Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Land Question The following pages are offered, in an impartial spirit, as a contribution towards the settlement of the Irish Land Question. In 1849, favoured by the introduction of the late Sir Robert Peel, I visited Ireland, then prostrate from the famine, and carefully examined the agricultural condition of the country. In Parliament I have since had many opportunities, both in the House and in Committees, of considering the subject. And during the present year, in a recent visit to Ireland, I traversed a large part of that country, embracing portions of each province, - from Dublin to Tralee and Sligo, and from Cork to Londonderry, - and had very ample opportunities of discussing the question, and of eliciting the views of men of all shades of opinion. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Digest of Evidence Taken Before Her Majesty's Commissioners of Inquiry Into the State of the Law and Practice in Respect to the Occupation of Land in Ireland, Vol. 2 The valuation of land in Ireland, whether with a view to public assessment or to the framing of bargains between the owners and the occupiers of land, is certainly one of the most important subjects affecting the interests of all classes in the community, because it must be the principal regulator of all our social arrangements. If the basis adopted were sound, uniform, and generally understood, there could be no confusion or misapprehension as to the claims or rights of the classes or parties interested; and the acknowledged existence of such confusion is in itself a sufficient proof that there must have been something very defective indeed in the practice generally adopted heretofore. The satisfactory valuation of land does not consist in merely fixing the yearly price which a tenant is to pay for each acre of his farm. It depends upon being able to prove, by minute details, to both the parties interested, that that price is the right one, under all the circumstances of the case; and that in fixing it their respective rights have been strictly protected. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause of Ireland, Pleaded Before the Civilized World No Irish-American who has followed, with anything like a kindly interest, the sufferings and struggles of the Irish at home during the last fifty years, but must have asked himself if these sufferings were never to end, or if such struggles were, at length, to be crowned by the long-prayed-for success. Yes - we have been long waiting, in our free homes beyond the Atlantic, for the end of these awful trials, prolonged century after century down to the present year, and borne with a fortitude and a hopefulness, which speak more eloquently than inspired voice or pen for the heroic temper of the Irish soul. We have contributed by word and deed, as the trial deepened, and the struggle became ever fiercer, to soothe the suffering whose source we were powerless to remove, and to aid the brave men and true who were battling for the cause of the Martyr-Nation. Book Ireland and the Classical World

Download or read book Ireland and the Classical World written by Philip Freeman and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Intriguing . . . This volume explores the evidence regarding Greek and (mostly) Roman knowledge of Ireland during the classical period.” —Bryn Mawr Classical Review On the boundary of what the ancient Greeks and Romans considered the habitable world, Ireland was a land of myth and mystery in classical times. Classical authors frequently portrayed its people as savages—even as cannibals and devotees of incest—and evinced occasional uncertainty as to the island’s shape, size, and actual location. Unlike neighboring Britain, Ireland never knew Roman occupation, yet literary and archaeological evidence prove that Iuverna was more than simply terra incognita in classical antiquity. In this book, Philip Freeman explores the relations between ancient Ireland and the classical world through a comprehensive survey of all Greek and Latin literary sources that mention Ireland. He analyzes passages (given in both the original language and English) from over thirty authors, including Julius Caesar, Strabo, Tacitus, Ptolemy, and St. Jerome. To amplify the literary sources, he also briefly reviews the archaeological and linguistic evidence for contact between Ireland and the Mediterranean world. Freeman’s analysis of all these sources reveals that Ireland was known to the Greeks and Romans for hundreds of years and that Mediterranean goods and even travelers found their way to Ireland, while the Irish at least occasionally visited, traded, and raided in Roman lands. Everyone interested in ancient Irish history or Classics, whether scholar or enthusiast, will learn much from this pioneering book. “A work of rigorous scholarship based on meticulous research, but the author’s prose is as effortless as it is enthusiastic.” —American Journal of Archaeology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1800 to 1922 the Irish Question was the most emotional and divisive issue in British politics. It pitted Westminster politicians, anti-Catholic British public opinion, and Irish Protestant and Presbyterian champions of the Union against the determination of Ireland's large Catholic majority to obtain civil rights, economic justice, and cultural and political independence. In this completely revised and updated edition of The Irish Question, Lawrence J. McCaffrey extends his classic analysis of Irish nationalism to the present day. He makes clear the tortured history of British-Irish relations and offers insight into the difficulties now facing those who hope to create a permanent peace in Northern Ireland.
