Book Saving Souls Serving Society

Download or read book Saving Souls Serving Society written by Heidi Rolland Unruh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen unprecedented attention to faith-based institutions as agents of social change, spurred in part by cuts in public funding for social services and accompanied by controversy about the separation of church and state. The debate over faith-based initiatives has highlighted a small but growing segment of churches committed to both saving souls and serving society. What distinguishes faith-based from secular activism? How do religious organizations express their religious identity in the context of social services? How do faith-based service providers interpret the connection between spiritual methodologies and socioeconomic outcomes? How does faith motivate and give meaning to social ministry? Drawing on case studies of fifteen Philadelphia-area Protestant churches with active outreach, Saving Souls, Serving Society seeks to answer these and other pressing questions surrounding the religious dynamics of social ministry. While church-based programs often look similar to secular ones in terms of goods or services rendered, they may show significant differences in terms of motivations, desired outcomes, and interpretations of meaning. Church-based programs also differ from one another in terms of how they relate evangelism to their social outreach agenda. Heidi Rolland Unruh and Ronald J. Sider explore how churches navigate the tension between their spiritual mission and the constraints on evangelism in the context of social services. The authors examine the potential contribution of religious dynamics to social outcomes as well as the relationship between mission orientations and social capital. Unruh and Sider introduce a new vocabulary for describing the religious components and spiritual meanings embedded in social action, and provide a typology of faith-based organizations and programs. Their analysis yields a framework for Protestant mission orientations that makes room for the diverse ways that churches interrelate spiritual witness and social compassion. Based on their observations, the authors offer a constructive approach to church-state partnerships and provide a far more objective understanding of faith-based social services than previously available.

Book Arts Therapies Communication European Arts Therapy

Download or read book Arts Therapies Communication European Arts Therapy written by Line Kossolapow and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stipulation of a present actual position of Art Therapy, however, inevitably leads to further thoughts about ongoing development. Everything required for the theoretical-practical founding of a European Art Therapy, as discipline still has to be done, including construction of a communicative bridge to partners in other continents or countries. This development work has two strands of development. One follows a more theoretical direction with European Art Therapy as a research and teaching subject as an objective in view. The other is directed more towards practical fieldwork, which, in turn, can lead to the establishment of funds of experience as well as quantitative and qualitative investigations and thus to theoretical-methodical statements. In the contributions on hand both connections pervade. Naturally the individual articles in this collection do not fully expound the volume of art therapeutic work throughout Europe but they are a source of information and inspiration for the user from theory and / or practice, who can then find his particular niche with his own specific interests within the cross-section and subsequently continue the discourse spatially and objectively.

Book It Is Our Nature to Love and Nature Is Our Inspiration

Download or read book It Is Our Nature to Love and Nature Is Our Inspiration written by P F Bulmer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some readers may ask, why is a book of poems called a book of lyrics and songs, or vice versa? This may be because the word, poem, can be misused, and may be the most misused word in the English language, and leads one to be very cautious about using it. More recently the word poem, seems to have included pretty well any thing. What makes a good poem, who really knows? But it does seem have to be a little more than well-written prose. The Oxford dictionary describes a poem, as a piece of imaginative writing in verse and poetry as a quality of beauty or emotional power, poetry and fire, balanced in music. At what stage do songs and lyrics become poetry is not very clear but the connection is clearly very close.

Download or read book Art After Instagram written by Lachlan MacDowall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the effects of the Instagram platform on the making and viewing of art. Authors Lachlan MacDowall and Kylie Budge critically analyse the ways Instagram has influenced artists, art spaces, art institutions and art audiences, and ultimately contemporary aesthetic experience. The book argues that more than simply being a container for digital photography, the architecture of Instagram represents a new relationship to the image and to visual experience, a way of shaping ocular habits and social relations. Following a detailed analysis of the structure of Instagram – the tactile world of affiliation (‘follows’), aesthetics (‘likes’) and attention (‘comments’) – the book examines how art spaces, audiences and aesthetics are key to understanding its rise. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, design, digital culture, cultural studies, sociology, education, business, media and communication studies.
