Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earth, Sky and Air in Song His series of books is presented in the hope of aiding the youth of T our country to form the habit of observation of Nature, than which there is no greater power for education. The series consists of two volumes, Book One and Book Two. It is recommended that they be taken up in the order indicated, though each book is independent of the other. It has been my endeavor in writing the words of these songs to use the child's language, and to recognize the child's sense of humor, which seems to me of great importance. In the music I have tried to adhere naturally to the elocutionary expression of the text. It is impossible to give satisfactory directions as to the manner in which songs are to be sung; but if teachers and others who may use these books will bear in mind the above fact and allow the children to sing the words as they would read them, taking all the liberties necessary for the elocutionary expression of the text, the best results will, I am sure, be obtained. Book Children of Earth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Children of Earth Classic Reprint written by Darrell Figgis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Earth There was an infinity of music in the roaring that filled the night. The texture of sound was as complicated in its intimacies as it was terrifying in its vastness. It was both organ-like and organic. While the congregated sons of power sang each his note to the buffets of wind that tore at their sides, swept upon them, above them, and around them so each blade of bog-grass, each blade of swaying heather, each bulk of sodden moss, each stream that rushed to the valley, each pool of bog-water, each hummock had its individual voice. It was yet the voice of open spaces. There was a surge and sway, a vast impetus of freedom, in that music to declare that neither bush nor tree in that inky dark ness intercepted the course of the wind with an alien cry. The sound was all of movement. Nowhere did it rest in its movement. Freedom, distance, space and speed were the indissoluble constituents of that hymning of Earth, even when it was most complicated in its texture. Its very fury had a gesture of gauntness. Its very frenzy was severe and stern. Through a darkness that crushed the brain came the sense of wide space and unstaying speed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dearest Spot on Earth Home, Sweet Home How did the world live without it so long What immeasurable solace and sweetness it has added to life during these last seventy-five years! Looked at from this distance, Clari, or the Maid of Milan, of which the song was a part, was a divinely inspired opera. Home, Sweet Home is a language of itself. It is a kind of Esperanto of the soul in which men, strangers to each other, may unite in common worship, he of the cottage and he of the palace, each kneeling at the shrine set up in his own hallowed memory. It is one of those songs that help to make democracy. Its passion is a common one, recogniz ing neither border, nor breed, nor birth. Let our country sing it more and more!
