Book excerpt: From the authors of the New York Times bestselling parody The Hunger Pains, this fresh take on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is a hilarious send-up of Middle-earth, publishing just in time for the major motion picture release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The sequel to the parody of the sequel to the prequel to The Lord of the Rings When Aaron Sorkinshield and his band of Little People embark on a totally feasible quest to reclaim the hoard of Academy Awards stolen from them by the lonely Puff the Magic Dragon, senile wizard Dumbledalf suggests an unlikely and completely unqualified accomplice: Billy Bagboy, an unassuming wobbit dwelling in terrorist-riddled Wobbottabad. Along the way, the company faces Internet trolls, moblins, one really big spider that must be at least an inch and a half wide, and worse. But as they journey from the wonders of Livinwell to the terrors of Jerkwood and beyond, Billy will find that there is more to him than anyone—Tolkien included—ever dreamed. Propelled to his destiny by a series of courageous adventures and indented paragraphs, Billy will set out on the greatest YOLO of all time . . . one that leads deep into the dark caverns hiding a mysterious man named Goldstein, who’s just trying to have a nice seder.

Book This is the Sound of Irony Music Politics and Popular Culture

Download or read book This is the Sound of Irony Music Politics and Popular Culture written by Katherine L. Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of irony in music is just beginning to be defined and critiqued, although it has been used, implied and decried by composers, performers, listeners and critics for centuries. Irony in popular music is especially worthy of study because it is pervasive, even fundamental to the music, the business of making music and the politics of messaging. Contributors to this collection address a variety of musical ironies found in the ’notes themselves,’ in the text or subtext, and through performance, reception and criticism. The chapters explore the linkages between irony and the comic, the tragic, the remembered, the forgotten, the co-opted, and the resistant. From the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, through America, Europe and Asia, this provocative range of ironies course through issues of race, religion, class, the political left and right, country, punk, hip hop, folk, rock, easy listening, opera and the technologies that make possible our pop music experience. This interdisciplinary volume creates new methodologies and applies existing theories of irony to musical works that have made a cultural or political impact through the use of this most multifaceted of devices.

Book Satire in the Songs of Renart Le Nouvel

Download or read book Satire in the Songs of Renart Le Nouvel written by John Dickinson Haines and published by Droz Librairie. This book was released on 2010 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places the songs of Renart le nouvel in the broader context of this late medieval romance. As argued here, Renart le nouvel was written in two different stages, its first book around 1260 and its second around 1300. The first book presents situations and animals that stand for key events and characters in 1250s Flanders, mostly pertaining to the famous quarrel of the Avesnes and Dampierre families. The second book ushers in a more apocalyptic mood that reflects the deteriorating political situation in Flanders in the final decades of the thirteenth century. The songs of Renart le nouvel give voice both to a mounting apocalyptic mood and to a related cynicism towards courtly love. As the embodiment of duplicity, Renart the fox sings an especially cynical song, one that is ultimately passed on to an animal that makes a brief appearance in our romance but is soon destined for fame: Fauvel the ass. In particular, the emerging genre of the motet expresses the duplicitous and satirical spirits of the fox and the ass. French text.

Book Irony Satire Parody and the Grotesque in the Music of Shostakovich

Download or read book Irony Satire Parody and the Grotesque in the Music of Shostakovich written by Esti Sheinberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of Shostakovich has been at the centre of interest of both the general public and dedicated scholars throughout the last twenty years. Most of the relevant literature, however, is of a biographical nature. The focus of this book is musical irony. It offers new methodologies for the semiotic analysis of music, and inspects the ironical messages in Shostakovich?s music independently of political and biographical bias. Its approach to music is interdisciplinary, comparing musical devices with the artistic principles and literary analyses of satire, irony, parody and the grotesque. Each one of these is firstly inspected and defined as a separate subject, independent of music. The results of these inspections are subsequently applied to music, firstly music in general and then more specifically to the music of Shostakovich. The composer?s cultural and historical milieux are taken into account and, where relevant, inspected and analysed separately before their application to the music.
