Book Some Contributions to Semi supervised Learning

Download or read book Some Contributions to Semi supervised Learning written by Samuel J. Frame and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis makes some contributions to the topic of semi-supervised learning. We begin with two applications which motivate this work. After discussing the theoretical background, Generalized Mixture Models (GMMs) are introduced, and a survey of existing semi-supervised learning methods is provided. We present an alternative formulation of GMMs and discuss the corresponding learning procedure. Our primary focus is to develop a Bayesian semi-supervised learning alternative to the maximum likelihood approach for learning GMMs. This includes an adaptation of birth/death processes to learn the model dimension. The statistical computing aspect of this work is a large focus of the research. All of the software that is used to test and compare these methods is developed from the beginning. Using simulated data, we are able to compare the learning strategies. For a wide variety of situations, we demonstrate that both learning methods provide accurate and comparable parameter estimates. Because GMMs are a relatively recent innovation, much of the material in this dissertation can serve as a starting point for further research, and we conclude by mentioning a few possible avenues for such research.

Book Semi Supervised Learning

Download or read book Semi Supervised Learning written by Olivier Chapelle and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-01-22 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of an area of machine learning that deals with the use of unlabeled data in classification problems: state-of-the-art algorithms, a taxonomy of the field, applications, benchmark experiments, and directions for future research. In the field of machine learning, semi-supervised learning (SSL) occupies the middle ground, between supervised learning (in which all training examples are labeled) and unsupervised learning (in which no label data are given). Interest in SSL has increased in recent years, particularly because of application domains in which unlabeled data are plentiful, such as images, text, and bioinformatics. This first comprehensive overview of SSL presents state-of-the-art algorithms, a taxonomy of the field, selected applications, benchmark experiments, and perspectives on ongoing and future research.Semi-Supervised Learning first presents the key assumptions and ideas underlying the field: smoothness, cluster or low-density separation, manifold structure, and transduction. The core of the book is the presentation of SSL methods, organized according to algorithmic strategies. After an examination of generative models, the book describes algorithms that implement the low-density separation assumption, graph-based methods, and algorithms that perform two-step learning. The book then discusses SSL applications and offers guidelines for SSL practitioners by analyzing the results of extensive benchmark experiments. Finally, the book looks at interesting directions for SSL research. The book closes with a discussion of the relationship between semi-supervised learning and transduction.

Book Introduction to Semi Supervised Learning

Download or read book Introduction to Semi Supervised Learning written by Xiaojin Geffner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semi-supervised learning is a learning paradigm concerned with the study of how computers and natural systems such as humans learn in the presence of both labeled and unlabeled data. Traditionally, learning has been studied either in the unsupervised paradigm (e.g., clustering, outlier detection) where all the data are unlabeled, or in the supervised paradigm (e.g., classification, regression) where all the data are labeled. The goal of semi-supervised learning is to understand how combining labeled and unlabeled data may change the learning behavior, and design algorithms that take advantage of such a combination. Semi-supervised learning is of great interest in machine learning and data mining because it can use readily available unlabeled data to improve supervised learning tasks when the labeled data are scarce or expensive. Semi-supervised learning also shows potential as a quantitative tool to understand human category learning, where most of the input is self-evidently unlabeled. In this introductory book, we present some popular semi-supervised learning models, including self-training, mixture models, co-training and multiview learning, graph-based methods, and semi-supervised support vector machines. For each model, we discuss its basic mathematical formulation. The success of semi-supervised learning depends critically on some underlying assumptions. We emphasize the assumptions made by each model and give counterexamples when appropriate to demonstrate the limitations of the different models. In addition, we discuss semi-supervised learning for cognitive psychology. Finally, we give a computational learning theoretic perspective on semi-supervised learning, and we conclude the book with a brief discussion of open questions in the field. Book Graph Based Semi Supervised Learning

Download or read book Graph Based Semi Supervised Learning written by Amarnag Lipovetzky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While labeled data is expensive to prepare, ever increasing amounts of unlabeled data is becoming widely available. In order to adapt to this phenomenon, several semi-supervised learning (SSL) algorithms, which learn from labeled as well as unlabeled data, have been developed. In a separate line of work, researchers have started to realize that graphs provide a natural way to represent data in a variety of domains. Graph-based SSL algorithms, which bring together these two lines of work, have been shown to outperform the state-of-the-art in many applications in speech processing, computer vision, natural language processing, and other areas of Artificial Intelligence. Recognizing this promising and emerging area of research, this synthesis lecture focuses on graph-based SSL algorithms (e.g., label propagation methods). Our hope is that after reading this book, the reader will walk away with the following: (1) an in-depth knowledge of the current state-of-the-art in graph-based SSL algorithms, and the ability to implement them; (2) the ability to decide on the suitability of graph-based SSL methods for a problem; and (3) familiarity with different applications where graph-based SSL methods have been successfully applied.
