Download or read book Restoring Financial Stability written by New York University Stern School of Business and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful look at how to reform our broken financial system The financial crisis that unfolded in September 2008 transformed the United States and world economies. As each day's headlines brought stories of bank failures and rescues, government policies drawn and redrawn against the backdrop of an historic Presidential election, and solutions that seemed to be discarded almost as soon as they were proposed, a group of thirty-three academics at New York University Stern School of Business began tackling the hard questions behind the headlines. Representing fields of finance, economics, and accounting, these professors-led by Dean Thomas Cooley and Vice Dean Ingo Walter-shaped eighteen independent policy papers that proposed market-focused solutions to the problems within a common framework. In December, with great urgency, they sent hand-bound copies to Washington. Restoring Financial Stability is the culmination of their work. Proposes bold, yet principled approaches-including financial policy alternatives and specific courses of action-to deal with this unprecedented, systemic financial crisis Created by the contributions of various academics from New York University's Stern School of Business Provides important perspectives on both the causes of the global financial crisis as well as proposed solutions to ensure it doesn't happen again Contains detailed evaluations and analyses covering many spectrums of the marketplace Edited by Matthew Richardson and Viral Acharya, this reliable resource brings together the best thinking of finance and economics from the faculty of one of the top universities in world.

Book Banking on the Future

Download or read book Banking on the Future written by Howard Davies and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inside look at the role and future of central banking in the global economy The crash of 2008 revealed that the world's central banks had failed to offset the financial imbalances that led to the crisis, and lacked the tools to respond effectively. What lessons should central banks learn from the experience, and how, in a global financial system, should cooperation between them be enhanced? Banking on the Future provides a fascinating insider's look into how central banks have evolved and why they are critical to the functioning of market economies. The book asks whether, in light of the recent economic fallout, the central banking model needs radical reform. Supported by interviews with leading central bankers from around the world, and informed by the latest academic research, Banking on the Future considers such current issues as the place of asset prices and credit growth in anti-inflation policy, the appropriate role for central banks in banking supervision, the ways in which central banks provide liquidity to markets, the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of central banks, the culture and individuals working in these institutions, as well as the particular issues facing emerging markets and Islamic finance. Howard Davies and David Green set out detailed policy recommendations, including a reformulation of monetary policy, better metrics for financial stability, closer links with regulators, and a stronger emphasis on international cooperation. Exploring a crucial sector of the global economic system, Banking on the Future offers new ideas for restoring financial strength to the foundations of central banking.

Book Equivalence in Financial Services

Download or read book Equivalence in Financial Services written by Francesco Pennesi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equivalence in Financial Services offers a comprehensive and cross-industry examination of the rules and procedures under EU financial legislation dedicated to third-country market actors. The equivalence regime has become particularly topical after Brexit, as the United Kingdom is now a third country from the perspective of the European Union. This book investigates whether the current equivalence system is fit for its purpose, namely facilitating cross-border finance while minimizing as extensively as possible financial risks. After describing how the European Commission adopts equivalence measures, the book examines the implementation of the equivalence regime for the following entities: Credit Rating Agencies, Benchmarks, Trading Venues, Investment Firms, Investment Funds, Central Securities Depositories, Trade Repositories, and Central Counterparties. Addressing the most recent policy and legal developments, Equivalence in Financial Services provides an insightful guide into this complex area of financial regulation for scholars of financial regulation, legal practitioners, and policy makers.

Book Global Financial Regulation

Download or read book Global Financial Regulation written by Howard Davies and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As international financial markets have become more complex, so has the regulatory system which oversees them. The Basel Committee is just one of a plethora of international bodies and groupings which now set standards for financial activity around the world, in the interests of protecting savers and investors and maintaining financial stability. These groupings, and their decisions, have a major impact on markets in developed and developing countries, and on competition between financial firms. Yet their workings are shrouded in mystery, and their legitimacy is uncertain. Here, for the first time, two men who have worked within the system describe its origins and development in clear and accessible terms. Howard Davies was the first Chairman of the UK's Financial Services Authority, the single regulator for the whole of Britain's financial sector. David Green was Head of International Policy at the FSA, after spending thirty years in the Bank of England, and has been closely associated with the development of the current European regulatory arrangements. Now with a revised and updated introduction, which catalogues the changes made since the credit crisis erupted, this guide to the international system will be invaluable for regulators, financial market practitioners and for students of the global financial system, wherever they are located. The book shows how the system has been challenged by new financial instruments and by new types of institutions such as hedge funds and private equity. Furthermore, the growth in importance of major developing countries, who were excluded for far too long from the key decision-making for a has led to a major overhaul. The guide is essential reading for all those interested in the development of financial markets and the way they are regulated. The revised version is only available in paperback.

Download or read book Banking Reform written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Treasury Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report follows on from the Committee's report on the crisis at Northern Rock (5th report, HC 56-I, ISBN 9780215038388) and the lessons to be learned by the Treasury, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and the Bank of England (the Tripartite authorities). It examines legislative and practical changes that are needed. The overall case for legislative action in the field of banking regulation is compelling but the Government's preparations for new legislation may not be in place by late February 2009. The Committee recommends that the legislation provides: greater clarity about the nature and objective of "heightened supervision"; an explicit statutory power for the Bank of England to recommend to the FSA that a firm be made subject to the new Special Resolution Regime; a clear institutional separation between the executive functions of the Bank and the non-executive role of the Court of the Bank of England. Practical measures should include: the strengthening FSA's capacity to regulate; the Tripartite authorities must develop a communications strategy to secure public and market confidence in their new powers; and depositor protection arrangements must be developed which will function smoothly and effectively in the event of a bank failure. The Committee makes recommendations on "heightened supervision" and the Special Resolution Regime, identifies priorities for reform of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme to protect depositors, and sets out proposals for strengthening the Bank of England. The new Tripartite Standing Committee must assume a central and continuing role in the financial stability work of the authorities at all time.

Book Retail Depositor and Retail Investor Protection under EU Law

Download or read book Retail Depositor and Retail Investor Protection under EU Law written by Constantinos Tokatlides and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retail Depositor and Retail Investor Protection under EU Law offers an original perspective on EU financial law in the area of retail investor protection, examining the status of protection awarded by EU law to retail depositors and retail investors in the event of financial institution failure. The analysis of relevant EU law is on the basis of effectiveness and has been elaborated in two levels of comparison. The first comparative approach examines relevant EU law both externally and internally: externally, vis-à-vis relevant international initiatives and developments in the area of financial law, as the latter affect the features and evolution of EU law, and internally by examining relevant instruments of EU law with regard to each other as to their normative structure and content. The second comparative approach also examines the status of retail depositors in relation to that of retail investors under EU law, in the event of financial institution failure, and the relevant legal consequences thereof.

Book Critique of the New Consensus Macroeconomics and Implications for India

Download or read book Critique of the New Consensus Macroeconomics and Implications for India written by Dilip M. Nachane and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thought-provoking book presents alternative viewpoints to mainstream macroeconomic theory, questions conventional policy wisdom and suggests a systematic re-orientation of current macroeconomic and financial regulatory policies in India. The New Consensus Macroeconomics (NCM), which established itself in the 1980s as mainstream macroeconomics, essentially represents an “uneasy truce” between two dominant schools of economic thought viz. New Classical and Neo-Keynesian economics. The NCM sets the tone for much of the macroeconomic (especially monetary) policy followed by the advanced economies in the period of the Great Moderation (1990–2005). The recent global crisis has posed a major challenge to the NCM as empirical models based on the NCM failed to anticipate the occurrence of the crisis and later its extent and severity. The above considerations constitute the underpinnings of this book, which addresses the theoretical controversies within a general context and their policy implications for India. The authors’ analysis leads to a somewhat critical assessment of the financial sector policies followed in India since the initiation of reforms in 1991. This makes the book a valuable resource not only for researchers working in this area, but also for policy makers.
