Book South African Botanical Art

Download or read book South African Botanical Art written by John P. Rourke and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through several centuries, the interacting influence of botanical artists and scientists has largely escaped interpretation. Although flower paintings are viewed in galleries and analytical plant drawings are stored in herbaria or museums, artists and scientists have long enriched each other's worlds. In metaphorically 'peeling back the petals', this book explores plant portraiture and the context of its visibility in order to discover the meanings ascribed to different forms of botanical imagery. The authors' texts are enhanced and liberally illustrated by works of some of the countless travellers, botanists and artists who have so passionately and meticulously recorded South Africa's rich floral heritage. Also included is a Concise Dictionary of South African Botanical Artists, the first to be compiled and published, offering a succinct listing with over 250 entries.

Book Irma Stern and the Racial Paradox of South African Modern Art

Download or read book Irma Stern and the Racial Paradox of South African Modern Art written by LaNitra M. Berger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South African artist Irma Stern (1894–1966) is one of the nation's most enigmatic modern figures. Stern held conservative political positions on race even as her subjects openly challenged racism and later the apartheid regime. Using paintings, archival research, and new interviews, this book explores how Stern became South Africa's most prolific painter of Black, Jewish, and Colored (mixed-race) life while maintaining controversial positions on race. Through her art, Stern played a crucial role in both the development of modernism in South Africa and in defining modernism as a global movement. Spanning the Boer War to Nazi Germany to apartheid South Africa and into the contemporary #RhodesMustFall movement, Irma Stern's work documents important twentieth-century cultural and political moments. More than fifty years after her death, Stern's legacy challenges assumptions about race, gender roles, and religious identity and how they are represented in art history.

Book Plants and Their Ways in South Africa

Download or read book Plants and Their Ways in South Africa written by Bertha Stoneman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants and Their Ways in South Africa For several reasons it has seemed desirable to extend the first edition of this book into a second, and in doing so additions have been made, in some cases with considerable reluctance. Not that the first edition was by any means regarded as complete. The book was first written with a view of attracting young eyes to objects of interest in the plant world that could be enjoyed without the use of a compound microscope. In a measure the object was attained, at least sufficiently to show that a microscope was by no means indispensable for students beginning to observe plant life. When contemplating revision, suggestions were asked of young teachers, and some of them seemed to find the lack of a lesson on internal anatomy-one of the disadvantages of the former edition. In order to meet their needs a short lesson on this subject has been added, together with a more extended synopsis of the Natural Orders of South African plants. While these additions appear somewhat as excrescences to the more elementary chapters of the book, the hope is entertained that their usefulness to those for whom they have been written will justify their insertion. It is a pleasure to acknowledge gratefully my indebtedness to those who have aided me in the work of revision. Miss Alette Hugo and Miss Avrylle Bottomley have given valued assistance in pen-and-ink drawings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book South African Flowering Plants For

Download or read book South African Flowering Plants For written by Rev. Professor G. Henslow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South African Flowering Plants For: The Use of Beginners, Students and Teachers The objects of the present book are (1) to enable Beginners in Botany to take some interest in the wild plants of Cape Colony and elsewhere, and to show them how they are to be studied. The number of plants in South Africa is so great that all that can be done is to understand the structure of a certain number only, and the phenomena of their plant life. But to be merely able to distinguish plants by the structure of their flowers, or to know their names, is by no means enough. We require to know, if possible, why their leaves, as well as their flowers, are so different from each other. This leads to the study of their habits in association with their surrounding conditions; and we find that the structures of roots, stems, leaves, etc., are just what is best for the plant, whether it be living in a dry country like South Africa, or in a humid one as England, or entirely in water.
