Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We have passed through the eye of the needle!” my father was fond of saying. And indeed we had. Now, after four years and four months of German occupation, we had survived. Neither morality nor faith had anything to do with our survival but survive we did. Money, sex and luck all had a hand in it. Germany, the most powerful nation in Europe, had decreed that all Jews were to be exterminated, not only the adults but especially the children. Once the children had been murdered, the “Jewish Question” would have been resolved once and for all. The Allied armies had finally swept through Belgium and liberated us after we had spent twenty-seven months in hiding. Our parents, Hilaire and Frieda Rosenberg went about trying to resume some semblance of family life; my sister Ruth and I would be going back to school after nearly three years of interrupted studies. It would take years for me to fathom the enormity of what we had been through, to understand why we did survive. Our parents were gamblers and people they knew through the Casinos hid us. Hilaire made large amounts of money in black-market dealings with the Germans so we could pay for the cupidity of those who would hide us. Frieda had an affair with an SS officer who warned us when we had to go into hiding. After attending the 1991 Conference of Hidden Children in New York City I knew that this unusual story of survival had to be written. Thus began a journey to a second liberation, an understanding that although they had been less than perfect parents, Hilaire and Frieda did all they humanly could do to ensure the survival of this nucleus of our family.

Book excerpt: "If you survive your first day, I'll promote you." So promised George Wilson's World War II commanding officer in the hedgerows of Normandy -- and it was to be a promise dramatically fulfilled. From July, 1944, to the closing days of the war, from the first penetration of the Siegfried Line to the Nazis' last desperate charge in the Battle of the Bulge, Wilson fought in the thickest of the action, helping take the small towns of northern France and Belgium building by building. Of all the men and officers who started out in Company F of the 4th Infantry Division with him, Wilson was the only one who finished. In the end, he felt not like a conqueror or a victor, but an exhausted survivor, left with nothing but his life -- and his emotions. If You Survive One of the great first-person accounts of the making of a combat veteran, in the last, most violent months of World War II.

Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Hailed as the top nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography and the Indies Choice Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year award “Extraordinarily moving . . . a powerfully drawn survival epic.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] one-in-a-billion story . . . designed to wrench from self-respecting critics all the blurby adjectives we normally try to avoid: It is amazing, unforgettable, gripping, harrowing, chilling, and inspiring.”—New York “Staggering . . . mesmerizing . . . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wendy Call visited the Isthmus of Tehuantepec—the lush sliver of land connecting the Yucatan Peninsula to the rest of Mexico—for the first time in 1997. She found herself in the midst of a storied land, a place Mexicans call their country's “little waist,” a place long known for its strong women, spirited marketplaces, and deep sense of independence. She also landed in the middle of a ferocious battle over plans to industrialize the region, where most people still fish, farm, and work in the forests. In the decade that followed her first visit, Call witnessed farmland being paved for new highways, oil spilling into rivers, and forests burning down. Through it all, local people fought to protect their lands and their livelihoods—and their very lives. Call’s story, No Word for Welcome, invites readers into the homes, classrooms, storefronts, and fishing boats of the isthmus, as well as the mahogany-paneled high-rise offices of those striving to control the region. With timely and invaluable insights into the development battle, Call shows that the people who have suffered most from economic globalization have some of the clearest ideas about how we can all survive it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This epic drama opens in Boulder, Colorado, at the home of Oxford-educated Robert Dalton, an internationally known chemistry professor. His houseguest is Jozef Bardowski, head of the analytical laboratory of Warsaw's Nuclear Energy Institute. Knowing that Dalton, accompanied by his Polish-born wife Helena, will shortly embark upon a year's sabbatical at the University of Vienna, Bardowski expresses his fears that someone is introducing mind-altering drugs into Poland's natural gas to subdue the Polish people. In order to present the matter to the United Nations, he asks Dalton to analyze gas samples to be smuggled from Warsaw into the Austrian capital. Dalton agrees, unaware that by doing so he will subject both himself and Helena to acts of terror, including an attempt on his own life. It was a challenging undertaking to attempt to combine in one narrative the heady subject of Poland's most recent drive to free herself from oppression and the levity engendered by Robert Dalton, et al. I really did my best to show that the Polish cause is far from humorous but that humanity in general is. With the story's conclusion, I tried to see to it that each of the principles got what he or she deserved. I trust you will not be disappointed. It was my Polish friend Jozef who some years ago said to me: "No, life is not fair. Many times we lose when we should have won. But always remember this: Once you've lost the ability to laugh at whatever life deals you, then, then you've lost everything." I believe this philosophy typifies the warm, good-hearted, fun-loving, courageous people who reside in that wonderful country known to them as the Land of the White Eagle. Sylvia Tascher

It depicts two brothers in America, Zalman and Jacob, who face, in their affluent lives, deceit, romantic and business betrayal, and bitterness. Book excerpt: This move back home represented for me another punch and I was reeling with it to the other side of the ring and the other side of the world. It felt like I kept bouncing off the boxing ring ropes. Boing! Boing! I was amazed that I could still feel something after all the punches I was the recipient of. I wished I were numb but I wasn’t. You feel each blow and that is what divorce is. Blow after blow and you being bounced off the sides of the ring in the craziest scheme of things. Total loss of control as your body is flung to all sides like a rag doll. They packed. We smoked. I cried. A Divorcee Divorce is real self-discovery. Isn’t it funny that all the letters of the word Divorce can be found in the word Discovery? Divorce is the catalyst for self-discovery: if life were logical, it would start with a divorce. Divorce is about Separation and Life is a series of successive separations that make up this story, as all of our stories. In my story, the accent may be on divorce, but we can also realize, that in life we all lead divorces. Divorce from a country of origin, a job, living with parents and then with children, our culture, our language, our youth...
