Download or read book Some Current Folk Songs of the Negro Classic Reprint written by W. H. Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Current Folk-Songs of the Negro Now that this brochure is being reprinted by the Texas Folk Lore Society, I take the opportunity to say a word concerning its author and its history. Although not a numbered publication, Some Current Folk Songs of the Negro (1912) was the first item produced by the Texas folk-lore Society. At the time dues to the Society were two-bits a year - not enough to allow a very extensive publication. Number I (now reprinted under the title of Round the Levee) was not issued until 1916; then it was seven more years before another volume was issued, since which time, 1923, the Society has sent out a book annually to its members. The credit for initiating the Society's policy of recording the lore of Texas and the Southwest belongs to Will H. Thomas. At the time his pamphlet was issued, he was president of the organization, to which office he was elected again in 1923. His idea was that people who work with folk-lore should not only col lect it but interpret it and also enjoy it. This view is expressed in his delightful essay on The Decline and Decadence of Folk Metaphor, in Publications Number II (coffee in the Gourd) of the Society. Book Religious Folk Songs of the Southern Negroes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Religious Folk Songs of the Southern Negroes Classic Reprint written by Howard W. Odum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Folk-Songs of the Southern Negroes The religious songs of the negro have commonly been accepted as characteristic music of the race. The name spirituals' given them long years ago is still current, while these songs, composed by the negroes, and passing from generation to generation with numerous modifications, retain many of their former characteristics. In former days the spirituals were judged to be the most beautiful produc tion of the race and the truest representation of the negro 's real self. Some of these songs have been published, and for a time their emo tional beauty and simplicity of expression won for the negro a definite place in the hearts of those who had not hitherto known him. He was often judged by these songs alone, reported only imperfectly and superficially, and forthwith came many expressions of delight and en thusiasm for the future possibilities of the negro. These expressions indicate not only the power of the singing of negro spirituals upon those who heard them, but also many of the characteristics of the old and present-day spirituals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Negro Folk-Songs, Vol. 3 of 4: Books I-II, Spirituals; Books III-IV, Work-and Play-Songs The question was eagerly put by a young German musician who was visiting the Hampton Institute in Virginia and for the first time heard the great chorus of nine hundred colored students sing the Plantations, as the Negroes call the old melodies that had their birth in days of slavery - religious songs that were the voice of the bondsman's soul. From a technical as well as purely musical standpoint the extraordinary unity, the precision in attack and the faultless pitch of the Negro singers impelled the musician's query. And my answer baffled him: Why, no one trains these Negro boys and girls, their singing is natural. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Negro Folk-Songs, Vol. 4 of 4: Books I-II, Spirituals, Books III-IV, Work-and Play-Songs It was spirited singing and it was devout; but the inspirational quality of the group-feeling made this music seem a lambent, living thing, a bit of divine fire that descended upon these black people like the gift of tongues. It was as though the song had first hovered in the trees above their swaying forms, intangible, till one of them had reached up and seized it, and then it had spread like flame. And as usual with Negroes, this was extemporaneous part-singing, - women making up alto, men improvising tenor or bass, the music as a whole possessed so completely by them all (or so utterly possessing them!) that they were free to abandon themselves to the inspiration of their own creative instinct. Book Negro Workaday Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Negro Workaday Songs Classic Reprint written by Howard Washington Odum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Negro Workaday Songs Since this volume presents a series of pictures of the Negro as portrayed through his workaday songs it is Important that all chapters be read before any final judgment is made. Even then 'the picture will not be complete. It has not been possible, of course, to make any complete or accurate classification of the songs. They overlap and repeat. They borrow sentiment and expression and repay freely. Free labor song becomes prison song, and chain gang melody turns to pick-and Shovel accompaniment. The chapter divisions, there fore, are made with the idea of approximating a usable classification and providing such mechanical divisions as will facilitate the best possible presentation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro and His Songs: A Study of Typical Negro Songs in the SouthJeffries, dwelling on the mystery and beauty of the flesh, on the sensitive elegance of nature and the soul, or like Wordsworth's man-to-man poet, there will be many who dissent from such a judgment of crude creative effort. For there abounds much coarseness. Well it is-that this collection has no duty to evaluate overweening physical expression alongside spiritual aspiration, to judge whether buttercups are grazing grass or the substance of sun-spilt immortal gold! Other contrasts there are: stately measures and broken rhythm, forced triseme and ragged trochee, illogical asyndeton and mixed meters, and such other untamed technique as will undoubtedly do justice to the singer of the songs.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This anthology was compiled to aid the scholar working on the origins and evolution of jazz. Covering materials published through 1929, it also begins with article from 1859 which do not concern jazz directly, but will serve to present a solid foundation for understanding the American music scene from which jazz developed. Chronologically listed and well-indexed, the hundreds of articles comprise, in effect, a history of jazz as it evolved. Beginning with accounts of Negro music in the pre-jazz era, continuing in an exploration of spirituals, followed by a description of ragtime, we finally learn about the development of jazz from its practitioners and informed audiences of the time.
