Book Reflections of a Camp Fire Survivor

Download or read book Reflections of a Camp Fire Survivor written by Michael Lovinfosse and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 8, 2018, a fire started in Northern California that consumed the towns of Paradise and Magalia. This fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history. I spent eight harrowing days trapped at my home in Magalia waiting for the fire to be contained. I evaluated and chose what few personal items I could load into my truck and save. The loss of public utilities and isolation by the fire left me with time on my hands. I had always planned to publish a book with some prose or poetry. I went through my file cabinets and took out several folders with my original poetry and song lyrics. Without the internet, phone service, electricity, or running water, I began to work on my first book of poetry by candlelight. There are three sections to this book. The first section, "Music, Poetry, & Life", reveals my childhood experiences that led to a love of music, poetry, and a lifelong fellowship with like-minded musicians. The second section, "Poetry", consists of fifty-two of my poems, which are the basis for various song lyrics. The third section, "The Camp Fire Experience", is a day-to-day account of my adventures during the Camp Fire (which influenced the creation of this book). I hope you can find something interesting or thought-provoking within.

Download or read book The Seasons Of Fire written by David J. Strohmaier and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire is a fearsome constant in the America West. As the author David J. Strohmaier notes, "Whether we have tended a campfire along Oregon's Deschutes River in March, engaged the advancing front of a Great Basin wildfire in the torrid heat of August, or watched fire settle into the subdued, smoldering leaf piles of October, all of our lives, to one degree or another, are bracketed by fire." In The Seasons of Fire, Strohmaier effectively blends nature writing, personal essay, and philosophical analysis as he deliberately crosses disciplinary boundaries. He discusses the "moral" dimensions of fire—not only whether fires are good, bad, or indifferent phenomena, but also how fire, more generally understood, shapes meaning for human life. The consequences of discussing the moral side of fire speak directly to the contours of the human soul, and to our sense of our place on the land. Strohmaier, a long-term firefighter himself, includes accurate and sometimes gut-wrenching descriptions of the firefighter's experience.

Download or read book Guided Reflection written by Christopher Johns and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflection is widely recognised as an invaluable tool in health care, providing fresh insights which enable practitioners to develop their own practice and improve the quality of their care. This book introduces the practitioner to the concept of 'Guided reflection', an innovative research process in which the practitioner is assisted by a mentor (or 'guide') in a process of self-enquiry, development, and learning through reflection, in order to become fully effective. Guided reflection is grounded in individual practice, and can provide deeply meaningful insights into self-development and professional care. The process results in a relexive narrative, which highlights key issues for enhancing health care practice and professional care. This book uses a collection of such narratives from everyday clinical practice in nursing, health visiting and midwifery to demonstrate the theory and practicalities of guided reflection and narrative construction. These narratives portray the values inherent in caring, highlight key issues in clinical practice, reveal the factors that constrain the quest to realise practice, and examine the ways practitioners work towards overcoming these constraints.

Book Reflections

  • Author : Mark Zeitoun
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book Reflections written by Mark Zeitoun and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon twenty-five years of professional work as a water engineer, negotiator, and commentator, Mark Zeitoun provides a unique insider's account of our complex relationship with water. He explains how un-checked assumptions about water mix with political and economic systems to create an insatiable and ruinous thirst for ever more water. He shows how we use water to lethal effect in wars, and demolish drinking-water systems with wanton disregard. He questions why we transform the most majestic of rivers into canals which spark international conflict and challenge our capacity for preventative diplomacy. The answers reflect more about our society than we might care to admit. If we are to restore water's inner grace, Zeitoun argues, we should worry not so much about 'saving' water, but about what we do with it when it's in our hands. Reflections draws upon the author's decades of experience teaching and communicating complex water issues, and replaces widely held myths with new concepts from around the globe. He brings attention to the dissonance between how we see and feel about water and what we do with it, calling upon readers to develop an informed ethos of water that reflects the restorative nature of this essential resource.
