This survey asks same-sex attracted and gender-questioning young people across Australia about their experiences and the issues they face. In 2010, 3,134 young people participated, aged between 14 and 21, from remote, rural, and urban areas. Survey topics include sexual attraction and sexual feelings, first realisation, sexual identity, sexual experience, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy, verbal and physical abuse, links between abuse and negative health, drug use and self harm, feeing safe, schooling, internet use, disclosure and support, support as a buffer against homophobia, school policies and school culture, sexuality education and sources of information, sex education at school, and the influence of religion and rurality. Based on the findings, the report also presents recommendations for public education.

The anthology includes interviews, analysis, communiques, and other documents relating to Bash Back! and the tendency that it spawned. We view queer as the blurring of sexual and gender identities. Queer is the refusal of fixed identities. It is a war on all identity. In line with the Bash Back! tendency, for the uses of this anthology queer is trans because the gender binary is inherently oppressive. More often than not, our use of the term queer is interchangeable with our use of trans, though that is not necessarily true of the way in which trans-whatever is used. With these notions we are not naïve. We acknowledge that society ensures Queer is an oppressed identity. Anti-Queer oppression is the systematic violence that people who fall outside of traditional sexual or gender categories encounter.

As a prefix, "trans" can attach itself to other words to express or describe movement and change, as it does in the terms "transnational" or "transmedia." Trans is also an adjective when it is part of a word that signifies an identity or expression. Trans has worked as an adjective to destabilize established ideas about gender as it makes new senses of what gender can mean for trans people. Much of the study of life writing is about the study of identity and the possibilities for lives that stories of identity make possible. In that spirit, Trans Narratives: trans, transmedia, transnational represents an opportunity for critical work about life writing by trans people to be featured, as it seeks to interrogate the idea of trans in multiple registers, bringing a prefix to the center of the current field of life-writing studies. It aims to understand through life writing and its theory what trans means when we talk about identities and bodies, and to understand better what the critical terms transmedia and transnational can mean for the field of life writing.
