Download or read book Comparative Constitutionalism written by A. V. Dicey and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a complement to Dicey's The Law of the Constitution. These largely unpublished comparative constitutional lectures were written for different versions of a comparative constitutional book that Dicey began but did not finish prior to his death in 1922. The lectures were a pioneering venture into comparative constitutionalism and reveal an approach to legal education broader than Dicey is widely understood to have taken. Topics discussed include English, French, American, and Prussian constitutionalism; the separation of powers; representative government; and federalism. The volume begins with an editorial introduction examining the implications of these comparative lectures and Dicey's early foray into comparative constitutionalism for his general constitutional thought, and the kinds of response it has elicited.

Download or read book A History of Indiana State University written by Dan Clark and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865, Indiana State University began classes as many other future regional state universities would: as a "normal school," a school that specialized in training teachers, usually in one- or two-year programs. By 1933, Indiana State had won the name Teachers College and had begun offering graduate-level education. In A History of Indiana State University, Dan Clark explores the history of Indiana State's institutional transformation against the backdrop of the amazing expansion of public education and the scope of higher education in the United States during this period. Starting with the origins of the normal school and the need for professional teachers to help construct the educational infrastructure of Indiana, Clark examines how the faculty and students pushed the school to conform to increasingly popular traditional collegiate ideals, broadening their curriculum and student extracurricular life (athletics and Greek life), until by the 1920s Indiana State had transformed itself into a teachers college. A History of Indiana State University offers an invaluable guide to the history of this beloved Indiana institution, and details the underappreciated impact that normal schools had in providing an educational opportunity to less privileged aspiring students.

Download or read book Studies in Indo Muslim History by S H Hodivala Volume II written by Sanjay Garg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of medieval Indian historiography, an eight-volume magnum opus, History of India as Told by Its Own Historians, by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers, John Dowson (1820-81), was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later, and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However, an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar, S.H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson’s volumes and worked through all the new material, selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala’s annotated Studies, was published in 1939, while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years, while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints, and is even available online now, Hodivala’s volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work, Hobson-Jobson (London, 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both, Elliot and Dowson’s, and for Yule and Burnell’s excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. Download or read book Tragedy and Triumph on the Great Lakes written by Richard Gebhart and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Gebhart traces little-known voyages of Great Lakes ships that sailed the Atlantic beginning in the 1850s. They bore cargoes to and from the lakes and as far as Constantinople. Gebhart recovers the voices of long-ago ship captains, along with their cargo manifests and itineraries. Drawing on deep research in old newspapers and maritime archives, he traces the construction of new ships and shipyards, and the comings and goings and travails of the lakes’ workhorses. Included is a mournful visit to a boneyard where many ships’ lives ended. Among many other lost tales, Gebhart brings to light the rise of oil tankers, marking the great twentieth-century energy transition in shipping. A must-read for Great Lakes shipping fans.
