Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A French Song Companion is an indispensable guide to the modern repertoire and the most comprehensive book of French melodie in any language. Noted accompanist Graham Johnson provides repertoire guides to the work of over 150 composers--the majority of them from France but including British, American, German, Spanish, and Italian musicians who have written French vocal music. The book contains major articles on Faure, Duparc, Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc, as well as essays on Bizet, Chabrier, Gounod, Chausson, Hahn, and Satie, and important reassessments of such composers as Massenet, Koechlin, and Leguerney. The book combines these articles with the complete texts in English of over 700 songs, all translated by Richard Stokes, making it also a treasury of French poetry from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. The translations alone will prove invaluable to music lovers and performers; combined with the biographical articles, they become the ideal map for exploring this exciting and diverse repertoire.

  • Author : Larry Portis
  • Publisher : Virtualbookworm Publishing
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9781589395473
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book French Frenzies written by Larry Portis and published by Virtualbookworm Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "French Frenzies" is a lively history of French popular music that responds to a real need: how to understand the cultural differences between France and the English speaking countries of Britain and North America? The book is unique in showing how French forms of cultural expression are rooted in social and political tensions that, although shared by other countries, are not generally commented upon in songs with the same degree of clarity. In France, the persistence of strong literary and political traditions continues to nurture an exceptional current of criticism in songs and musical expression.

Book The Powers of Sound and Song in Early Modern Paris

Download or read book The Powers of Sound and Song in Early Modern Paris written by Nicholas Hammond and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long and spectacular reign of Louis XIV of France is typically described in overwhelmingly visual terms. In this book, Nicholas Hammond takes a sonic approach to this remarkable age, opening our ears to the myriad ways in which sound revealed the complex acoustic dimensions of class, politics, and sexuality in seventeenth-century Paris. The discovery in the French archives of a four-line song from 1661 launched Hammond’s research into the lives of the two men referenced therein—Jacques Chausson and Guillaume de Guitaut. In retracing the lives of these two men (one sentenced to death by burning and the other appointed to the Ordre du Saint-Esprit), Hammond makes astonishing discoveries about each man and the ways in which their lives intersected, all in the context of the sounds and songs heard in the court of Louis XIV and on the streets and bridges of Paris. Hammond’s study shows how members of the elite and lower classes in Paris crossed paths in unexpected ways and, moreover, how noise in the ancien régime was central to questions of crime and punishment: street singing was considered a crime in itself, and yet street singers flourished, circulating information about crimes that others may have committed, while political and religious authorities wielded the powerful sounds of sermons and public executions to provide moral commentaries, to control crime, and to inflict punishment. This innovative study explores the theoretical, social, cultural, and historical contexts of the early modern Parisian soundscape. It will appeal to scholars interested in sound studies and the history of sexuality as well as those who study the culture, literature, and history of early modern France.

Book Music Discipline and Arms in Early Modern France

Download or read book Music Discipline and Arms in Early Modern France written by Kate van Orden and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking new study, Kate van Orden examines noble education in the arts to show how music contributed to cultural and social transformation in early modern French society. She constructs a fresh account of music's importance in promoting the absolutism that the French monarchy would fully embrace under Louis XIV, uncovering many hitherto unpublished ballets and royal ceremonial performances. The great pressure on French noblemen to take up the life of the warrior gave rise to bellicose art forms such as sword dances and equestrian ballets. Far from being construed as effeminizing, such combinations of music and the martial arts were at once refined and masculine-a perfect way to display military prowess. The incursion of music into riding schools and infantry drills contributed materially to disciplinary order, enabling the larger and more effective armies of the seventeenth century. This book is a history of the development of these musical spheres and how they brought forth new cultural priorities of civility, military discipline, and political harmony. Music, Discipline, and Arms in Early Modern France effectively illustrates the seminal role music played in mediating between the cultural spheres of letters and arms.
