Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Nobel Prize-winning writer and acclaimed author of Snow Country comes a beautiful rendering of the predicament of old age—about an elderly Tokyo businessman who must face the failures of his memory and the sudden upsurges of passion that illuminate the end of a life. “A rich, complicated novel.... Of all modern Japanese fiction, Kawabata’s is the closest to poetry.” —The New York Times Book Review By day Ogata Shingo, an elderly Tokyo businessman, is troubled by small failures of memory. At night he associates the distant rumble he hears from the nearby mountain with the sounds of death. In between are the complex relationships that were once the foundations of Shingo’s life: his trying wife; his philandering son; and his beautiful daughter-in-law, who inspires in him both pity and the stirrings of desire. Out of this translucent web of attachments, Kawabata has crafted a novel that is a powerful, serenely observed meditation on the relentless march of time. Translated from the Japanese by Edward G. Seidensticker

Book excerpt: A Special Prince Is Born Something exciting was happening in the big wildlife animal preserve. You could hear it first in the tumbling of the brooks and the waterfalls, and then in the rustling of tiny feet scurrying here and there throughout the forests and across the meadows. You could also see it in the bright green and yellow colors appearing across the valleys and on the lofty meadows, and then in the soft gold light that was replacing some of the shadows in the vast forests on the mountainsides. Even on most of the mountaintops, against the smooth, brilliant white of the snow, gold, rusty orange, red, and silver gray jagged peaks and bumps were appearing. Across the sky, bright sunlight was peeking through the gray clouds more and more each day, gradually turning the sky to blue and the clouds to white and fluffy. Soon on the meadow, tiny purple, blue, yellow, red, and white flowers were popping up everywhere, right through the melting snow. You could even smell it in the pungent, bittersweet fragrance wafting through the air and feel it like a soft, warm blanket. Signs could be found all over the preserve, indicating that the long winter had ended. It was the beginning of spring. *** Buy the book for the rest of the story.

Book excerpt: This is a story of two detectives Jim Garber and Dick Taylor who investigate a homicide of an entire family in the small mountain community of Pine Heaven in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The story is set in the time frame of the 1960's when there were vast areas of Southern California, that hadn't fallen under the developer's bulldozer and life seemed just a little more laid back, compared with today's hustle and bustle. It is a story of intrigue and human doubts and the avenues that these men travel to try and solve this horrendous crime in this small community. It deals with the emotions of these two Detectives and how these murders play upon their own feelings when confronting possible suspects to this crime and how they handle events that seem to put their reputations in jeopardy. The story goes from the sweltering hear of the valley to the cold and chilling nights in the mountains and all the human faults and failings that go into trying to solve this crime.

  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Songs of Nature written by John Sallis and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest philosophical text by John Sallis is inspired by the work of contemporary Chinese painter Cao Jun. It carries out a series of philosophical reflections on nature, art, and music by taking up Cao Jun's art and thought, with a focus on questions of the elemental. Sallis's reflections are not a matter of simply relating art works to philosophical thought, as theoretical insights and developments run throughout Cao Jun's writings and inform many of his artistic works. Sallis maintains abundant points of contact with Chinese philosophical traditions but also with Western philosophy. In these reflections on art, Sallis poses a critique of mimesis and considers the relation of painting to music. He affirms his conviction that the artist must always turn to nature, especially as reflections on the earth and sky delimit the scale and place of what is human. Full-color illustrations enhance this provocative and penetrating text.

Book Music in the Mountains

Download or read book Music in the Mountains written by Kara Rogers Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the role traditional music plays in shaping and solidifying concepts of regional identity in Western North Carolina. The genres of traditional American music encompassed by this study include Ballads, Old-Time Music, and Bluegrass. Despite the ubiquity of these traditions across the national landscape, all three genres are recognized, both within and beyond the Southeast, as being representative of a Southern Appalachian ethos. This work investigates the causes for such deep associations between music and place. Four years of fieldwork and observation, including the author's active participation with the region's Folk Heritage Committee, which hosts traditional music events through the summer months, provides this study's methodological framework. In brief, this work examines the multiple traditional music communities in Asheville, North Carolina, and the surrounding area, provides biographical sketches of a small sampling of area musicians, and shows how individual musicians and distinctive traditional music communities merge at area festivals to reify concepts of regionalism. It finds that the designation of Ballads, Old-Time Music, and Bluegrass Music as Southern Appalachian regional music is both constructed and affirmed by the interplay between outsiders' and insiders' conceptualizations of regional identity.

Book From the Secret Nook to the Mountain Log House

Download or read book From the Secret Nook to the Mountain Log House written by Dorothy Murray and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergeant Kenkorry thought he’d found the perfect hideout in a secret log house in the dark wilderness of Deadman’s Mountain. He’d been sought for atrocities against his fellow sergeants and many innocent civilians in his war-torn country of Korenith. The sergeant, a fugitive and the subject of a worldwide manhunt, had remained in his mountain hideout until justice found him. A mysterious incident in the dead of night brought an end to the fugitive and his wife. His daughter escaped to the nearby town, while his son, Christopher, remained as a sole mountain derelict. The end had justified the means when Christopher viciously kidnapped Savanna on the eve of her wedding. While Savanna tried to come to grips with her kidnapping, particularly her missed wedding, she’d striven to assume motherly responsibilities in the log house. It wasn’t long before love and romance sparked between her and her kidnapper. Meanwhile, the true identity of her kidnapper’s father—the alleged, Hornett Brentkham, and his family—was unraveled when secret documents were uncovered in the log house. The hopes and dreams of the inseparable young folk to live their lives of love and romance in the log house sanctuary, however, ended when Christopher was recaptured and returned to prison. With the mystery of the fugitive, Sergeant Kenkorry, now unraveled and Savanna released from her kidnapper, her love had become wedged between her kidnapper and Harry, her future husband and a son of noble and wealthy heritage. The questions therefore lingered. Will Savanna resume her wedding plans and wed Harry? Will she wait in earnest hope for Christopher, a convicted murderer, a kidnapper on his way back to prison, where he will serve twenty years with no chance of parole, an avid sleepwalker who’s prone to commit vicious crimes in his sleep? Harry’s struggles to clear her twisted mind with hopes that their wedding can proceed have just begun.

Book The Bear Went Over the Mountain

Download or read book The Bear Went Over the Mountain written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bear went over the mountain, to see what he could see, hear what he could hear, smell what he could smell, touch what he could touch, and taste what he could taste; what a busy bear! In this beautifully written rendition of a classic children’s song, bestselling author and illustrator Iza Trapani brings to life the seasonal activities of this cuddly bear. The bear sets out at the beginning of spring and finds fun around every corner, such as watching bunnies hop and smelling flowers. When the bear finds something unpleasant, like a smelly skunk or a prickly porcupine, he learns that the five senses have both good and bad traits. But that is all right, because there is always something just as exciting to try next! As winter arrives, the bear goes home to his cave, tired after his adventures. The Bear Went Over the Mountain, in paperback for the first time, teaches children about the five senses and the four seasons, all through a timeless song. It is so much fun, kids will want to go exploring too, just like the bear! Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
