Book Managing the Embedded Multinational

Download or read book Managing the Embedded Multinational written by Mats Forsgren and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is based on an extensive dataset and a very well documented case study. Such a wealth of empirical material provides an ideal ground to test theories and enables the authors to elaborate interesting conceptualisations of some specific aspects of the broader network approach, particularly concerning the internationalisation of business networks. Anna Spadavecchia, Business History Combined with recent advances in network analysis [the book] can be instrumental in advancing our understanding, which will not only be useful for research scholars, but also provide practical guidance for managers. . . It is full of ideas which seem like deceptively simple black stones that in the hands of a skillful artisan can be turned into dazzling diamonds. Charles Dhanaraj, Journal of International Business Studies The work by Forsgren et al. offers a major contribution in terms of the analytical power of network relationships. By shifting to an exchange based perspective, they challenge the classical view of organizational power and control, but also the sources of organizational capabilities. They argue that the distinct capabilities and resources of the organization are developed through relationships and connections. Wilhelm Barner-Rasmussen, Rebecca Piekkari, Joanna Scott-Kennel and Catherine Welch, Academy of Management Perspectives An interesting and insightful book. It questions a lot of traditional thinking about international firms and the way they operate. Throughout the book, the reader is invited to develop a different perspective. This perspective might be called a relationships and networks theory of the firm. While this may sound familiar, the book goes well beyond anything I have seen in the existing literature, in terms of conceptualizing relationships and networks and in using this perspective to guide and interpret case study and survey research results. William G. Egelhoff, Fordham University, US It is now well accepted in the academic literature that the multinational corporation can be usefully modelled as a network of relationships. But it is less well-known that the origins of this perspective can be traced back to work done in Uppsala, Sweden, in the 1970s and 1980s. The term business network was first used there, and many important ideas around power and influence have also emerged from this research centre. In this new book, three of the key members of the Uppsala school develop a synthesis of the more recent ideas to come out of their research on networks. By focusing on the concept of the embedded multinational they show how the internal networks of the multinational interact with the web of external networks each subsidiary unit has in its local market. This book provides a definitive and compelling point of view of the importance of networking thinking to the study of the multinational corporation. It is an important book, and it will be widely cited in years to come. Julian Birkinshaw, London Business School, UK Forsgren, Holm, and Johanson have been among the leaders in developing the idea of the multinational firm as a network that spans different country environments. This perspective cautions the easy prescription that a multinational firm can do everything easily, if it just has the right organizational form. Relationships matter, as do the legitimacy of the firm in the context of its foreign investments. This book provides rich case insights into these dimensions. Bruce Kogut, INSEAD, France This book expands the business network view on managerial issues in multinational corporations. Specifically, it scrutinises the importance of a subsidiary s external and internal business network for its strategic and organizational role within the corporation. The internationalisation of firms in terms of management issues and headquarters control, the influence of subsidiaries on decisions and learning processes within multinational corporations are examined in detail. It is argued that

Book Network Embeddedness

Download or read book Network Embeddedness written by Milena Ratajczak-Mrozek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematizes the concepts of business relationships and network embeddedness, taking a new approach to internationalization, relevant for the global economy. It reflects the growing importance of network internationalization theory and explores the impact of embeddedness in domestic and foreign relationships on a company’s performance. The author questions the validity of the distinction between domestic and foreign activity of companies and demonstrates that in the B2B market, there are actually no exclusively domestic companies which are not directly or indirectly connected with foreign entities. Chapters cover both small to medium sized enterprises and large multinational corporations, presenting a qualitative analysis of over 400 companies including case studies from the IT and furniture industries. This informative study will provide useful insight for academics and students of business and management, international business and organization studies.

Book Headquarters and Subsidiaries in Multinational Corporations

Download or read book Headquarters and Subsidiaries in Multinational Corporations written by S. Johnston and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-07-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the global business environment, new organizational forms come and go but in today's multinational corporations the headquarters-subsidiary link remains the primary channel by which the firm is managed. Using data from CEOs of a large sample of Australian subsidiaries of foreign firms, this book brings new insights into the nature of this vital corporate relationship.

Book Born Globals Networks and the Large Multinational Enterprise

Download or read book Born Globals Networks and the Large Multinational Enterprise written by Shameen Prashantham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on international entrepreneurship, this research book explores the accelerated internationalization of young firms. Known variously as international new ventures (INVs) or "born globals," such firms have come to be viewed as legitimate actors on the global stage alongside large multinational enterprises (MNEs). However, the current approach taken by scholars – studying large MNEs and born globals separately – is questionable. This book explores the crucial MNE/INV interface – a fascinating, yet under-researched relationship in international entrepreneurship. Drawing upon a decade of case-based research, the author argues that the MNE influence on born globals must be considered more carefully and suggests how new ventures can leverage MNE networks in the pursuit of their rapid internationalization. Furthermore, it demonstrates that, as firms enhance their levels of innovation, new pathways emerge via multinational corporation networks, a phenomenon vividly demonstrated in the emerging economy context of the Bangalore software industry. This innovative research text will be of interest to academics, researchers, and advanced students with an interest in international entrepreneurship and business, strategy, innovation, and new ventures.

Book Innovation and Institutional Embeddedness of Multinational Companies

Download or read book Innovation and Institutional Embeddedness of Multinational Companies written by Martin Heidenreich and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This wonderful volume brings together contributions mainly from the innovation literature, whose findings are in a sense quite familiar, but which in this collection are juxtaposed in such a way as to highlight their common institutional underpinnings. This is very much due to the efforts of the editor, whose insightful introduction and editorial vision brings out several interesting and emerging themes from this collection of papers. I think this volume breaks new ground in highlighting the embeddedness of MNE subsidiaries in multiple contexts, and it will be of considerable interest to scholars engaged with institutional analysis. However, I also believe that researchers interested in regional embeddedness, the geography of innovation, and knowledge management will find new angles to their work in this collected volume.' – Sarianna M. Lundan, University of Bremen, Germany Multinational companies are crucial actors in a global knowledge-based economy, combining the advantages of global and locally coordinated production and innovation strategies with specific regional and national factors. This book questions how MNCs can best exploit institutionally embedded knowledge, explores the utilization of external institutionally embedded knowledge in corporate innovation processes, and addresses the challenges of embeddedness. The expert contributors draw on managerial, economic, geographic and sociological perspectives to explore the essential roles of regional and national knowledge infrastructures and the cultural and political environment of MNCs. They build upon, update, and extend the discussion on the regional and national embeddedness of MNCs with new country case studies and comparative analyses, focussing on the relationship between innovation in companies and regional studies. Significantly, the book also establishes a link between two important debates that have hitherto been largely disconnected: Regional studies and international business studies separately address issues that fall within the scope of the book, but do not provide an integrated analysis of the embeddedness of MNCs. This pathbreaking book goes some way to fill this gap in the literature and as such, will prove invaluable to academics, R&D managers, regional policy makers and students with an interest in international business, business economics, regional studies and organization studies.

Book External Embeddedness of Subsidiaries

Download or read book External Embeddedness of Subsidiaries written by Swantje Hartmann and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the research fields of International Business and International Management it is stated that product innovations are not only developed by headquarters (HQs) but also by foreign subsidiaries. Subsidiaries thereby apply the knowledge they obtain in inter-organizational business relationships with stakeholders like customers, suppliers, competitors, research institutions or governmental organizations. After being finished, product innovations are either exclusively employed by the creative subsidiaries or they are also transferred in intra-organizational business relationships to other units of the MNC, i. e. HQs or other subsidiaries. This book deals with both the product innovation process in foreign subsidiaries and the innovation transfer process to other units of the MNC. Using the example of the pharmaceutical industry it demonstrates which stakeholders affect the development of a product innovation. For the first time, stakeholders, business relationships and knowledge flows are analyzed at each stage of the product innovation process. The study proves that during the innovation process different stakeholders - other than the often analyzed customers and suppliers - play a crucial role for the foreign subsidiary. Above that, the book depicts the sophisticated structures and processes that MNCs in the pharmaceutical industry have established to transfer the newly created product innovations within their companies. The book addresses researchers and students in the fields of International, Strategic or Innovation Management that are interested in inter-organizational and intra-organizational embeddedness and knowledge flows of MNCs. It is also helpful for managers to control product innovation and transfer processes and the related business relationships and knowledge flows.

Book Theories of the Multinational Firm

Download or read book Theories of the Multinational Firm written by M. Forsgren and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is all about understanding multinational companies (MNCs) why they exist, how they compete, and their impact on society. Six important theoretical perspectives of the MNC are discussed at length and compared. The book can be read and understood at multiple levels, from learning what each theory is about to appreciating the more subtle implications of their differences for firms and society. Despite the complexity of the subject, the book is an easy and enjoyable read. It is written in a lively, user-friendly style, with many illustrated examples. William G. Egelhoff, Fordham University, US In most accounts, especially in the journal literature, the theory of international business is seen as evolving steadily through the incremental addition of a series of largely complementary analytical building blocks. Mats Forsgren sees instead a set of conflicting perspectives on the subject. In this valuable contribution he breaks down theoretical complexity in this field into its distinctive parts. He thereby gives us a better understanding of how these parts relate to one another or don t. John Cantwell, Rutgers University, US This excellent book deals with six theoretical approaches to the multinational firm, its activities and organization. The theories and their implications are explained and contrasted with each other. The clear and concise treatment of theories makes the work very useful for students, while its critical and comparative analysis can be a source of ideas for further developments by researchers. I highly recommend the book for students, teachers and researchers. Grazia Ietto-Gillies, London South Bank University, UK This timely textbook presents the assumptions and theories behind contemporary views on the multinational firm as an organization and as an actor in the global economy. Mats Forsgren analyzes and compares six different theories of the multinational firm from the dominating multinational to the politicizing multinational that have dominated the research in international business during the last four decades. Mats Forsgren reveals the basic building blocks and assumptions behind each theory in order to reach a better understanding of why the multinational firm is looked upon in so many different ways by researchers and stakeholders. This important textbook will be an invaluable resource for both undergraduate and postgraduate students on international business, international management and international economy courses.
