Book Slave Songs of the United States

Download or read book Slave Songs of the United States written by William Francis Allen and published by Applewood Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1867, this book is a collection of songs of African-American slaves. A few of the songs were written after the emancipation, but all were inspired by slavery. The wild, sad strains tell, as the sufferers themselves could, of crushed hopes, keen sorrow, and a dull, daily misery, which covered them as hopelessly as the fog from the rice swamps. On the other hand, the words breathe a trusting faith in the life after, to which their eyes seem constantly turned.

Book Songs From the Sunny South Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs From the Sunny South Classic Reprint written by John Cameron Grant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs From the Sunny South I have often wondered where Poems were written in the Cloister, in the Study, or under the high blue dome of Heaven! For mine I can answer - on hill and high land, in deep jungle and on wide Patna, by river and Tank and Temple, by the sea, upon the shore, and when the storm winds were sweeping the mountains, and the thunder bufi'eting the peaks that have stood the same buffets since the world was young. If what I have written breathes not of the places in which it came to birth, it is no fault of omission but greatly one of com mission, that I should be such ablock as to feel and feed upon the fair, the terrible, the gentle and the strong, and all the forces of things that are and yet to speak but as a soulless brazen bell, still having the conceit to ring out my discordant notes upon a single fellow-creature. Nay, I hope I have a little at least of my sorrow, my sympathy, my worship for the all-mother inset upon these pages. I believe I have or I would never have thought of letting others view them. Contemporary Poetry! Ah me, contemporary with the month of issue only or with all years! One should not, does not, cannot write with thought such as this in mind, but now as I am about to part with so many secrets, the wonder will not but rise, is there ought worthy to live in so much that is scarce worthy the boon of peaceful Death? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Song Book: A Complete Collection of the Folk-Songs, Carols, and Rounds, Suggested by the Board of Education (1905); Edited and Arranged for the Use of Schools This collection contains all the songs recommended for older children by the Board of Education in their Blue Book of Suggestions see Appendix VI., p. 131. The accompaniments are of the simplest character, and are merely intended to suggest sufficient harmony to make clear the tonality of each song, and in some cases to reinforce the characteristic rhythm, Without distracting the attention of the singers from the melody itself. English children may at first experience some difficulty in grasping the peculiar scales and intervals of Keltic tunes; but What Scotch, Welsh, and Irish children can sing naturally, English children can acquire, and the trouble involved will be amply repaid by the widening of their musical horizon, and by the more deeply poetical influence which Keltic music will exert upon the young mind. Book Songs of the Cumberlands

Download or read book Songs of the Cumberlands written by Robert P. Hudson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Cumberlands: A Series of Poems Descriptive of Scenes and Incidents Among the Cumberlands and Throughout the South The Cumberlands, reaching through Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Georgia, have lately been justly celebrated in the stories of various prose writers, but never before have they appeared in song. It is hoped that this little volume is not misplaced in attempting to fill the vacancy thus existing. The author wishes to say that these songs were not written with a view to publication, but were addressed to friends as his experiences in life. He has not made poesy a business, but a pastime. It is only after the toils of the field that he has had time to attend the flowers of his litle garden.; Whether, in his attempts on Parnassus, he has reached the court of Erato, the reader must say.
