Book excerpt: Since ancient times, humankind has known the soothing and purifying power of music. Today, we too often forget the unifying spirituality of sound, allowing it to clutter our lives but never hearing its true and transcendental beauty. Here, the renowned Agni Deva offers traditional chants not as accompaniment to life but as a pathway to holiness. In speaking the name of God, one finds God incarnate in sound and brings the light of God into the world. The many names of gods in Vedic literature each represent a path to liberation, if one is able to utter them with consciousness and dedication. Yoga of Sound is an invitation and portal into a vast, beautiful world of traditional song to be listened to, not merely heard. It includes a CD of traditional kitrans and an introduction by Patrick Bernard, the creator of Sublime Relaxation and author of The Secret Music of the Soul.

Book excerpt: The songs and prayers included in this compilation of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava poetry are not mere songs and not mundane poetry. They are a transcendental creation expressing the inner moods of highly exalted spiritual personalities, the saintly devotees of our ancient tradition. They are portals to the spiritual world. They convey the essence of the Vaiṣṇava spiritual wisdom, and express the mood and philosophy of pure bhakti and prema - pure divine love. Such sublime devotional poetry can transport us to the transcendental realm of pure loving devotion for the Divine Couple, Śrī Rādhā and Krishna.Singing these songs, hearing them or even contemplating them in the written form will give us the higher taste of our soul's connection with the Divine Coupled. Such transcendental poetry can purify our hearts, elevate our consciousness and open the floodgates of mercy. We have all had the experience that when we do japa (chanting the Hare Krishna mahā-mantra on japa beads as an individual meditation) - the mind often wanders off. When we do our bhajan (deep silent meditation communing with our worshipable spiritual personalities) - the mind often wanders off. But when we chant together in kīrtan, congregational chanting of the holy name (Harinām Sankīrtan) the mind gets completely absorbed in the kīrtan and all the mental nonsense fly far away. Similarly when we sing bhajans together, the mind becomes sweetly absorbed and we spontaneously transcend our mundane state of consciousness. Kīrtan usually refers to chanting the mahā-mantra with a melody, and bhajans refers to singing about the pastimes and glories of Rādhā-Krishna and Their associates. But beyond that, kīrtan is a genuine prayer, a soulful song, a call from the heart to our Eternal Beloved. The word bhajan has two meanings: 'To sing bhajans' means singing devotional songs. 'To do bhajan' - means to render service by mind, to meditate internally on rendering service to Rādhā-Krishna with our mentally conceived spiritual form (svarūpa). The root verb of bhajan is bhaj, which means to serve or to worship. Therefore singing bhajans is a way of serving or worshiping Śrī Guru, Śrī Nitāi-Gaurānga, and Śrī Rādhā-Krishna.For example, taking prasād (foodstuffs which have been sanctified by being cooked and offered with love to the Lord) is referred to as prasād seva, serving (or honouring) the sacred remnants of the Lord. When we 'honour' prasād, we are not merely eating, we are serving Śrī Krishna. Therefore it is said that by taking prasād "We eat our way to the spiritual world." Similarly, when we sing bhajans, we are attracting Rādhā-Krishna's attention, praying for Their mercy, spiritualizing our consciousness, purifying our minds, softening and sweetening our hearts, and re-establishing our lost connection with Divinity. Thus by singing devotional songs (bhajans) we are "Singing our way to the spiritual realm." Of all the activities of bhakti, the sweetest and most heart-melting is the chanting and singing of kīrtans and bhajans. Our prayer is that the readers will cherish and relish the rare treasures hidden in every verse of every song therein and experience the sweet taste of bhakti for themselves. Radhe! Radhe!

Book excerpt: The songs and prayers included in this compilation of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava poetry are not mere songs and not mundane poetry. They are a transcendental creation expressing the inner moods of highly exalted spiritual personalities, saintly devotees. They are portals to the spiritual world. They convey the essence of the Vaiṣṇava spiritual tradition, the mood and philosophy of pure bhakti. Such devotional poetry can transport us to the transcendental realm of pure loving devotion to the Divine Couple, Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. Hearing these songs, singing them or contemplating them in the written form will give us the higher taste of our soul connection with our Eternal Beloved. Such transcendental poetry can purify our hearts, elevate our consciousness and open the floodgates of mercy. I have been asked by Prabhupād Śrīla Premgopāl Goswāmī to say a few words about the importance of singing bhajans as part of our daily practice of bhakti. When we chant the Hare Krishna maha mantra as an individual meditation on japa beads, the mind often wanders off. When we do our bhajan (deep silent meditation communing with Ṭhākurjī - our worshipable Lord, the mind often wanders off. But when we chant together in kīrtan, congregational chanting of the holy name (Harinām Sankīrtan) the mind gets completely absorbed in the kīrtan and all the mental nonsense fly away. Similarly when we sing bhajans together, the mind becomes sweetly absorbed and we transcend our mundane state of consciousness. Kīrtan usually refers to singing about the pastimes of the Lord (or chanting the mahā mantra with a melody) and bhajans refers to other devotional songs (although the two terms have now become somewhat interchangeable). But beyond that, kirtan is a soulful song, a prayer, a call from the heart. The word bhajan has two meanings; one is ''to sing bhajans'' - devotional songs. The other - ''to do bhajan'' - means to render service by mind, to meditate internally on rendering service to Thākurjī with our spiritual form (svarupa). The root verb of bhajan is bhaj which means to worship and to serve. Therefore singing bhajans is a way to serve or worship Śrī Guru, Gaurānga, and Rādhā-Krishna. Taking prasād (foodstuffs that have been spiritualized by being cooked and offered to Ṭhākurjī with love and devotion) is referred to as prasād seva, serving or honouring the sacred remnants of the Lord. When we honour prasād we are not merely eating, we are serving Śrī Krishna. It is said that on the path of bhakti "We eat our way to God." Similarly, when we engage in congregational singing of bhajans, we are attracting the attention of Thākurjī , praying to Thākurjī for mercy, spiritualizing our consciousness, purifying our minds, softening and sweetening our hearts, and literally "Singing our way to the spiritual realm and re-establishing our lost connetion with Divinity." Krishna tells us in the Bhagavad-gita that this process is to be joyfully performed. What is more joyful than singing and dancing together? This is the closest we can get to experience the bliss and ecstasy of bhakti. This path of bhakti is so sweet that all our daily activities can be dovetailed with bhakti and be considered devotional service. We get up in the morning to worship the Lord in the heart, we tidy up and clean our space as service to the Lord ("Our home is our temple"), we cook for the pleasure of the Lord, we wash the pots as service to the Lord, we do puja to delight Thākurjī, we chant Hare Krishna for Thākurjī''s pleasure, we hear, speak or read the philosophy of bhakti and the pastimes of the Divine Couple (harikatha) for Their pleasure, and we sing and dance for Their pleasure. Of all the activities above, the sweetest and most heart- touching is the chanting and singing of kīrtans and bhajans. Our prayer is that the readers will relish and cherish the rare treasures hidden in the verses of every song therein and experience the higher taste of bhakti for themselves.Radhe Radhe!

  • Pages : 546 pages

Download or read book Music of Hindu Trinidad written by Helen Myers and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many other small towns in Trinidad, Felicity is populated almost entirely by East Indians. In their Caribbean exile, the residents of Felicity have created and recreated the music of their Hindu ancestors. Music of Hindu Trinidad is a fascinating account of the history and cultural significance of Hindu music that explores its symbolic, aesthetic, and psychological aspects while asking the larger question of how this music has contributed to the formation of identity in the midst of their great diaspora. Myers details the musical repertory of Felicity, which is based largely on north Indian genres including the traditional Bhojpuri folk songs and drumming styles brought by the first indentured laborers in 1845. In her engaging exploration of the fate of Indian classical music and new popular styles such as Hindi calypso, soca, and chutney, she even finds herself at the ancestral home of Trinidadian V. S. Naipaul in India. Copiously illustrated and accompanied by a compact disk, Music of Hindu Trinidad is a model ethnographic study.
