Book excerpt: This book is a collection of original research papers given at a symposium entitled "Sensory Systems and Behavior of Aquatic Mammals", hosted by the USSR Academy of Sciences. The meeting was held in Moscow from 16 to 25 October, 1991 and involved nearly 100 scientists from around the world. The major headings of the book correspond to the session topics at the symposium. This meeting was not the first dedicated to problems of sensory systems in aquatic mammals. Experts in this field met several times previously to discuss important problems of sensory functions in echolocating animals. symposia on biosonar systems were held in Frascati, Italy in 1966, then in Jersey, France in 1978, and in Helsingor, Denmark in 1986. Papers presented at these meetings were pUblished in books that advanced significantly the understanding of sensory systems (Busnel and Fish, 1980; Nachtigall and Moore, 1988). Initially, echolocating bats were the main subjects of consideration. However, studies on echolocating aquatic mammals, whales and dolphins, increased from one meeting to the next. Indeed, aquatic mammals are of exceptional interest for studying the adaptation of sensory functions for echolocation in specific aquatic environments. As a natural consequence of these developments, the 1989 symposium in Rome was devoted specifically to the sensory systems of cetaceans (Thomas and Kastelein, 1990). This symposium was held within the Fifth International Theriological Congress and was attended by many scientists.

Swimming and diving habits were observed and photographed, and underwater sounds produced by the whales were recorded. Information concerning the range of variation in physical appearance was sufficient to improve the quality of current visual identification aids. Book excerpt: Marine passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a valuable tool to assess the distribution, habitat use, and behaviour of marine mammals including the acoustically prolific humpback whale. With increasing amounts of data collected, the challenge of effectively mining PAM data for signals of interest and interpreting those signals is faced by researchers globally. I completed a literature review on the data analysis methods employed in PAM baleen whale studies (2000-2019) before exploring the dynamic and complex humpback repertoire, which is particularly challenging for PAM. The review revealed a spectrum of methodologies ranging from full manual data analysis by a human to fully automated techniques. I propose recommendations for future work to encourage the application of best practices that will result in more robust and comparable research. Humpback whale vocalizations have been studied for years, but little is known of when, where, and how seasonal male singing begins in the fall and ends in the spring. Acoustic recordings of humpback whale vocalizations from Canada, the U.S.A, and the Caribbean in 2015-2017 were manually analysed. Humpback whales were present from Labrador to Massachusetts Bay during the fall and early winter. Song development occurred gradually over weeks with vocalizations transitioning from non-song calls to song fragments to full songs. Initially sporadic in occurrence, singing began in September, but was not regularly heard until late October, when full songs were common. I found evidence that the onset of regular singing occurs earlier at lower latitudes, longer photoperiods, and higher temperatures. The theme order in early season full songs was variable, until December when theme order became more consistent with what was observed the previous spring. Dominican Republic breeding ground songs recorded in January and March were crystalized in terms of theme order. Song duration increased gradually through the breeding season. Spring song cessation was only captured at a single site/season in Canada and compared to song development, it was abrupt with few song fragments. These late season songs had consistent theme orders. I propose that the patterns observed here may in part be driven by physiological processes like those of songbirds.

Book excerpt: Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are vocal baleen whales that exhibit complex social interactions that vary spatially and seasonally. Across their range, humpback whales produce a wide array of vocalizations including 'song', foraging vocalizations, and a range of vocalizations known as social calls -- unclassified non-song vocalizations. This study investigates the vocal repertoire and social calling behavior of Southeast Alaskan humpback whales from a sample of 299 vocalizations paired with 365 visual surveys collected over a three-month period on a foraging ground in Frederick Sound in Southeast Alaska. The results of this study describe a more varied and diverse repertoire of social vocalizations than has been previously documented, and identifies variability in vocal behavior as a function of social-spatial context. We used a three-part classification system that included aural-visual analysis, statistical cluster analyses, and discriminant function analysis to describe and classify social vocalizations. Vocalizations were classified into sixteen individual call types nested in seven vocal subclasses, within four vocal classes. The vocal repertoire of Southeast Alaskan humpbacks shows that call stereotypy ranges from discrete to continuous. This discrimination occurs at the vocal class and vocal subclass levels, and may be associated with call function. Social calls from Southeast Alaska showed anecdotal overlap with song from the 2012 North Pacific breeding season, and moderate overlap with vocalizations recorded in North Atlantic foraging grounds and along the East Australian migratory corridor. At the vocal class level aural-visual analysis had 83% agreement with cluster analysis and 90% agreement with discriminant function analysis. Results indicate that call use is not indiscriminant, and that some call types were commonly produced while others were rare. Moreover, calling rates in one vocal class, the pulsed (P) vocal class, were negatively correlated with mean nearest neighbor distance, indicating that P calling rates increased as animals clustered. This suggests the use of P calls may be spatially mediated. Results of a Poisson log linear (PLL) regression indicated that whale abundance in the survey area had no effect on vocal behavior; however, vocal behavior did vary significantly based on the spatial proximity of animals. The highest calling diversity occurred when whales were in clustered dispersion states, while the lowest calling diversity occurred when only a single whale was present. The type of calls produced during each dispersion state (clustered, random, evenly dispersed, single) varied significantly. While calls from all four vocal classes were detected during surveys containing clustered or randomly dispersed whales, calls from only two of the four classes were detected when whales were evenly distributed, and only one vocal class was detected from solitary whales. Our results indicated that vocal behavior is not correlated with abundance, that vocal behavior does vary based on social context, and that vocal behavior trends toward complexity as the potential for social interactions increases. Our evidence supports the hypothesis that social vocalizations serve a communicative purpose and may be used to maintain animal spatial proximity.

Book excerpt: The focus of this thesis is the use of sound for communication by the North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis). The surface active group (SAG) is the predominant social interaction in this species for which use of sound has been documented. Different group compositions in SAGs indicate that both potentially reproductive and non-reproductive groups have been combined under one label. Sound production in SAGs suggests that females form and maintain the groups by producing Scream calls. Males produce Upcalls to advertise their presence as they come into a group or when the female is on a dive. Males may use Gunshot sounds as threat signals to other males in the group or potentially as reproductive advertisement signals to the female. Some calves produce Warble sounds in SAGs. This may be limited to female calves. This description of acoustic activity in the groups adds to the picture of the SAGs as complex interactions between individuals, rather than simple groups with only one whale producing all the sounds to attract other whales to the group. Playback experiments demonstrate that right whales can use sounds from SAGs to locate the groups. Male right whales approached both North Atlantic and Southern right whale SAG playbacks. Female right whales only approached Southern right whale playbacks. Anatomical modeling resulted in a frequency range of hearing for the right whale (10 Hz - 22 kHz) that is consistent with the sounds that they produce and overlaps the frequency range of most anthropogenic noise sources. This combination of research provides a thorough description how North Atlantic right whales use sound in SAGs and how increasing levels of noise in the oceans may impact right whales in these groups.
