Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Points in Regard to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Disease The subject of the diagnosis and treat ment of heart disease is so large and so important, and so many points are worthy of prolonged discussion, that it would be impossible to condense into one paper of reasonable length more than a few points in regard to it. In what follows, therefore, merely some thoughts and Opinions in relation to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the heart will be alluded to, much of the ground being either entirely ignored or briefly mentioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Disease: Practical Points for Students and Practitioners The demand for a second edition of this small work has enabled me to alter and add to it considerably. I hope it will prove even more useful now to students and practitioners than it did in its original form. It could have been improved further had not National affairs distracted attention from teaching matters. In this small work I have attempted to put simply, clearly and in convenient pocket-book form for clinical reference the elements of cardiac auscultation for the use of students. I have repeated myself a good deal with the object of making an argument or explanation as complete as possible in the one place and thereby of avoiding turning backwards and forwards. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Heart: Diagnosis and Treatment In writing the following pages, I have been scrupulously careful not to place my own unsustained assertions in opposition to the results of clinical demonstrations or extreme probabilities. I have also endeavored to give the anatomy, or topography, of the structures under consideration, with as much accuracy as possible. There are no such obstacles now, in the way of writing intelligibly on diagnosis of diseases of the heart, as there were even twenty-five years ago. If medicine has not yet become a science, it has, at least, so far advanced as to recognize its own defects, and to be conscious of its absolute knowledge. Physicians now know where their knowledge ends and their theories begin; and in this they are far in advance of their forefathers. My aim has been to limit myself, as closely as possible, to known facts, and to indulge in no idle speculations, for the purpose of introducing some favorite theory of my own, in order to make myself seem original. I need not tell my intelligent readers that this treatise is merely an abstract; but it is hoped that they will find it what the author designed it to be, a careful and conscientious epitome of the knowledge now possessed by the profession on the subject of which it treats. My only claim to their commendation will consist in having placed the knowledge already possessed in a more accessible form, of having made the facts we daily need to use more tangible, by stripping them of some of their garniture, and grouping them in closer and more obvious relations to each other. Book Diseases of the Heart Their Diagnosis Prognosis and Treatment by Modern Methods

Download or read book Diseases of the Heart Their Diagnosis Prognosis and Treatment by Modern Methods written by Frederick William Price and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Heart, Their Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Treatment by Modern Methods: With a Chapter on the Electrocardiograph The object of this book is to present, in as concise a form as possible, information which will be of service in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of diseases of the heart by modern methods. I have dealt with the subject from the point of view of the clinician, and have carefully avoided matter of merely theoretical interest. It is generally recognised that within recent years there has been a great advance in our knowledge of cardiac disorders, and this advance has been of so practical a character and of such vital importance in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of these diseases, that it is the duty of every clinician to make himself acquainted with its nature and scope. Many of the problems in the study of diseases of the heart which have baffled clinicians for generations have been practically solved, while others are in process of solution. This progress has been mainly due to the introduction of what are called graphic methods in the examination of the cardiac mechanism. By means of the clinical polygraph and the electro-cardiograph we are now able to analyse the cardiac action in a manner which was never possible before. The expert knowledge and use of these instruments, however, arc for practical purposes frequently not necessary; for, while it is true that most of our recent knowledge in the domain of cardiac disorders has been gained by means of them, all that is necessary in a large proportion of cases is the use of a Dudgeon's sphygmograph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heart Disease: With Special Reference to Prognosis and Treatment Advantage is taken of the demand for a new edition of the work on the Heart to make the book more complete, and with this view chapters on acute affections of the heart, Endocarditis, Pericarditis, Myocarditis, and on Aneurysm of the Arch of the Aorta, have been added. In these, as in the original work, no attempt is made to give a systematic and complete treatise on each subject, or to enter into a discussion of conflicting views which have been entertained on various points of pathology and etiology. The object has been rather to endeavour to place before the reader a clinical picture of each disease and to emphasize the points which are of chief importance in diagnosis and prognosis.
