use of technology and engineering as vexed instruments of reform and economic development. Nowhere was the tension between technocratic optimism and entrenched inequality more evident than in the drought-ridden Northeast sertão, plagued by chronic poverty, recurrent famine, and mass migrations. Buckley reveals how the physicians, engineers, agronomists, and mid-level technocrats working for federal agencies to combat drought were pressured by politicians to seek out a technological magic bullet that would both end poverty and obviate the need for land redistribution to redress long-standing injustices.

Book Remote Sensing of Drought

Download or read book Remote Sensing of Drought written by Brian D. Wardlow and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Sensing of Drought: Innovative Monitoring Approaches presents emerging remote sensing-based tools and techniques that can be applied to operational drought monitoring and early warning around the world. The first book to focus on remote sensing and drought monitoring, it brings together a wealth of information that has been scattered throughout the literature and across many disciplines. Featuring contributions by leading scientists, it assembles a cross-section of globally applicable techniques that are currently operational or have potential to be operational in the near future. The book explores a range of applications for monitoring four critical components of the hydrological cycle related to drought: vegetation health, evapotranspiration, soil moisture and groundwater, and precipitation. These applications use remotely sensed optical, thermal, microwave, radar, and gravity data from instruments such as AMSR-E, GOES, GRACE, MERIS, MODIS, and Landsat and implement several advanced modeling and data assimilation techniques. Examples show how to integrate this information into routine drought products. The book also examines the role of satellite remote sensing within traditional drought monitoring, as well as current challenges and future prospects. Improving drought monitoring is becoming increasingly important in addressing a wide range of societal issues, from food security and water scarcity to human health, ecosystem services, and energy production. This unique book surveys innovative remote sensing approaches to provide you with new perspectives on large-area drought monitoring and early warning.

Book Drought and Drought Mitigation in Europe

Download or read book Drought and Drought Mitigation in Europe written by Jürgen V. Vogt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought is one of the major natural hazards, resulting in significant economic, social, and environmental costs. In Europe, water shortage is an important problem in many regions. However, despite the increasing awareness of this hazard, there is no European drought policy and institutional frameworks to cope with drought situations are only weakly developed. This book is dedicated to furthering our understanding of the drought problem in Europe and to discussing policy and management options to mitigate its impacts. It covers aspects from the detection of water stress to the planning of mitigation strategies. The contributions are written by recognised experts in their field and represent a unique collection of papers on the topic. Audience: The book will be of benefit to scientists, managers, and politicians involved in problems related to water management, risk assessment, and spatial planning. Students in Earth Sciences, especially in geography, climatology, hydrology, and agriculture, will find useful material in this collection of papers.

Book Review of the Draft Fourth National Climate Assessment

Download or read book Review of the Draft Fourth National Climate Assessment written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change poses many challenges that affect society and the natural world. With these challenges, however, come opportunities to respond. By taking steps to adapt to and mitigate climate change, the risks to society and the impacts of continued climate change can be lessened. The National Climate Assessment, coordinated by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, is a mandated report intended to inform response decisions. Required to be developed every four years, these reports provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date evaluation of climate change impacts available for the United States, making them a unique and important climate change document. The draft Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4) report reviewed here addresses a wide range of topics of high importance to the United States and society more broadly, extending from human health and community well-being, to the built environment, to businesses and economies, to ecosystems and natural resources. This report evaluates the draft NCA4 to determine if it meets the requirements of the federal mandate, whether it provides accurate information grounded in the scientific literature, and whether it effectively communicates climate science, impacts, and responses for general audiences including the public, decision makers, and other stakeholders.

Book Biodiversity in a Changing Climate

Download or read book Biodiversity in a Changing Climate written by Terry Louise Root and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One major consequence of climate change is abrupt, dramatic changes in regional biodiversity. Even if the most optimistic scenarios for mitigating climate change transpire, the fate of many wild species rests on the shoulders of people engaged in conservation planning, management, and policy. Providing managers with the latest and most useful climate change research is critical and requires challenging the conventional divide between scientists and managers. Biodiversity in a Changing Climate promotes dialogue among scientists, decision makers, and managers who are grappling with climate-related threats to species and ecosystems in diverse forms. The book includes case studies and best practices used to address impacts related to climate change across a broad spectrum of species and habitats—from coastal krill and sea urchins to prairie grass and mountain bumblebees. Focused on California, the issues and strategies presented in this book will prove relevant to regions across the West, as well as other regions, and provide a framework for how scientists and managers in any region can bridge the communication divide to manage biodiversity in a rapidly changing world. Biodiversity and a Changing Climate will prove an indispensable guide to students, scientists, and professionals engaged in conservation and resource management.
