Book The Collins and Travis Families and Their Allies

Download or read book The Collins and Travis Families and Their Allies written by Mary Collins Landin and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Collins (1612-1705) immigrated in 1635 from Kent County, England to King and Queen County, Virginia. His father, John Collins Jr. (ca.1590-1663), immigrated in 1655 to Surry County, Virginia. Edward Travers (b.1592) immigrated from England to Jamestown, Virginia and changed his surname to Travis. He married Ann Johnson, and while some of his children still used the surname Travers, his son William Travis (ca.1640-1680) did not and was the line used in this book. Intermarriage between the Collins and Travis families for the lines in this book occurred when Thomas Edward Collins Jr. (b.1908) married Nell Ellis Travis in 1937. They live on a farm near Utica, Mississippi. Descendants and relatives of the immigrant ancestors lived in Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and elsewhere. Includes ancestry on the Travis--Travers and some other lines to 1066 A.D. in England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, Volume V, is the genealogy of Crockett Family and connecting lines. The Southern States were settled by three great waves of emigration, -Cavalier, Scotch-Irish and Huguenot. - These types retain their characteristics to this day, perhaps, largely, because groups of relatives, friends or neighbors settled in one section and gave a dominant tinge in creed, and church, and custom. The sons and daughters of these families married, and creed and custom grew stronger from year to year. Thus the Scotch-Irish, a people of Scotch origin, though living in Ireland for many years before the American emigration, settled in certain parts of Virginia, North and South Carolina, and, what is now, East Tennessee, in great numbers and impressed their Presbyterian faith upon their posterity. In the chapters of this book examples will be given of each of these groups-Cavalier, Scotch-Irish and Huguenot. The early history of these well-known Southern families is here presented, being published, at least in collected form, for the first time. The compiler takes no credit for authorship, as genealogy is not a science of invention. The facts, however, are clearly stated, and in the case of each family each line may be brought down to the present day from the earliest settler in America. The Colonial, Revolutionary, War of 1812 and War Between the States record of each family is set forth succinctly. No space has been given to tradition, though many traditions in the families mentioned are interesting and doubtless could be followed up and proved. Many histories have been consulted and many family documents studied, only reliable records being used. Though the chief endeavor of these chapters is to show the Colonial or Revolutionary settler and his posterity, a brief line of his progenitors is given in some cases, as the origin of name and family is always interesting. Hundreds of histories, court records and family documents have been examined in the preparation of this volume, and a large group of family members and members of the connecting lines have provided assistance. Some of these individuals includes David Graham, Mrs. Sidney S. Crockett, Mrs. Anna Bell Tuck-Sapp, Mrs. Wirt Johnson Carrington, J. Newton Harman, Miss Kitty Crockett, Mrs. Homer F. Sloan, and many others.

Book Race and Family in the Colonial South

Download or read book Race and Family in the Colonial South written by and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of papers from the Porter M. Fortune Chancellor's Symposium in Southern History held at the University of Mississippi in 1986 questions what was distinctively "southern" about the colonial South. Though this region was a land of diversity and had the kind of provincialism that typified other English colonies during this period, the editors find it nearly impossible to characterize the colonial South as unique. The roots of southern distinctiveness, however, were taking hold in the years before the American Revolution, as the papers here attest. In the opening essay Tate surveys recent historical scholarship on the period and targets trends for further study. Next, Galloway examines Indian-French relations in eastern Louisiana during the eighteenth century. Smith describes the family unit and examines the various forces that worked against its formation. In an examination of three slave-owning families, Morgan casts a new light on slavery in the colonies which he argues to have operated within a harsh patriarchal system that stressed domination, "order, authority, and unswerving obedience." Menard's essay also is on the subject of slavery, showing the unique system in the Low Country of South Carolina. In the final paper Middlekauff assesses each of the preceding papers and suggests subjects for future studies of the colonial South.
