Book John Paul Jones

Download or read book John Paul Jones written by Evan Thomas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller from master biographer Evan Thomas brings to life the tumultuous story of the father of the American Navy. John Paul Jones, at sea and in the heat of the battle, was the great American hero of the Age of Sail. He was to history what Patrick O’Brian’s Jack Aubrey and C.S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower are to fiction. Ruthless, indomitable, clever; he vowed to sail, as he put it, “in harm’s way.” Evan Thomas’s minute-by-minute re-creation of the bloodbath between Jones’s Bonhomme Richard and the British man-of-war Serapis off the coast of England on an autumn night in 1779 is as gripping a sea battle as can be found in any novel. Drawing on Jones’s correspondence with some of the most significant figures of the American Revolution—John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson—Thomas’s biography teaches us that it took fighters as well as thinkers, men driven by dreams of personal glory as well as high-minded principle, to break free of the past and start a new world. Jones’s spirit was classically American.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Facts About John Paul Jones Thanks to the generous and untiring zeal Of our late ambas sador to France, the grave of John Paul Jones has recently been discovered in Paris, and his remains have been removed by the governrrient to this country for interment at Annapolis. This discovery has revived the interest which our people have always taken in the career of this illustrious captain Of the seas, and has of late provoked much discussion in the maga zines and newspapers Of the various incidents in his life, and, in particular, of the reason for his change of name. The reason for this change of name has ever been a puzzle to his biographers. Most Of them pass it by with the mere state ment that he changed his name for unknown reasons. Some few attempt to account for it upon theories, which, while they may be plausible, yet do not appeal to the intelli gent reader. Of these there are three, which perhaps seem most plausible, and which, one or another, are generally accepted as true by most people. I will proceed to give these, and the reasons which occur to me for rejecting them as nu sound an-d without anything but conjecture to support them. Book John Paul Jones

Download or read book John Paul Jones written by Joseph F Callo and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Samuel Eliot Morrison Award for Excellence in Naval Literature. This fresh look at America's first sea warrior avoids both the hero worship of the past and the recent, inaccurate deconstructionist views of John Paul Jones's astonishing life. The author goes beyond a narrow naval context to establish Jones as a key player in the American Revolution, something not done by previous biographers, and explains what drove him to his achievements. At the same time, Admiral Joseph Callo fully examines Jones's dramatic military achievements—including his improbable victory off Flamborough Head in the Continental ship Bonhomme Richard—but in the context of the times rather than as stand-alone events. The book also looks at some interesting but lesser-known aspects of Jones's naval career, including his relationships with such civilian leaders as Benjamin Franklin. How Jones handled those often-difficult dealings, Callo maintains, contributed to the nation's concept of civilian control of the military. Suggesting that Jones might well be the first U.S. apostle of sea power, the author also focuses on the fact that Jones was the first serving American naval officer who emphasized the role naval power would play in the rise of the United States as a global power. Another neglected aspect of Jones's career that gets attention and analysis is his brief tour in the Russian navy, a revealing chapter of his life that has been underreported in the two hundred years since Jones's death. Rather than looking at Jones in a rearview mirror, Callo illuminates how this unique naval hero is linked to the nation's present and future. As a result, he gives us a sea saga that tells much about our own lives and times.

Supreme Court, the late Afathew Carey, Esq., of Philadelphia, and the lion. William A. Graham, Secretary of the Navy, to the Author, relative to Paul Jones. Monticello, February 14, 1825. Dear Sir, During my residence in ParU, I was much acquainted with Commodore John Paul Jones, whose life you propose to write, and had much to do with him; yet my memory i - so decayed that from that source I can furnish you nothing worth a place in his history. I believe I cannot better comply with your request than by sending you all the papers relating to him in my possession. His letters to me, which are many, will probably throw some lights, which you may not possess, on his occupation daring that period. His death happened after I left Paris, and I presume you know that the National Assembly, then sitting, expressed their respect for him by wearing mourning. I shall be glad if what I furnish may add anything to the establishment of that fame which he truly merited. Be pleased to accept for yourself the assurance of my great respect, THOMAS JEFFERSON. Montpelier, April 28, 1825. Dear Sir, I have received your letter of the 23d instant, inclosing a copy of your prospectus of a biography of John Paul Janes. The subject you have chosen for your pen, gives you an opportunity of doing justice to an individual whose heroiim will fill a brilliant page in the history of the American Revolution. I am sorry it is not in my power to add to the materials you have derived from other fources. I must regret, also, that my personal acquaintance with Captain Jones was so slight and transient, that I ought not to attempt a view of his character. His bust, by Houdon, is an exact li...
