Book Sonoran Strongman

Download or read book Sonoran Strongman written by Rodolfo Acuña and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonoran Strongman provides an in-depth look at a turbulent period in Mexico's history. During this era, Sonora was plagued with domestic unrest and threatened by foreign invasion. The state's citizens, hoping Ignacio Pesqueira would be the "man of action" capable of restoring order, elected him governor by an overwhelming vote. He became a virtual dictator and ruled Sonora from 1856–1876. Pesqueira was the product of troubled times, and the times shaped his destiny. Author Acuña presents an authoritative account of the "Strongman's" rise to power and vividly portrays the suffering of northern Mexico's people.

Book Lizard Tales

Download or read book Lizard Tales written by Bayard H. Brattstrom and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Lizard Tales, People and Events in the Life of a Naturalist” consists of stories that I told in my ecology, evolution, ornithology, herpetology, natural history, and general biology classes or around campfires, and includes many that have never been told to anyone until now. The book is autobiographical and geographic: Chicago, Hollywood, San Diego, UCLA, Cal. Tech., New York, Arizona and also Australia, Mexico, and Central America. The stories are about animals, fieldwork, people, and weird or exciting events. Because I have met and interacted with many people, there are personal stories about Debbie Reynolds, Natalie Wood, John Steinbeck, Margaret Meade, Cellist Gregory Piatagorsky, Charles Richter (Earthquake Scale), U.S. Grant IV, The Emperor of Japan, and artist Charles Russell! Some of the fun stories include: Playing badminton with the world’s champion, Cobras getting loose at UCLA, Nobel Laureates in my class, How I invented the stent, Origin of the first elephant race in human history, Why salamanders helped Custer lose the Battle of Little Big Horn, The girl that peed with rattlesnakes, Sliding off the side of a whale, Drinking beer with the Emperor of Japan, Can lizards predict earthquakes, Three gringos and a dead horse (Costa Rica), and Attempted murder using a rattlesnake.

Book The Tropical Deciduous Forest of Alamos

Download or read book The Tropical Deciduous Forest of Alamos written by Robert H. Robichaux and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a day's drive south of the U.S.-Mexico border, a tropical deciduous forest opens up a world of exotic trees and birds that most people associate with tropical forests of more southerly latitudes. Like many such forests around the world, this diverse ecosystem is highly threatened, especially by large-scale agricultural interests that are razing it in order to plant grass for cattle. This book introduces the tropical deciduous forest of the Alamos region of Sonora, describing its biodiversity and the current threats to its existence. The book's contributors present the most up-to-date scientific knowledge of this threatened ecosystem. They review the natural history and ecology of its flora and fauna and explore how native peoples use the forest's many resources. Included in the book's coverage is a comprehensive plant list for the Río Cuchujaqui area that well illustrates the diversity of the forest. Other contributions examine tree species used by Mayo Indians and the numerous varieties of domesticated plants that have been developed over the centuries by the Mayos and other indigenous peoples. Also examined are the diversity and distribution of reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds in the region. The Tropical Deciduous Forest of Alamos provides critical information about a globally important biome. It complements other studies of similar forests and allows a better understanding of a diverse but vanishing ecosystem.

Book Gentry s Rio Mayo Plants

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul S. Martin
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2021-11-30
  • ISBN : 0816547459
  • Pages : 576 pages

Download or read book Gentry s Rio Mayo Plants written by Paul S. Martin and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Río Mayo region of northwestern Mexico is a major geographic area whose natural history remains poorly known to outsiders. Lying in a region where desert and tropical, northern and southern, and continental and coastal species converge, it boasts an abundance of flora first documented by Howard Scott Gentry in 1942 in a book now widely regarded as a classic of botanical literature. This new book updates and amends Gentry's Río Mayo Plants. Undertaken with Gentry's support and participation before his death in 1993, it reproduces the original text, which appears here with annotations, and contains information on over 2,800 taxa—more than twice the 1,200 species first described by Gentry. The annotated list of plants includes information on distribution, habitat, appearance, common names, and indigenous uses. A new introduction provides historical background and a review of geography and vegetation. It also describes changes to the land and river wrought by agricultural development, expanded grazing, and lumbering. Throughout the text, the authors have endeavored to provide information on Río Mayo vegetation while emphasizing local knowledge and use of plants, to preserve Gentry's field-oriented focus, and to present botanical information with Gentry's exuberance and style. Río Mayo Plants has long stood as a book that displays a scientist's love of the English language, his fondness for native peoples, and his eye for beauty in nature. This updating of that work fills a gap in the botanical literature of this portion of North America and will be useful not only for botanists but also for biogeographers, taxonomists, land managers, and conservationists.

Book The Missions of Northern Sonora

Download or read book The Missions of Northern Sonora written by Buford Pickens and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1993-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish missions founded by Padre Eusebio Kino in Sonora, Mexico, during the 1690s and early 1700s are historical as well as architectural marvels. Once self-supporting villages with central churches, the missions stand today as monuments to perseverance in the face of a hostile New World. These "Kino Missions" were surveyed in 1935 by the National Park Service to prepare for the restoration of the mission at Tumacacori, Arizona, then a National Historic Monument. That report, which was never published, provided insights into the missions' history and architecture that remain of lasting relevance. Perhaps more important, it documented these structures in photographs and drawings—the latter including floor plans and sketches of architectural detail—that today are of historic as well as aesthetic interest. This volume reproduces that 1935 report in its entirety, focusing on sixteen missions and including two maps, 52 drawings, and 76 photographs. With a new introduction and appendixes that place the original study in context, The Missions of Northern Sonora is an invaluable reference for scholars and mission visitors alike.
