Book excerpt: A large part of Howell's time in Venice was given up to a critical study of life in that city, and in his "Venetian Life," which appeared in 1866, he has given to the world the result of his observation and study. The book abounds in dainty pen pictures of the beauties of Venice ; as he tells us of the Grand canal, we can almost hear the dipping paddles of passing gondolas, and the barcarolle wafted on the evening breeze. It may seem almost sacrilege to lovers of the old legends, that he explains away the romanticism of the Doge's palace, and denominates the Bridge of Sighs a " pathetic swindle". The book's finish was such as to reveal the highly interesting literary individuality of the author.

This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 1622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection of William Dean Howells' complete travel books has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards. Extract: "Nothing can be fairer to the eye than these "summer isles of Eden" lying all about Venice, far and near. The water forever trembles and changes, with every change of light, from one rainbow glory to another, as with the restless hues of an opal; and even when the splendid tides recede, and go down with the sea, they leave a heritage of beauty to the empurpled mud of the shallows, all strewn with green, disheveled sea-weed. The lagoons have almost as wide a bound as your vision." William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author, literary critic, and playwright. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day", and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. Howells is known to be the father of American realism, and a denouncer of the sentimental novel. He was the first American author to bring a realist aesthetic to the literature of the United States. His stories of Boston upper crust life set in the 1850s are highly regarded among scholars of American fiction. After short campaign in Republican administration, Howells was appointed a consul in Venice in 1861. He remained in Italy for 4 years and during this time he wrote travel sketches and reports describing life in town and country. Later on, he came back to Europe, which resulted in few more travel books to his name. Book excerpt: This book explores the history of Venice, a State unparalleled in Europe for permanence and stability. For centuries Venice occupied that position of maritime supremacy now held by Great Britain, and time was when an English king was fain to crave the loan of a few warships to vindicate his rights in France. The autonomy of the Venetian Republic was so imposed on men's minds that it was regarded as in the very nature of things, and even so acute an observer as Voltaire wrote in the Dictionnaire Philosophique, less than three decades before her fall: "Venice has preserved her independence during eleven centuries, and I flatter myself will preserve it forever." In this book, the author has freely drawn from the old chronicles, while not neglecting modern historians, the chiefest of whom is the Triestine Hebrew scholar, Samuele Romanin...For purposes of description in this book, the author divided the city and outlying islands of the Venetian lagoon into twenty sections, arranged rather concerning their relative historical and artistic importance than to strict topographical considerations, although these have not been lost sight of.

Book Brokers of Public Trust

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laurie Nussdorfer
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2009-11-16
  • ISBN : 080189509X

Download or read book Brokers of Public Trust written by Laurie Nussdorfer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fast-growing legal system and economy in medieval and early modern Rome saw a rapid increase in the need for written documents. Brokers of Public Trust examines the emergence of the modern notarial profession—free market scribes responsible for producing original legal documents and their copies. Notarial acts often go unnoticed, but they are essential to understanding the history of writing practices and attitudes toward official documentation. Based on new archival research, Brokers of Public Trust focuses on the government officials, notaries, and consumers who regulated, wrote, and purchased notarial documents in Rome between the 14th and 18th centuries. Historian Laurie Nussdorfer chronicles the training of professional notaries and the construction of public archives, explaining why notarial documents exist, who made them, and how they came to be regarded as authoritative evidence. In doing so, Nussdorfer describes a profession of crucial importance to the people and government of the time, as well as to scholars who turn to notarial documents as invaluable and irreplaceable historical sources. This magisterial new work brings fresh insight into the essential functions of early modern Roman society and the development of the modern state.

Book The Greeks of Venice 1498 1600

Download or read book The Greeks of Venice 1498 1600 written by Ersie C. Burke and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume traces the history of Venice's Greek population during the formative years between 1498 and 1600 when thousands left their homelands for Venice. It describes how Greeks established new communal and social networks, and follows their transition from outsiders to insiders (though not quite Venetians) through an approach that offers a comparative perspective between the 'native' and the immigrant. It places Greeks within the context of multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-lingual Venice.
