Some states received bountiful benefits, while others languished in obscurity, poorly administered and backward. The Present study concerns itself with examining the status of what today constitutes Orissa, under British administration. Upto 1912, Orissa was administratively part upto 1912, Orissa was administratively part of Bengal, but in that year, it was joined to Bihar, an arrangement which contined till it became a separate province in 1936. The partnership with Bihar which was not backed by popular support had far-reaching repurcussions on the administration and further development of Orissa.Delving deep into archival material, news reports, private papers and other sources, the present authro takes a carefull and critical look at salient aspects of British administrations.

Combined with its unique geography, the trajectory of this region in all spheres manifest an almost constant interplay of local and extra-local forces – be it in literature, art, economic domain, political and religious cultures – and considerable enterprise and ingenuity. Thus, a variety of themes – including travel accounts, Portuguese and Arakanese presence, early Dutch, French, Ostend companies’ forays into the region, artistic production in the Nizamat and later collections of art and missionaries, the English company state’s intrusions in local economy in salt and raw silk production and indigenous reactions and rebellions, consumption practices related to religious activities, circulation and translation of texts, representation of women in vernacular writings, and organization of religious traditions – have been analysed in this volume, with a wide ranging introduction tying up the themes to the broader historiographical issues and contexts. The well-known issues are that of sati, child marriage, ban on widow remarriage and caste discrimination. It is not that attempts were not made to fight social discrimination in pre-colonial India. They were central to Buddhism, to Bhakti and Sufi movements. What marked these 19th century social reform attempts were the modern context and mix of ideas. It was a creative combination of modern ideas of western liberalism and a new look on traditional literature.We hope that students will benefited a lot from reading this book.

Book excerpt: The Sikhs are universally respectful and proud of their Gurus' intimate contact with eastern India representing the territories of Assam, Bengal and Orissa under British rule. It may be debated, however, whether the Gurus' disciples are generally aware of how the Panthic message has been transmitted and perceived over the centuries in this part of the country. Their comparative lack of enthusiasm man be partly due to the bulky nature of these sources as well as the difficulty of having them together in a public library or any single private collection. These materials are in regional languages and carry a distinct local flavour, differing significantly from those of the manjha-malwa-doaba watershed. They suggest not only the spirit of plurality in Indian cultural traditions, but also Sikhism's intimate link with it. Their identification and appreciation is likely to enrich our understanding of Sikhism in the wider context of the Indian unity and diversity. The present study seeks to deal with some of these interesting issues recorded in three eastern Indian languages, namely, Assamese, Bengali and Oriya published over a century between the First Sikh War (1845) and the Partition of India (1947). In the process it outlines the history of the Sikhs and reveals how the message of Sikhism has been perceived in the context of different local issues by numerous eastern Indian authors.
