Book excerpt: Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book A Treatise on Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Michael Donovan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Chemistry The quantity of matter of a body is, then, determined by its quantity of inertia; and two bodies are said to have equal quantities of matter, when they have equal inertia. If the quantity of matter in one body is said to be twice the quantity of matter in another, the meaning is, that one has twice the inertia of the other or, that to give it the same motion will require twice the de gree of impelling force.* The mass of matter, or the mass of a body, is also a term of frequent use. This word mass is to be understood as synonymous with quan tity the mass of a body is, therefore, the quantity of matter in the body. Download or read book A Treatise on the Principles of Chemistry Classic Reprint written by M. M. Pattison Muir and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Principles of Chemistry It is addressed to students of this science who have already a considerable acquaintance with descriptive che mistry, but it is hoped that by such students the book will be found complete in itself; so that while it certainly deals with chemical principles and theories on the supposition that its readers have some knowledge of chemical facts, yet the book may fairly claim to rank as a systematic treatise on chemical philosophy. While I have tried to supply full information regarding those points which appear to me of most importance, I have also sought to avoid great detail, and to present a sketch of the principles of chemistry the parts of which shall hang together as being mutually dependent. Book An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics

Download or read book An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics written by Terrell L. Hill and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A large number of exercises of a broad range of difficulty make this book even more useful…a good addition to the literature on thermodynamics at the undergraduate level." — Philosophical Magazine Although written on an introductory level, this wide-ranging text provides extensive coverage of topics of current interest in equilibrium statistical mechanics. Indeed, certain traditional topics are given somewhat condensed treatment to allow room for a survey of more recent advances. The book is divided into four major sections. Part I deals with the principles of quantum statistical mechanics and includes discussions of energy levels, states and eigenfunctions, degeneracy and other topics. Part II examines systems composed of independent molecules or of other independent subsystems. Topics range from ideal monatomic gas and monatomic crystals to polyatomic gas and configuration of polymer molecules and rubber elasticity. An examination of systems of interacting molecules comprises the nine chapters in Part Ill, reviewing such subjects as lattice statistics, imperfect gases and dilute liquid solutions. Part IV covers quantum statistics and includes sections on Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics, photon gas and free-volume theories of quantum liquids. Each chapter includes problems varying in difficulty — ranging from simple numerical exercises to small-scale "research" propositions. In addition, supplementary reading lists for each chapter invite students to pursue the subject at a more advanced level. Readers are assumed to have studied thermodynamics, calculus, elementary differential equations and elementary quantum mechanics. Because of the flexibility of the chapter arrangements, this book especially lends itself to use in a one-or two-semester graduate course in chemistry, a one-semester senior or graduate course in physics or an introductory course in statistical mechanics.

Book Group Theory and Its Application to Physical Problems

Download or read book Group Theory and Its Application to Physical Problems written by Morton Hamermesh and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A remarkably intelligible survey . . . well organized, well written and very clear throughout." — Mathematical Reviews This excellent text, long considered one of the best-written, most skillful expositions of group theory and its physical applications, is directed primarily to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in physics, especially quantum physics. No knowledge of group theory is assumed, but the reader is expected to be familiar with quantum mechanics. And while much of the book concerns theory, readers will nevertheless find a large number of physical applications in the fields of crystallography, molecular theory, and atomic and nuclear physics. The first seven chapters of the book are concerned with finite groups, focusing on the central role of the symmetric group. This section concludes with a chapter dealing with the problem of determining group characters, as it discusses Young tableaux, Yamanouchi symbols, and the method of Hund. The remaining five chapters discuss continuous groups, particularly Lie groups, with the final chapter devoted to the ray representation of Lie groups. The author, Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Minnesota, has included a generous selection of problems. They are inserted throughout the text at the place where they naturally arise, making the book ideal for self-study as well as for classroom assignment. 77 illustrations. "A very welcome addition to [the] literature. . . . I would warmly recommend the book to all serious students of Group Theory as applied to Physics." — Contemporary Physics. Index. Bibliography. Problems. Tables.
