Download or read book Foraging Theory Applied to Medical Information Searching written by Mai Dwairy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workload and other constraints prevent General Practitioners from accessing medical evidence for clinical decisions. This problem was studied in New Zealand GPs using Optimal Foraging Theory developed in ecology. GPs' information search strategies were modelled as sequential steps associated with costs and benefits measured from logbooks of actual searches. By consulting the most profitable sources, switching sources when unsuccessful, and double checking, GPs seem close to an optimal trade-off between maximizing search success and information reliability, and minimizing searching time. Subsidised training in information searching and provision of a literature search service are two inferred avenues to access medical evidence.

Download or read book Source Criticism on the Schedule written by Anna Rosenqvist and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is a practical and theoretical teacher guide on how to develop critical thinking and source criticism in contemporary elementary and secondary education, which requires students to develop their critical thinking from different perspectives as well as to develop their ability to critically evaluate sources they use for school-related work. What can a teacher do to support such development? The authors discuss several different perspectives on how one, as a teacher, can think about and work with source criticism together with the students. In the first part of the book a theoretical background and a principled discussion of critical thinking are discussed. This includes psychological and philosophical perspectives on source criticism. In the second part there are concrete teaching examples and tips on how to work with source criticism in both primary and secondary school.

Download or read book Quality Driven Query Answering for Integrated Information Systems written by Felix Naumann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) are becoming more and more important in our highly interconnected world as more and more data and information is made available for online access. Many individuals and governmental, commercial, cultural, and scientific organizations increasingly depend on information sources that can be accessed and queried over the Web. For example, accessing flight schedules or retrieving stock information has become common practice in todays world. When accessing this data, many people assume that the information accessed is accurate and that the data source can be accessed reliably. These two examples clearly demonstrate that not only the information content is important, the information about the quality of the data becomes an even more crucial and critical aspect for individuals and organizations when they make plans or take decisions based on the results of their queries. More precisely, having access to information of known quality becomes critical for the well-being and indeed for the functioning of modern industrialized societies. Surprisingly, despite the urgent need for clear concepts and techniques to judge and value quality and for technology to use such (meta) information, very few scientific results are known and available. Few approaches are known to use quality measures for accessing and querying information over the Web. Only a limited number of products on the IT market address this burning problem.

Download or read book Multiwavelength Approach to Unidentified Gamma Ray Sources written by K.S. Cheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-05-02 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly one half of the point-like gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET instrument of the late Compton satellite are still defeating our attempts at identifying them. To establish the origin and nature of these enigmatic sources has become a major problem of current high-energy astrophysics. The second workshop on Multiwavelength Approach to Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources intends to shed new and fresh light on the problem of the nature of these mysterious sources and the objects behind them. The proceedings contain 46 contributed papers in this subject, which cover theoretical models on gamma-ray sources as well as the best multiwavelength strategies for the identification of the promising candidates. The topics of this conference also include energetic phenomena ocurring both in galactic and extragalactic scenarios, phenomena that might lead to the appearance of what we have called high-energy unidentified sources. The book will be of interest for all active researchers in the high-energy astrophysics and related research areas as well as for scientists and graduate students interested in understanding the recent progress in this field.
