Download or read book Black Joy written by Tracey M. Lewis-Giggetts and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely collection of deeply personal, uplifting, and powerful essays that celebrate the redemptive strength of Black joy--in the vein of Black Girls Rock, You Are Your Best Thing, and I Really Needed This Today. When Tracey M. Lewis-Giggetts wrote an essay on Black joy for The Washington Post, she had no idea just how deeply it would resonate. But the outpouring of responses affirmed her own lived experience: that Black joy is not just a weapon of resistance, it is a tool for resilience. With this book, Tracey aims to gift her community with a collection of lyrical essays about the way joy has evolved, even in the midst of trauma, in her own life. Detailing these instances of joy in the context of Black culture allows us to recognize the power of Black joy as a resource to draw upon, and to challenge the one-note narratives of Black life as solely comprised of trauma and hardship. Black Joy is a collection that will recharge you. It is the kind of book that is passed between friends and offers both challenge and comfort at the end of a long day. It is an answer for anyone who needs confirmation that they are not alone and a brave place to quiet their mind and heal their soul.

Download or read book Dance Dance Dance written by Haruki Murakami and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-11-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dance Dance Dance—a follow-up to A Wild Sheep Chase—is a tense, poignant, and often hilarious ride through Murakami’s Japan, a place where everything that is not up for sale is up for grabs. As Murakami’s nameless protagonist searches for a mysteriously vanished girlfriend, he is plunged into a wind tunnel of sexual violence and metaphysical dread. In this propulsive novel, featuring a shabby but oracular Sheep Man, one of the most idiosyncratically brilliant writers at work today fuses together science fiction, the hardboiled thriller, and white-hot satire.

Download or read book TO BREAK EVERY YOKE written by Ms. J. E. Franklin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four works presented in this book are about freedom: breaking free, staying free, and helping others to freedom. A college student travels south to do her part in making Dr. King's dream of freedom for everyone a reality; a mother struggles for over two decades to free her blind son from bondage; a white man finds himself entrapped in the racial laws of the nation's One-Drop Theory; a high school drop-out tries to break free from negative family forces to pursue her dream of being a dancer. The familiar characters may make you laugh, but they may also make you cry; the questions raised may provoke, but they may also stir your imaginations and challenge long-held views. Hopefully, they will leave all of us with a broader understanding of our predicament and of ways in which we may address it.

Consumed with being a celebrity, her inner beauty has been replaced by an ugly lust for fame. When our coach offers me $5,000 a week to appear on TV’s hot ballroom dance reality show, I have no desire to relive my painful past with Selena, but I made a promise to my buddy that I’d take care of his wife and kids if he died on the battlefield. One season, ten weeks, a small sacrifice to make for the man who saved my life. Hand me my dance shoes. I’m in. (A version of this book was originally published as Love Waltzes In and Swing.
