Book Sources of Bioentrepreneurship

Download or read book Sources of Bioentrepreneurship written by Christian F. Muller and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study starts from the premise that in thebiotechnology sector, entrepreneurial companies have been a major stimulus forthe development of the industry. It focuses on Japan and Germany and theirrecent involvement in the industry of biotechnology, looking at how contextfactors may have impacted sources of bioentrepreneurship. The research is of an exploratory, descriptive nature, and uses secondarydata (industry reports, scientific papers, news reports, and governmentpublications) as well as primary qualitative data (interviews withbioentrepreneurs and industry experts in Germany and Japan). First, the authorsoffer a comprehensive picture of the biotechnology sector; second, an overviewof the biotechnology industry in Japan and Germany is presented, followed by acomparison of the influences of some external factors on sources ofentrepreneurship in these countries. The findings suggest that there are different patterns for the sources ofbiotechnological entrepreneurship in the countries studied. In Germany, mostbiotechnology companies have been formed by individuals from researchinstitutions (universities and public laboratories); in Japan, large companiesplay an important role in the formation of biotechnology companies, being alsoinvolved in an industrial group as research sponsors, investors, or co-sponsorsin many start-ups established by university researchers. Recommendations aremade for future quantitative analyses and other research.(CBS).

Download or read book The Business of Bioscience written by Craig D. Shimasaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My journey into this fascinating field of biotechnology started about 26 years ago at a small biotechnology company in South San Francisco called Genentech. I was very fortunate to work for the company that begat the biotech industry during its formative years. This experience established a solid foundation from which I could grow in both the science and business of biotechnology. After my fourth year of working on Oyster Point Boulevard, a close friend and colleague left Genentech to join a start-up biotechnology company. Later, he approached me to leave and join him in of all places – Oklahoma. He persisted for at least a year before I seriously considered his proposal. After listening to their plans, the opportunity suddenly became more and more intriguing. Finally, I took the plunge and joined this ent- preneurial team in cofounding and growing a start-up biotechnology company. Making that fateful decision to leave the security of a larger company was extremely difficult, but it turned out to be the beginning of an entrepreneurial career that forever changed how I viewed the biotechnology industry. Since that time, I have been fortunate to have cofounded two other biotechnology com- nies and even participated in taking one of them public. During my career in these start-ups, I held a variety of positions, from directing the science, operations, regulatory, and marketing components, to subsequently becoming CEO.

Book Biology Is Technology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert H. Carlson
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2011-04-15
  • ISBN : 0674053621
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Biology Is Technology written by Robert H. Carlson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the current state of biotechnology and the opportunities and dangers it may create.” —American Scientist Technology is a process and a body of knowledge as much as a collection of artifacts. Biology is no different—and we are just beginning to comprehend the challenges inherent in the next stage of biology as a human technology. It is this critical moment, with its wide-ranging implications, that Robert Carlson considers in Biology Is Technology. He offers a uniquely informed perspective on the endeavors that contribute to current progress in this area—the science of biological systems and the technology used to manipulate them. In a number of case studies, Carlson demonstrates that the development of new mathematical, computational, and laboratory tools will facilitate the engineering of biological artifacts—up to and including organisms and ecosystems. Exploring how this will happen, with reference to past technological advances, he explains how objects are constructed virtually, tested using sophisticated mathematical models, and finally constructed in the real world. Such rapid increases in the power, availability, and application of biotechnology raise obvious questions about who gets to use it, and to what end. Carlson’s thoughtful analysis offers rare insight into our choices about how to develop biological technologies and how these choices will determine the pace and effectiveness of innovation as a public good.

Book Business Modeling for Life Science and Biotech Companies

Download or read book Business Modeling for Life Science and Biotech Companies written by Alberto Onetti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on the biotechnology industry focus on scientific and technological challenges, ignoring the entrepreneurial and managerial complexities faced bio-entrepreneurs. The Business Models for Life Science Firms aims to fill this gap by offering managers in this rapid growth industry the tools needed to design and implement an effective business model customized for the unique needs of research intensive organizations. Onetti and Zucchella begin by unpacking the often-used ‘business model’ term, examining key elements of business model conceptualization and offering a three tier approach with a clear separation between the business model and strategy: focus, exploring the different activities carried out by the organization; locus, evaluating where organizational activities are centered; and modus, testing the execution of the organization’s activities. The business model thus defines the unique way in which a company delivers on its promise to its customers. The theory and applications adopt a global approach, offering business cases from a variety of biotech companies around the world.
