Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the First International Conference on Composite Structures held at Paisley College of Technology, Paisley, Scotland, in September 1981. This conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology in association with The Institution of Mechanical Engineers and The National Engineering Laboratory (UK). There can be little doubt that, within engineering circles, the use of composite materials has revolutionised traditional design concepts. The ability to tailor-make a material to suit prevailing environmental conditions whilst maintaining adequate reinforcement to withstand applied loading is unquestionably an attractive proposition. Significant weight savings can also be achieved by virtue of the high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight characteristics of, for example, fibrous forms of composite materials. Such savings are clearly of paramount importance in transportation engineering and in particular aircraft and aerospace applications. Along with this considerable structural potential the engineer must accept an increased complexity of analysis. All too often in the past this has dissuaded the designer from considering composite materials as a viable, or indeed better, alternative to traditional engineering materials. Inherent prejudices within the engineering profession have also contributed, in no small way, to a certain wariness in appreciating the merits of composites. However, the potential benefits of composite materials are inescapable. The last two decades have seen a phenomenal increase in the use of composites in virtually every area of engineering, from the high technology v vi Preface aerospace application to the less demanding structural cladding situation.

Book Large Amplitude Response of Complex Structures Due to High Intensity Noise

Download or read book Large Amplitude Response of Complex Structures Due to High Intensity Noise written by Chuh Mei and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A problem of interest to the Air Force is the design of acoustically sound aircraft structural components. This is because sonic fatigue failures have resulted in unacceptable maintenance and inspection burdens associated with the operation of the aircraft. In some instances, sonic fatigue failures have resulted in major redesign efforts of structural components. Currently, the sonic fatigue design methods are based upon a combination of experimental and analytical techniques. The analytical methods are based on the linear or small deflection theory (Sonic Fatigue Design Guide for Military Aircraft, AFFDL-TR- 74-112, for example). But, on the contrary, the test structural panels respond nonlinearly with large deflections at high intensity acoustic pressure levels. This large amplitude geometrical nonlinearity is the major factor that causes disagreement between the computed and the measured random responses. To improve the analytical design methods, large deflection or nonlinear structure theory must be employed in the analysis. This report presents a review of existing analytical and numerical methods on random excitation on nonlinear multi-degree- of-freedom systems, and an evaluation of these methods based on some realistic considerations from the point of view of their application to complex panel configurations of aircraft structure.

Book Evaluation of Several Bonding Parameters on the Random Bending Fatigue Life of Adhesively Bonded Aluminum Joints

Download or read book Evaluation of Several Bonding Parameters on the Random Bending Fatigue Life of Adhesively Bonded Aluminum Joints written by Howard F. Wolfe and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteen adhesively bonded aluminum coupons were tested on a vibration shaker at room temperature to determine the effects of varying the adhesive type/thickness, primer and adherend surface preparation on their random bending fatigue life. Most of the fatigue failures occurred within one million to one billion cycles, all at 900 microstrain. While neither the primer thickness nor the surface treatment seemed to influence the overall results, the coupons with thicker adhesive had a noticeable shorter fatigue life. Fractographic analyses of the failed adhesive surfaces showed the locus of fracture for all coupons was predominantly within the adhesive. The nitrile phenolic adhesive demonstrated a better fatigue resistance than the nitrile epoxy.

Book Predicted and Measured Strain Responses of Isotropic Panels to Base Excitation

Download or read book Predicted and Measured Strain Responses of Isotropic Panels to Base Excitation written by Karen H. Lyle and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research described is to assess the accuracy of classical linear theory fro predicting acceleration and strain for cantilevered and clamped free-clamped free (C-F-C-F) panels excited through the base. Aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium panels of various dimensions and thicknesses were vibration tested by using a broadband random signal applied through a shaker mounting fixture. The strains were measured at nine locations on each cantilevered panel and at five locations on each C-F-C-F panel. Accelerations were measured on the base and at one panel location for both the cantilevered and the C-F-C-F panels. Predictions were based on the Ritz method with assumed beam functions. The measured accelerations of the base and modal damping values were input to the analysis. Measured and predicted modal frequencies agree to within 4 percent. Comparisons between predicted and measured strain and acceleration spectra were within an average error of 20 percent for both the cantilevered and the C-F-C-F panels. (mjm).
