Book excerpt: These cohabitation records may help you put families together and aid in forming extended family members. The tables are comprised of two different types of information: A Register of Children of Colored Persons Whose Parents Had Ceased to Cohabit Which the Father Recognizes to be His and A Register of Colored Persons Cohabiting Together as Husband and Wife. The Register of Children usually gives the child's name, age, place of birth, residence, and the last owner. Also included are the parent's names, ages, residences, and last owner. The Cohabiting Records generally include the husband's and wife's names and ages, their residence, their last owner with his/her residence, and a list of their children and ages plus a date of the start of their cohabitation or the number of years together. Although the information in each table is similar it may be arranged in different sequences. The place of birth is usually the county and the residence is usually the town. Ages are given and can aid in estimating a birth year. The same applies to estimating a death year. Some registers indicate children by a first wife. Names can be repeated more than once on a page with different owners, wives, and ages. Counties and states are included in the full-name index to facilitate research.

Digital curation presents an important framework for the continued preservation of digitized and born-digital collections, given the ephemeral and device-dependent nature of digital content. With the emergence of analog and digital media formats in close succession (compared to earlier paper- and film-based formats) came new standards, technologies, methods, documentation, and workflows to ensure safe storage and access to content and associated metadata. Researchers in the digital humanities have extensively applied computing to research; for them, continued access to primary data and cultural heritage means both the continuation of humanities scholarship and new methodologies not possible without digital technology. Digital Curation in the Digital Humanities, therefore, comprises a joint framework for preserving, promoting, and accessing digital collections. This book explores at great length the conceptualization of digital curation projects with interdisciplinary approaches that combine the digital humanities and history, information architecture, social networking, and other themes for such a framework. The authors not only cover hitherto less researched geographical areas, but have also addressed new questions and added new source material. Most of the contributors to this anthology use a micro-his-torical approach. With this approach, it is not the entire area of the country, with millions of separate individuals that are in focus but rather particular and cohesive ethnic and religious communities. Micro-history does not mean ignoring a macro-historical perspective. What happened on the local level had an all-Union context, and communism was a European-wide phenomenon. This means that the history of minorities in the Soviet Union during Stalin's rule cannot be grasped outside the national and international context; aspects which are also considered in this volume. The chapters of the book are case studies on various minority groups, both ethnic and religious. In this way, the book gives a more complex picture of the causes and effects of the state-run mass violence during Stalinism. The publication is the outcome of a multidisciplinary international research network lead by Andrej Kotljarchuk (SOdertOrn University, Sweden) and Olle SundstrOm (UmeA University, Sweden) and consisting of specialists from Estonia, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine and the United States.
