Book Something Inside So Strong

Download or read book Something Inside So Strong written by Mildred Pitts Walter and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1922, Mildred Pitts Walter was born in DeRidder, Louisiana, to a log cutter and a midwife/beautician. She became the first member of her family to go to college, graduating in 1940. Walter moved to California, where she worked as an elementary school teacher. After being encouraged by a publisher to write books for and about African American children, Walter went on to become a pioneer of African American children's literature. Most notably, she wrote Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World, which bent preconceptions with tales of black cowboys and men doing “women’s work.” She was also a contributing book reviewer to the Los Angeles Times. In Something Inside So Strong: Life in Pursuit of Choice, Courage, and Change, Walter recollects major touchstones in her life. The autobiography, divided into three parts, “Choice,” “Courage,” and “Change,” covers Walter’s life beginning with her childhood in the 1920s and moving to the present day. In “Choice,” Walter describes growing up in a deeply segregated Louisiana and includes memories of school, rural home life, World War II, and participating in neighborhood activities like hog killing and church revivals. “Courage” documents her adjustment to living away from family, her experiences teaching in Los Angeles, and her extensive work with her husband for the Los Angeles chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality. The final section, “Change,” shows how Walter’s writing and activism merged, detailing her work as an education consultant and as an advocate for nonviolent resistance to racism. It also reveals how her world travels expanded her personal inquiry into Christianity and African spirituality. Something Inside So Strong is one woman’s journey to self-discovery.

  • Author : Stephen Millar
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2020-05-07
  • ISBN : 047213194X
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Sounding Dissent written by Stephen Millar and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signing of the Good Friday Agreement on April 10, 1998, marked the beginning of a new era of peace and stability in Northern Ireland. As the public has overwhelmingly rejected a return to the violence of the Troubles (1968–1998), loyalist and republican groups have sought other outlets to continue their struggle. Music has long been used to celebrate cultural identity in the North of Ireland: from street parades to football chants, and from folk festivals to YouTube videos, music facilitates the continuation of pre-Agreement identity narratives in a “post-conflict” era. Sounding Dissent draws on original in-depth interviews with Irish republican musicians, contemporary audiences, and former paramilitaries, as well as diverse historical and archival material, including songbooks, prison records, and newspaper articles, to understand the history of political violence in Ireland. The book examines the hagiographic potential of rebel songs to memorialize a pantheon of republican martyrs, and demonstrates how musical performance and political song not only articulate experiences and memories of oppression and violence, but play a central role in the reproduction of conflict and exclusion in times of peace.

Book The Great Shift Psycho spiritual Manual for Survival and Transformation in the Trump Era

Download or read book The Great Shift Psycho spiritual Manual for Survival and Transformation in the Trump Era written by Melinda Contreras-Byrd and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a US-based, prophetic-themed, “race” and culture-focused work which will serve to foster discussion on several important topics for Christians seeking to live out their faith in this present socio-political era. The foundational belief underlying this book is that we are living in an era of unique possibilities for the church to begin to make second-order changes in our views of Christianity, the church universal, and the real life applications of theological concepts of evil and spiritual warfare as they apply to the struggles of this time in history. For Black people in the United States, racism has long been the elephant in the room during most Black/White interactions on any level. Growing expressions of racism have now forced the elephant not only to the forefront of White discourse, but the elephant now sits comfortably at the altar railing of both Black and White church sanctuaries. This book argues that we are at a critical time for action, and gives suggestions for what at least some of those educational, theological and psychological actions could be.

Book Ghost Ship

Download or read book Ghost Ship written by A.D.A France-Williams and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church is very good at saying all the right things about racial equality. But the reality is that the institution has utterly failed to back up these good intentions with demonstrable efforts to reform. It is a long way from being a place of black flourishing. Through conversation with clergy, lay people and campaigners in the Church of England, A.D.A France-Williams issues a stark warning to the church, demonstrating how black and brown ministers are left to drown in a sea of complacency and collusion. While sticking plaster remedies abound, France-Williams argues that what is needed is a wholesale change in structure and mindset. Unflinching in its critique of the church, Ghost Ship explores the harrowing stories of institutional racism experienced then and now, within the Church of England. Far from being an issue which can be solved by simply recruiting more black and brown clergy, says France-Williams, structural racism requires a wholesale dismantling and reassembling of the ship - before it is too late.

Download or read book Producing Country written by Michael Jarrett and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musicians make music. Producers make records. In the early days of recorded music, the producer was the "artists-and-repertoire man," or A&R man, for short. A powerful figure, the A&R man chose both who would record and what they would record. His decisions profoundly shaped our musical tastes. Don Law found country bluesman Robert Johnson and honky-tonk crooner Lefty Frizzell. Cowboy Jack Clement took the initiative to record Jerry Lee Lewis (while his boss, Sam Phillips, was away on business). When Ray Charles said he wanted to record a country-and-western album, Sid Feller gathered songs for his consideration. The author's extensive interviews with music makers offer the fullest account ever of the producer's role in creating country music. In its focus on recordings and record production, Producing Country tells the story of country music from its early years to the present day through hit records by Hank Williams, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard, among many others. Includes original interviews with producers Chet Atkins, Pete Anderson, Jimmy Bowen, Bobby Braddock, Harold Bradley, Tony Brown, Blake Chancey, Jack Clement, Scott Hendricks, Bob Johnston, Jerry Kennedy, Blake Mevis, Ken Nelson, Jim Ed Norman, Allen Reynolds, Jim Rooney, James Stroud, Paul Worley, and Reggie Young, among others.
