Book War Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book War Songs Classic Reprint written by Christopher Stone and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Songs As the Valkyrie ride exultant up northern skies to Valhalla, bearing fallen heroes home, spurning fear, pain, and death beneath the hoof-strokes of their galloping horses, the President of the Peace Conference reclines in his opera-box - and yawns. The triumphant rush through the air; the clash of sword and hollow reverberating clang of brazen buckler, the storm and wild joy of battle are in his ears - but he hears not. The sounds are not for him, nor are the shadows that take form and gather fast to the summons of that wild music. Not for him is the phantasmagoria of spectral squadrons wheeling and charging with flashing sabres and fluttering red lunghis across the stony plain until they plunge headlong into that cloud of dust and smoke which closes like a curtain behind them. Not for him does the forlorn hope crouch behind the rocky outcrop of the hill, they and their boyish leader with the haunting eyes. Upon their stern faces the cold grey light of early dawn grows momentarily stronger - now, by Heaven, is the time! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music After the Great War: And Other Studies Szymanowski of Poland (if he is still alive) or a new César Franck in Belgium who will rise to write of the intensity of suffering through which his country has struggled. But it seems to me beyond a doubt that music after the great war will be newer (i mean, of course, more primitive) than it was in the last days of July, 1914. There will be plenty of disharmonies, foreshadowed by Schoen berg and Strawinsky, let loose on our ears, but, in spite of the protests of Mr. Runciman, I submit that these disharmonies are a steady progression from Wagner, and not a freakish whim of an ah normal devil. I do not predict a return to Mozart as one result of the war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Love and War You wonder, my friend, why so seldom I print The fanciful thoughts which I weave into verse; You flatter my Muse by your delicate hint Of fame in the future, of gold in my purse You ask why I write, if but few are to read; Yo'u talk of the wasting of talent and time; I covet not fame, am accustomed to need, And men do not Offer their riches for rhyme. Consider the lark! How he rises on wing, And mounts to the sky through ethereal air! He sings as he soars; 'tis his nature to sing To warble his notes though no listener be near I seek not for fortune, I sigh not for fame, I follow my Muse into forest, or street; In sorrow, in gladness, I sing all the same, I sing because singing itself is so sweet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Songs of the Germans: With Historical Illustrations of the Liberation War and the Rhine Boundary Question Ments of a work on the Liberation War, for which I had collected large materials, at a time when Provi dence had not yet marked out for me a less genial, but more useful sphere of action. Fragmentary as they are, however, I am confident they will not be found superficial; and I trust also they may prove such as not to be altogether unworthy of a kindly approval from a man who, more, perhaps, than any one now living, knows what honest work means. May you long continue to hold forth in your life and writings, to all English-speaking men, a noble example of that manly independence, lofty fervour, and un bribed truthfulness, without which the greatest lite rary successes are mere painted flowers, and the honours which vulgar ambition covets a dress which smothers the frame that it should adorn. Book Contingent Ditties and Other Soldier Songs of the Great War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Contingent Ditties and Other Soldier Songs of the Great War Classic Reprint written by Frank S. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contingent Ditties, and Other Soldier Songs of the Great War In January last of the present year Sergeant Frank Brown called at my office in Covent Garden with a packet of poems under his arm. His name was not unknown to me, owing to the fact that he had submitted some of his work to the literary critic of the above paper, who had in turn drawn my attention to it. Brown had come to England with the first Canadian Contingent, holding the position of Sergeant in the Third Company of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. At the time of our correspondence his regiment had proceeded to France, but the soldier-poet, much to his disgust, had been left behind, temporarily unfit through an influenza attack. His first letters to me were written from Lark Hill Hospital, Salisbury Plain. Fair, slight but sturdy, keen-eyed, self-con fident but unassuming; such is my impression of the young soldier who came into my room on that grey January morning. He was the type of the British soldier: healthy, cheerful, untroubled by mental subtlety or overweening ambition, but willing to square brain and brawn with the general effort towards the attainment of an end known to be righteous and certain. All this was evident from the external view, but the intimacy of conversation revealed exceptional characteristics. It was evident that Sergeant Brown resembled the admirable average type of British soldier only by an effort of the will, born, probably, of an equally British and equally admirable objection to being thought remark able.
